    I paid plenty of attention. I played the game more than once, which meant that I knew how things were gonna turn out. Admittedly this sours the experience for me in a way it wouldn't for someone playing it the first time through. I mention that I enjoyed the story the first time through (for the most part) but the biggest issue is that nothing really matters once you know how it all ends with everything kind of reverted. It's a spit in the face for a game that I thought was ballsy for actually killing characters off for once.

    I've been playing Disgaea since it came out. I'd say in terms of story D1 is the best but worst in terms of game play. I'd still say that the best Disgaea is D5 despite having Disgaea 7. I liked D4, thought Valvataries rants about the corruptament were great. Got to post game but gave trying to get to land of carnage.

    Watching this reminded me of when my boyfriend told me he wanted to pass a "Extort War Funds" (or whatever it was called in D4 to get money from the senate), where it was only a 1% chance to pass. He would have failed it, but he got it passed by getting Fuka drunk.

    That's some nice thumbnail, hahah! I remember that moment, Slade was totally ice-cold with just about anyone who dared to anger him. One of the things I always liked about The Way are numerous, fleshed-out characters - even the minor ones had very detailed backstories. And the story itself... I had to beat the game *THREE* times in order to connect the dots and understand what's going on. I can't really tell what inspired Luke to write a story about wanderers constantly on the move through the eponymous world, it seems to be one of a kind. And the author didn't shy away from graphic violence that was uncommon for the genre - people die in sometimes nasty, gruesome ways and no blood is spared. And the horror themes are also frequent - the Phantom Slasher, darkened caves where vicious creatures dwell - you name it. Personally I will remember The Way for being my foray into the genre, I wasn't a big fan of computer role-playing games until discovering this game way back in 2007.

    Well, in the instance of this comment I'd start by saying that being round about or indirect is "cringe" and "not kino" and throw in at least three other buzz words so that the target (you) knows they are not "based and red pilled" like me, a true savior of culture.

    When you said that the only plot that was worthwhile was 1 and 2, I completely agree with you. NIS seems to always be treading narrative water since Adell and Laharl. I've been playing a lot of Disgaea 7 lately and I don't remember any of the major plot beats, however I do approve of the post game.

    I'm late to the party so whatever, but the story isn't as bad as you think. You're not suppose to focus on the surface level like you would watching Fooly Cooly, it's the subtext to it. In reality, the story isn't about getting revenge. It's about understanding that you've made mistakes and to learn from them and move on. For Killia, it was really obvious this is what they were going for. A guy trying to suppress the rage he has inside him and atone for his past, but in the end, he learns to accept who he really is . Void Dark has to accept that he was the one responsible for Lieze's death. Red Magnus has to accept that was responsible for his netherworld's destruction. Gideon had to accept that he failed as a father. This was the whole point to why their overload skills would change, once they came to realize this. In reality, the enemy cast was introduced as playable because they figured people would want to play as them but it does mostly make sense storywise.

  • @Mint_Condition
    @Mint_Condition6 ай бұрын

    A story is only as good as it's presentation. There's a manga about a guy who's dad had relations with a dog via force and now he wants revenge, and yet even though it is a complete joke it is better at delivering it's moments with a lot more grace than this. My issue with the story is multiple things all at the same time. It just basically presents things and then does not deliver them, but also does not subvert them well enough for me to consider it good writing or delivery. People want something to connect to. You can't tease the audience forever and expect it to go over well.

    On my 2nd playthrough of D2 as a means to multitask while in college lectures - which means I'm mostly playing mute, so I felt that. For me, it's one of those games, like D1, that you end up getting bored and dropping it, just to pick it up on another occasion and have a blast. I'm loving the Disgaea series tbh, even as a tradCath myself.

    I find myself completely disagreeing with you on this reviews and I love it. That's what this series is about. "It has a little something for everyone". But no, seriously, 4 to this day is my favourite story and either my favourite or second favourite cast of characters. Valvatorez is top 3-ish protagonist in the series for me, I do not care too much for Fenriz and bow girl but I love like Fuka and absolutely love Desco. Emizel is also pretty cool.

  • @nerdzone
    @nerdzone8 ай бұрын

    I am under the impression 2 is your favourite Disgaea. Which is fine. It's my second most "hated" just behind 6. I still like it a lot. My point is that if you ask people about their opinions on the series, you will get genuinely oposite responses. So don't hesitate to review 1 or any other Disgaea game. If someone new to the series pick it up, they will either hate it or love it regardless of which game they picked. To us insiders the games might look vastly different story-wise, in terms of mechanics etc. But to outsiders the games wills look really similar and I doubt someone that is prone to liking the series will ditch it just because they played "the wrong entry".

    7:21 "Whereas most methods of progression are so shrouded in mystery that I have to look up a guide for every single one." So... like every other Disgaea game and similar Nippon Ichi game that has ever existed then. Every one of those games has everything so vague and obtuse you have to look up a guide to have any reasonable idea what you're doing past the main story.

  • @Mint_Condition
    @Mint_Condition9 ай бұрын

    This is simply not true. You can get most forms of progression in other games by just playing however there will typically be a thing or two that eludes you. Usually there's atleast *a* line somewhere in the game that gives you a hint as well. Disgaea 4 has the entire post game as an elusive labyrinth where there's a clown that comes in and beats you with a sock full of rocks if you take too long.

  • @immortalfrieza
    @immortalfrieza9 ай бұрын

    @@Mint_Condition Uh... what? Every Disgaea game since the very first has the vast majority of it's systems incredibly obtuse if they have any explanations at all. Even like the Item World you're only going to have the vaguest idea what you're doing with it without a guide. You're definitely not going to be able to do anything optimally enough to actually get through the post game content without one. The games don't show you anything beyond the bare minimum necessary to take care of the main story without a guide in any Nippon Ichi game. Even if you've played previous games in the series there's always enough additions and alterations each entry to nearly every mechanic that you'll still have to grab a guide to see what the differences are and what effect they have. You're never going to be able to just jump in and do the exact same things you did in the previous entry.

  • @Mint_Condition
    @Mint_Condition9 ай бұрын

    @@immortalfrieza Bro I -just- beat Disgaea 1. Not a single post game mechanic needed explaining. All of it is explained in game or unlocked via natural progression. Disgaea 2 is where you might consider needing a guide, and even then the functions of things like maps are alluded to in game. The problem with Disgaea 4 is that I not only need to consult a guide to even know to DO an action, but that I need to consult a guide to know HOW to do that action. Think of how absurd that is for a moment. No other game in the series has this issue besides maybe D2 and 3, which I haven't played recently enough to know for sure.
