Everything I Read in November: It’s Not a Lot! (and that’s okay)

A very realistic retrospective of everything I read in the month of November! Chatting through the few books I read for fun, and also a brief discussion of some of my academic reading from the month.
Maintaining a habit of reading while in grad school has definitely not been easy. Because reading has become work, I have a hard time motivating myself to read for pleasure. The same thing happened when I was a professional baker - I stopped baking at home as much, because I associated it with work, rather than fun. So for me, reading 2 physicaly books and listening to half of an audiobook is a big win!
The ways I read for fun vs. for work are definitely different, but it’s all part of the same practice of engaging with narrative, so I didn’t want to fully separate the pleasure and academic sides of my November reading.
Let me know if you’ve read any of the books I mention in this video - I’m always looking for more opportunities to chat with people about the things I read!

Why yes. I did want a realistic wrap up. Thank you. I only managed to finish one book in November, called Muppets in Moscow by Natasha Lance Rogoff.

Just searched that title, and it sound so interesting! I've been wanting to read more nonfiction - maybe I'll make it a new year's resolution.

I appreciate this so much, in previous years I used to get competitive with strangers online about how many books I read and read over 50. This year I'll be super thrilled if I hit 20, but I took my time and really tried to get more out of them this year. It's totally okay if you read one or none books in a month. It's about never forgetting that reading is there for you if and when you have the time and desire. I was also reading Jane Eyre in November! It's one of my faves as well! Perfect fall/winter read.

I so agree with everything you said here! I used to feel defeated or insecure when I realized I wasn't reading a lot, but I feel like reading fewer books in a relaxed, no-pressure way can be even more satisfying than hitting a higher number of books just for the sake of the numbers. I can still plough through a Kindle Unlimited romance in one day now and then haha but reading more slowly and spending more time with a book feels good 🥰

Love the sound of Praying With Jane Eyre as someone who isn’t religious either but books are pretty sacred to me! I need to try some Emily Henry. Really enjoyed your PhD reading chat!

The podcast is called Hot and Bothered, and for the romance novel writing episode arc they also had writing prompts from Julia Quinn every other episode! It was fantastic

Since you like Jane Eyre their is a retelling that's just come out called Salt & Broom by Shannon Lynn Fisher - A gifted healer unravels the mysteries of a cursed estate-and its enigmatic owner-in a witchy retelling of Jane Eyre.

as a graduate student (currently applying for a PhD on hip hop studies) i absolutely LOVE this! it’s so easy to lose interest on reading when your job is literally to read and write everyday! literally my new year’s resolution is to read and write more for pleasure and not only for work (even though they can be quite pleasant to do sometimes). anyway, so happy to find your channel and this video in this time of need 😅 edit: i also love emily henry and people we meet on vacation is my absolute favorite of hers!

yes exactly, sometimes I get bummed out thinking about how much writing and reading I used to do for fun before it became work! I tried to start doing creative writing again a couple years ago and it was slow going at first but now I do it all the time and it feels so good. Good luck with your new years resolution - also, hip hop studies sounds like such a fascinating topic to get PhD-level deep into research on!

Likely you already know, but Caniba (Paravel and Castaing-Taylor, 2017) and Raw (Ducournau, 2016), alongside Andrade's manifesto come to mind, re: cannibalism.

I've heard of those movies but haven't watched them! I have actually a pretty weak stomach for horror and blood. It feels different for me reading about cannibalism rather than watching anything about it, a little more manageable, but even so I've had to walk away from my reading a couple times in the past if it's too much.

The visceral reaction is so interesting, especially in terms of how certain subject matters, let's say "body genres," are more likely to induce disengagement-'walking away'. Caniba was too much for me, in parts. And that makes me think about the whole arithmetic of racialization, of how for the 'other' can bear to practice what propriety abhors, what a 'you' or 'I' cannot process. Anyways, perhaps "Culture of Terror--Space of Death. Roger Casement's Putumayo Report and the Explanation of Torture" might be of interest. @@GlutenbergBible
