Writing by the River 🌼 A Dissertation Mini-Vlog

Here’s a midweek mini-vlog, and an invitation for us all to look for the opportunity to go for a long walk and treat our brains to some movement and sunshine ☀️
If you watched my last revision vlog, you know that I’ve recently been working long hours and feeling the toll on my body from sitting hunched over a computer day in and day out. So I took my poor little repetitive-stress-injured, sunshine-deprived body out for a walk that lifted my spirits and snapped me out of a creative block in my Chapter 2 revisions!
I’m so incredibly lucky to live in a beautiful place filled with walking paths (and horses!) and I don’t take nearly enough advantage of that. So here’s hoping that as we get further into spring, and I get deeper into revisions, there are more opportunities to step away from the desk and get out into the fresh air.

First of all, HORSE! 💙💙💙💙 Second, I know the feeling of bad habits. The only way for me to really rest is when the universe forces me to. At first, I don't like the feeling of resting. But after a few hours into it, I'm always more than thankful for it. You're doing a great job! The sceneries are beautiful ^^ don't forget your breaks 💙💙💙💙

The natural is incredibly mentally pleasant, and I appreciate you sharing your PhD journey. I just finished my PhD at the end of last year, and focusing on writing and revising was always a difficult task.

I was so excited when I found it! It makes me hopeful for a day when I can have a yard with a little outdoor workspace like this for myself.

I’d be curious to know about what tech you use and find most useful. I’m either paper or at my table top computer. I love how you are able to move about out in the world. Do you use iPad and stylus pencil for example?

Yes, I got an iPad & stylus at the end of my master's degree and it helped SO MUCH with keeping track of and annotating my readings. I use the Notability app and back it up (just in case I lose the iPad) and it has been seriously game-changing. All the other tech I rely on is based on ergonomics, trying to reduce the repetitive strain of spending so much time sitting down typing! I use a LogiTech ergonomic keyboard, an external monitor plugged into my laptop to enlarge my screen & print it to eye level, and a laptop riser to set my papers on top of in front of my monitor screen. I have a particular need for those ergonomic things because I have some repetitive stress injuries that flare up if I'm writing too much - but I cannot recommend highly enough a laptop riser and bluetooth keyboard! my riser cost about $20 and it was such a massive help.

Thank you - this is really helpful. I’m starting my list - and starting a doctoral program in the fall (with repetitive injuries from tennis).
