Classic Literature Chats: Reading the Handwritten First Draft of Frankenstein
I’m so incredibly happy to own a facsimile copy of Mary Shelley’s original manuscript of Frankenstein, and to share some glimpses of this manuscript, and some discussion of why I love this novel so much, with you!
This manuscript was gifted to me by SP Books, but this is not a paid partnership. I was offered the book in exchange for showcasing it on my TikTok, and accepted because I was genuinely so excited to be able to own this text. And now, having already posted on TikTok, I’m under no obligation to be giving praise or publicity to this company; I just am excited to talk about the manuscript, and my thoughts on the novel.
You can find a link to the original 1818 edition of Frankenstein in the “Literary Classic Comfort Reads” list on my Bookshop.org page here:

This was so informative and interesting! Now I know one of my partner’s birthday presents! You are so well-spoken. I am a former English major and would have loved this information into Mary’s life!

thanks for the kind words - I'm sure your partner is going to love this, it's so fascinating to read through all the messy parts of the manuscript!!
This was amazing because I’ve had my eye on this for awhile and now I think I’m going to get it! Mary’s my girl.

I cannot recommend it enough, it's pricey but it's such a beautiful and special item!!
How exciting. I never knew these existed. And “intimate” is perfectly expressed. I have only on occasion felt that whilst reading a book here or there, almost as if I was secretly inserted into someone else’s life. Great video.
I'm not a fan of Frankenstein, nor the gothic in general; but I do respect their place in literature and their effect on what is seen now in contemporary works. But I think what you have is a wonderful edition, and like you said, very personal and intimate. What more could we ask from our books? I'm a bit disjointed and disconnected generally, so it's hard for me to fully connect with things like books (especially people, lol), and therefore I really try to allow a sense of breadth and understanding to pass through me when reading fiction. Of course, everything I read is through an idealist's perspective (in the traditional philosophical sense of the term), and so it shapes my reading quite profoundly. Anyways, I enjoyed the video!
I really enjoy watching you ❤

thanks!! :)
Finally, a proper overview of this book. Eloquently spoken and I'm so jealous you got it for free. I've been so close to pulling the trigger many times, but (and don't laugh)...can you actually read it? Her handwriting looks illegible!
Guess what my husband just ordered for me 🥰
