It's sad how this is the mentality for game reviews these days. We are REALLY lucky Mint Condition decided to actually make a review because this is by far the only review of a Robopon game with common sense on it. I wouldn't have expected anyone to go outta the way and defend this game when I got into the series. Luckily in 2020, this game has gathered a small non-toxic fanbase and more people are beginning to remember this game/have nostalgia or discover it for the first time. If he didn't review this that most likely wouldn't have happened. This is probably the most important Robopon video out there as it gives a summary of the games without the Pokémon bias and adds humor into it to get the viewers attention. I hope more people will respect these games and one day, we will receive new games

Thank you! I grew up with the GBA game, so it was very bizarre to see people ragging on the GBC game with only one other review of the sequel up. I constantly see it on non-"gaming news" article lists of good GBA games, but it simultaneously feels forgotten or just ignored.

You give me too much credit, Bawkers. I don't think too many people outside of already existing fans saw my review. It's my most popular review for sure but I'm willing to bet atleast a hundred of those views are from you alone.

I like robopon for the designs. Especially for the black one. Brings me back to my 6th grader self.

Tomoyoshi Miyazaki has been literally kidnapped by Nintendo Ninjas so it wouldn't grow into a Pokémon competitor.

I don't doubt it. They're complacent because they know they have the power of the samurai behind them.

I had to start over on Cross Version not once, but twice due to my battery dying while saving. I eventually learned that with SunZero and Train, you could steamroll the game due to gained experience being a total divided by how many Robopon were on the field. I love these games, but fuck the Windmills. Traversing essentially the same dungeon 6 or 8 times a run is painful.

Hi, one of the 30-odd fans of this game. Fun review you put out here in this corner of the internet. Slightly surprised you didn't mention the dedicated GameFAQs board Cross Version had for the longest time, though. Seeing how enthusiastic those folks were about this obscure title honestly got me interested in playing it, and I'm glad I gave it that first hour or so, because this is genuinely one of my favourite RPGs I've played in a long time. EDIT: 6:04 THERE I AM, GARY, THERE I AM!

Yeah, I didn't think to mention Gamefaqs. I got a lot of information off of it and I always find myself re-reading through the mega thread when I replay. Unfortunately the gamefaqs page doesn't move that often. I made a subtle reference to it, but I didn't really have anything to say about it since I just lurk rather than post anything on the site and posts are pretty rare now. I do appreciate their efforts though, and it's a really small corner where I don't feel like an insane person who imagined the game's existance.

i pretty much agree how that people just ignore how much it improved the games and say things its a clone of pokemon. it ruins any kind of competion or have value in the monster collecting genre because any other games that isnt pokemon is a "clone"

It really sucks because a lot of franchises I like like Medabots and Monster Rancher are more or less dead and we haven't seen games from either in years. Both are considered clones for some reason even though Monster Rancher plays nothing like Pokemon, and Medabots is clearly heavily inspired by Robotrek. Medabots recently got a japanese mobile game though, so we'll see if it doesn't come back from the grave.

yeah it really sucks since it feels like they wrote off the first robopon solely on the basis that it plays similarly to pokemon... its perfectly good in its own right even if it does have flaws... now though it seems to have reversed with temtem... they hated anything even vaguely resembling pokemon without a second thought but then all of a sudden people felt SWSH was going to be bad so they immediately flocked to from what i hear is a buggy overpriced early access MMO once again without a second thought as if theyre getting a new girlfriend to make the old one jealous (then again i mostly just know what a friend told me so take that how you will)... honestly not sure if them turning around and suddenly giving robopon 1 a chance now would make things better or worse in my eyes... also a shame about yo kai watch... its a pretty fun game series

@@Bokune9999 honestly i do like temtem premise but its too early to say its bad(because its early access) but honestly it kinda makes me upset that we had several generations of fans just threw other games( with more promising difference to it) to the abyss before realising pokemon is going downhill. i dont believe all pokemon fans are like this but yeah its utter laughable how they want more better pokemon games yet can't play other so called"pokemon clones". though i am happy people are willing to play other games in the genre and saying "hey this might look like pokemon but this is still a game on it own"

So I used to play this game on the Gamecube called Mystic Heroes. A conversation with a friend made me remember the game today and upon further research I found out that the game had a GBA spinoff called Magical Fengshen (マジカル封神, Majikaru Houshin). What is weird is that the game's format, sprites, soundfont, and sound effects were very reminiscient of the GBA Robopon games. (Watch some game play and skip around, you'll know what I'm talking about) This is strange because Robopon was a Hudson Soft project while this game was a Koei project. Have you heard anything about this connection?

Yes. The connection is that Quintet also worked on the game. The more recent wiki page lists this as Mystic Heroes for some reason (even though it's still listed as on GBA) but if you look at 19:30 before I zoom in, you can see on the list that "Magical Houshin", the JP title of Fengshen is listed there.

Pokémon fans: Game Freak should go out of their comfort zone. Also Pokémon fans: Why play Mon games that aren't trying to replicate Pokémon's gameplay (Digimon, Robopon, Puzzle & Dragons, Yo-kai Watch etc) when I can just play Pokémon Lite (Nexomon, temtem, Coromon)? They truly have no one to blame but themselves.

Me: Digimon Story should be a good fit, it has more story, is on DS, somewhat harde- Fans: But the protagonist isn't wearing a hat so this entire game is terrible (Also hello again)

I love this growing up and always was amazed with how big the cartridge was for it, and that it also had a speaker?! I was like "why does this have a tiny speaker on it" come to find out, the cartridge chimes to let you know you can now access this secret island that you normally can't reach until the game decides you can access it. Fucking dope game mechanic, that Pokémon ORAS used years later! The robots were always so cool and both soundtracks were fantastic. You could definitely tell that this game was scifi/robotic in nature. Different weapons and support items made this more of an JRPG than Pokémon did. Also, you can change the color of your Robopon at anytime! Can Pokémon do that? Nope 🙅‍♂️. Story was bonkers, but I had a blast playing it. Makes me wish they made another one for the Switch

Awesome video. I loved both games growing up. Shame we missed out on Robopon 64.

So nostalgic. I played it soon after it was out almost 2 decades ago... My party consisted of 4 PegSS's. I was so quick the opponents always lost their initial turn.

Well, I think the game is a little underrated due to its in popularity and more in Latin America (I am Spanish-speaking) but despite its mistakes it is a very good game and I am glad to have the physical edition of the ring version. Looking for more information I'll impress how much value it has for others and considering that the game deserves a sequel either spiritual or a fan game.

I used to have a physical copy of Cross version. At the time I had no idea it'd become so rare. I'm not sure where it is now, but I remember my friend stole it from me at some point and I can't recall if I got it back before he moved or not. Maybe with the rom hack tools being made we can get something done. I can see it being done a little more easily after it updates a little.

@@kaledr19 Probably not profitable. The manga is decently popular, and you can see Japanese twitter talk about it pretty consistently, but that doesn't say much about the games.

Really loved your Disgaea reviews. Never heard about this series. Reminds me a bit of Medabot will gladly check it out. Edit: Video ends… I need this game in my life.

Are you telling me that my 61 hour save file from 15+ years ago was only in the first arc!? Wtf!?

I regret buying SwSh. I don't want GameFreak to work on Gen 4 remakes.

@@Mint_Condition GameFreak said they only removed Pokemon for balance. Which is back fired because. Dynamax is more broken then Z-Moves and Megas. Galarian Darmanitan Cinderace (HA) Rillaboom(HA)with Grassy Glide Dracovish with Fishous Rend Zacian in general. Urshifu. Eternatus And certain GMax Pokemon. It's freaking ridiculous. This game isn't remotely balanced. They should've kept Megas and Z-Moves and stayed with it. And they still keep Kanto Pandering too.

@@Nosretep I don't think anyone would care if it was unbalanced if they didn't bring it up. Balance is hard to achieve in an RPG. The more options you add the more is going to be broken in one way or another. Not everything can be good because there's always going to be a better option. Most RPGs just seem to go the route of making the game too easy, which is a shame because I enjoy pushing them to their absolute limits. I don't think Pokemon has ever been balanced though because as a kid I would just brute force everything with the starter.

I have this game, got the Cross version on my GBA and I just love it!

This game is legendary and deserves all the praise it gets.

After playing the game and coming back to this video, I can 100% say this is a very solid reveiw of the game. Extremely funny to. My only disagreement IS THAT HEXBOT SLANDER!!!! Reaper is my widdle baby of death and I love them.

That last ending segment reminds me a article I read a long time ago abt the evolution of games. A new innovative game comes out. Then other games copy it or influenced by it or just steal some mechanics and apply them to other genres. Then a few of those games will also be innovative and the cycle repeats.

Played it years ago, I remember just grabbing a shit ton of boot robopon and winging it

Fun fact, the coolest team you can have is Suncust, SunZero, Diane and Nebulus

I'm actually playing it right now if it's any consolation

I 100% believe that my ability to solve abstract difficult tasks is due to this game.

I actually think something being a clone of something I like is a good thing If I like something, I’m gonna want more of it The actual quality is what matters to me, and while the Robopon games aren’t perfect, I’ll have to check them out Especially this one, it looks really fun

I just don't like the tone is all. It has a bad effect on the younger generation that doesn't know any better. My niece refuses to play anything even bordering on Pokemon-esque if I show her it, as it is "Rip off Pokemon" or something along those lines. This includes series like Yokai Watch and Digimon.
