    So you wrote a novel while working on your PhD and while having a KZread channel? And I am here telling myself that I will continue with writing once I finish my master's thesis while the KZread channel is a wish I plan to work on one day. I mean the second one. I have given up on my first a year and a half ago. OK, I can do it. I can finish my thesis by the end of the summer and defend it before the classes start in the next school year. Then I will be free of guilt for following up with my passions because there will be no "I need to study instead." demon following me around. Just... There is so much resistance. It is making my life much harder than it needs to be.

    I love how simple you made the outline look. Would love to see a video on how that actually looks in practice and how you you go about creating it. I’ve just finished outlining my first book and have really struggled with organising my ideas, so that would be really helpful 😊. Thanks, Adele

    One strategy that I have is trying to just write 500 words, they can be terrible but having them out of my body helps along with writing a "zero draft", it feels like intimidating than a first draft and on one sees it but me.

  • @GlutenbergBible

    There's an office supply store similar to a Staples near where I live that binds it for me! I print it out myself and bring it in, and the binding costs less than $5. Any kind of office supply store or print/copy center, even something like a FedEx, would probably be a good place to look!

    writing by hand and/or going for a long walk with a plan of thinking through plot problems while walking always help me! Those approaches shake me out of my usual routine and help get the ideas flowing. Good luck working through it!

    I think you should give yourself more credit for the NaNoWriMo novel. It's not that you didn't finish it - you finished a first draft of it, and this next stage is the continuation of that creative process that you wouldn't be at had you not done it. You learn a lot by finishing a draft and there's good in realizing what worked and what didn't. In that respect it sounds like a very successful endeavor

    Thanks so much for this comment, I love this perspective! This seems like the kind of thing I would say to someone else, but don't think to say to myself. It's funny how we can be harsher on ourselves in that way. You're completely right, I think writing that draft was a necessary step towards being able to write something that I do feel more satisfied with!

    How do you organize your PhD notes from readings you’ve done? I saw synopses? Was that just in word?

  • @GlutenbergBible
    @GlutenbergBible2 ай бұрын

    I have a few different notes documents I rely on! About four years ago when I settled on a dissertation topic, I started writing up annotations for everything I read that seemed relevant. After I read something, I would write a short summary, then a breakdown of what parts of the text were most interesting to me and any other texts I might be able to connect it to. I put all those annotations into one of three documents for literary, historical, or critical texts - those documents are just in word, yes, but in online word documents so I never lose them! Then about two years ago when I was preparing for my qualifying exam I started another notes document, where I typed up sections of notes based on subtopics. That document has sections for things like just "banquets," and then under that section I write up notes on all the literary, historical, and critical texts I've read relating to banquets. I drew from my annotations a lot when making those notes! I find that I need to do a lot of organizing and annotating like this because I don't have a very good memory haha but this is just what works for me! I do really recommend just an ongoing notes document of some kind, though, it's really nice to have a lot of information all in one place.

    For romance, Ravishing the Heiress by Sherry Thomas! For short, compulsive reads, I would recommend This Is How You Lose the Time War (queer sci-fi romance), O Caledonia (Scotland, teenage outsider, very literary), or The Days of Abandonment (Elena Ferrante, feminist).

    I’d be curious to know about what tech you use and find most useful. I’m either paper or at my table top computer. I love how you are able to move about out in the world. Do you use iPad and stylus pencil for example?

  • @GlutenbergBible
    @GlutenbergBible2 ай бұрын

    Yes, I got an iPad & stylus at the end of my master's degree and it helped SO MUCH with keeping track of and annotating my readings. I use the Notability app and back it up (just in case I lose the iPad) and it has been seriously game-changing. All the other tech I rely on is based on ergonomics, trying to reduce the repetitive strain of spending so much time sitting down typing! I use a LogiTech ergonomic keyboard, an external monitor plugged into my laptop to enlarge my screen & print it to eye level, and a laptop riser to set my papers on top of in front of my monitor screen. I have a particular need for those ergonomic things because I have some repetitive stress injuries that flare up if I'm writing too much - but I cannot recommend highly enough a laptop riser and bluetooth keyboard! my riser cost about $20 and it was such a massive help.
