I wanted to share a couple quick tips people taught me early on in my fly fishing career. Looking forward to seeing more of these trout videos. -When you’re nymphing, you should use an indicator until you really get the hang of it. Set your indicator depth around 1.5x the depth of the water, more or less depending on speed of current. General rule of thumb is you should catch a rock 1 out of every 5 or 10 casts. Snagging every cast you’re too deep, never snagging you’re set too shallow because those fish sit on the bottom. Roll cast to easily get unsnagged. -Set the hook if that indicator even slows a bit, it’s not like a popping cork. They don’t need to eat on it, and will spit it almost instantly. -Keep as much of your fly line off the water as possible. If you’re sneaky, you can catch tons of fish without ever letting your fly line touch the water. Fish within no more than 5 yards of you at the start. Follow over that indicator with your rod tip and make sure your indicator is the same speed as the bubbles on the water. Long casts will come with more drag that will drag your flies faster or slower than the current and look unnatural. Any time you have a bow in your line, you will have drag. You will get the hang of mending when you get a bow in your line. -When you’re starting out I would keep fly selection simple. For nymphing, size 16 pheasant tail or size 20 midge are almost always going to match the forage for trout, and chances are that improving your technique will be more important than perfect fly selection early on. -Check out some videos on European nymphing. It is done without an indicator using heavy flies that your keep tension on as you pull them the speed of the current. I would caution away from getting into this too quickly, but it might be right up your alley.
