The Way (RPG Maker) Review: Defeat Ancient Evils With Rock Paper Scissors

I will update it as needed.
There's a lot I couldn't properly get across in this review. In many ways I feel like it was far more difficult to make than any other review thus far. It's simply just too hard to make a game like this appear as good as it really is on the standards I have set for myself. As I kept relistening to the audio a nagging thought that crept up into my head was "Is this going to be entertaining?" and I suppose that's what led me to procrastinate as much, although I take full responsibility for my laziness.
Initially I planned on making this review a more laid back thing, but this is something I've sort of always wanted to do. I've always thought that The Way deserves more recognition, as it's a game that holds a special place in my heart.
Maybe you'll enjoy it, maybe you won't. Just don't go in expecting every mystery to be solved, because initially there was supposed to be more entries that take place in the same universe, so the creator decided to show some restraint rather than force things.
Either way the game is a unique experience, and there's nothing else out there quite like it.

That's some nice thumbnail, hahah! I remember that moment, Slade was totally ice-cold with just about anyone who dared to anger him. One of the things I always liked about The Way are numerous, fleshed-out characters - even the minor ones had very detailed backstories. And the story itself... I had to beat the game *THREE* times in order to connect the dots and understand what's going on. I can't really tell what inspired Luke to write a story about wanderers constantly on the move through the eponymous world, it seems to be one of a kind. And the author didn't shy away from graphic violence that was uncommon for the genre - people die in sometimes nasty, gruesome ways and no blood is spared. And the horror themes are also frequent - the Phantom Slasher, darkened caves where vicious creatures dwell - you name it. Personally I will remember The Way for being my foray into the genre, I wasn't a big fan of computer role-playing games until discovering this game way back in 2007.

Absolutely based review, I've rewatched it many times and its just, utterly fun, to see and its easy to feel your passion for the game. The story, world and character concepts are unique too, and its nice to get some of the story through your narrative, meme-y summarization. Its a comfy, enjoyable review. Plus you're clear and articulate, can't wait for the next review already; imo this was your best review of the ones I've seen thus far (which is all of them except the Rance one, because I don't wanna risk getting spoiled on it since I was like, halfway paused through my own LP of it before going on a bit of a gaming hiatus lol, and the P3 one for similar reasons)

Honestly in many ways I feel as if I did the game a disservice, as I couldn't cover some of the better parts and I think I could have discussed Rhue as a main character better. There's a trend in the community I've noticed where people sort of become "hooked" onto the game, and so it just sort of pops back up into your consciousness and I think part of this has to do with how relatable the game's characters are despite the game being as out there as it is. One of the comments I've gotten on the video mentions that he found the video while looking up things on The Way while drunk, and I guess that's a testament to the kind of staying power it has. It just sticks with you in an inseparable kind of way if you enjoy it. It's like the memory of a former love without the bitter notes attached. Thank you though, I appreciate the kind words.

Thanks for this blast from the past. I kept thinking over the years how awesome it'd be for the series to be remade in a modern engine. I'd buy that in heartbeat.

Die hard fan here, loved the video. That said, I'd disagree with the idea that mysteries were left unsolved; their solutions were always heavily implied. Part of why I loved the game is that the pieces were left out for the player to put together - like who Slade's family was, and what happened to his sisters.

There's a let's play archived on something awful as well as two let's plays from prominent figures from the community. The Way has a pretty dedicated fanbase, but that's probably because it has a tendency to creep back up on you. I've heard good things about the written play through but it also has a lot of opinions and from what I've seen of them I don't agree with them. It provides some insight on the RPG maker community though, and that seems neat.

@@Mint_Condition yeah I've got the game's installed on a different drive, tried reinstalling each chapter after installing RM2K. when I installed RPGM2k I got a prompt to replace files, which I guess was the text font that the patch installed to my program files. so the patch is definitely changing things, I'm gonna try re installing the game files in the same drive later, and if that dont work.... the program files. gonna go watch cute daughter-wife vtuber play disgaea 1, thanks for your help man, even if the fix dont work I'll probably still play the games anyway. runing all this on debloated win 10 if that helps any.

It's great to watch a review of The Way in 2021, but my problem is exactly that, it's a gaming review in 2021 full of memes, memes, and more memes that makes it difficult to get into. That's probably just me being a boring, old bastard though, and I did laugh when LTG popped up with the legendary Boogie rant so i'm a hypocrite. At the end of the day, I loved the video and I love The Way.

Ahh, sorry. That's just my sort of humor. I completely understand how that would make it harder to watch the review for people who played the game back in 2006, but I suppose I have the advantage of being immune to it. Either way I'm happy you enjoyed it despite that.
