In defense of Valvatorez' character. Valvatorez is, deliberately, a character that shouldn't be the protagonist. He's what would happen if Obi Wan, or Gandalf, or someone like that were forced to be the main character. And Valvatorez knows it. He repeatedly states as such. It's absurd that a character like him be the main character, and speaks to the degradation of the Netherworld that characters like Fuka or Emizel SHOULD be the ones taking up the torch of rebellion, but no, Valvatorez has to do it. Valvatorez is a completely flat character, because he has already had his big defining adventure in the past. Twice even. He's a very meta-aware and meta-challenging character, whose only goal is to fix the netherworld to a point where one of the young kids who should be protagonist can take over, and he can go back home to his 9/5. But it keeps dragging him back in, because counting on Fuka is a disaster waiting to happen.

I think Valvatorez is more interesting than a lot of other characters in the group. I didn't really expect character growth out of him, because only one character really grows and ironically I've seen people call him annoying because of that. If anything Valvatorez carries the group, but that is mostly due to his VA if you ask me. I can't say I'd like him as much if it wasn't for his VA absolutely killing it.

@@Mint_Condition I do agree. Troy Baker's performance absolutely sells the idea of Valvatorez being an eccentric loon forced into the position he is, and I'm not sure that his charictarization would have worked as well without it. What makes Valvatorez' character interesting on its own does frankly have little to do with the moment-to-moment character and chemistry and relies more on the meta narrative, and it's the performance that makes him more completely enjoyable. I imagine that without that performance to sell the character in average scenes, he'd actually be pretty similar to Seraphina. Very, very interesting character from a meta-narrative perspective, but pretty awful in terms of actually being an enjoyable one that contributes to the overall feeling of the game, chemistry of the cast, and execution of the plot, unless you're a nerd, or if they strike exactly the right points for you.

No. Valvatorez takes up the torch of rebellion because no one else is willing nor able. For reasons that make no actual sense of course but he's in a Disgaea game. If anything, Valvatorez *Is* Main Character material but is in deep denial of that fact as he is in a lot of things. Valvatorez easily the most unambiguously heroic character in the entire Disgaea series, to the point that in D4 he's the only protagonist who never has a "goes crazy and kills everybody" ending. Valvatorez doesn't need character development because he's already extremely deep to begin with, his development comes from finding out why he is the way he is. In the present Valvatorez helps the other characters get off their butts and take charge of their destiny throughout the story, he's a leader and facilitates the growth of his subordinates. I love Valvatorez because aside from a couple token lines he doesn't go with the whole "I'm evil because I'm a demon but I'm really only saying this because I'm a demon and I should" schmick that the rest of the demons in Disgaea do. He's a hero and all but completely unashamed of it, or perhaps simply oblivious to it, it's hard to tell sometimes. Aside from being instead a VA that was completely awful, whether Troy Baker was the one voicing Valvatorez wouldn't have mattered one iota on whether Valvatorez was a great character. It helps but as long as the VA was decent Valvatorez would've worked just as well regardless. Yes, Valvatorez at the end of the day does carry the plot as a whole, but it's not because of Troy Baker by any stretch, it's due to his character. He definitely was constantly saying interesting and above all inspiring stuff throughout the whole main story.

@@immortalfrieza agreed, the game literally told us that he is THE king of vampire demons at the very beginning of D4, and the corrupted world, the way things work, needs to be fixed, not just putting some individual villains down. Through the entire game he behaved just like a true leader, being a spotless character doesn't mean he can't be protagonist, can't imagine some lousy/emo/naughty kids who care more about their own life choice to take the leadership

Subscribing and looking forward to a review of disgaea 5 and it’s garbage fire of a plot. Edit: also I appreciate that you acknowledge how the English voice actor for Valvatorez absolutely carries the character, because he does.

Thank you for the kind words :) I think Anime games are a lot more subjective. Every time I talk to someone about a series I get really unexpected answers that I feel I wouldn't get from another medium. People either really love or hate Persona characters for example. People hate the characters I like and vice versa. You're either going to like them or not. I think it comes down to the simplistic writing and extended exposure. I don't think you could make a 20 hour cinematic compilation out of something like Halo for instance, but you can for Disgaea, Persona and other story heavy JRPGs. As for a Disgaea 5 review, you're in for a treat, as I'm working on it right now. I can't give a solid ETA but the hard part is over at least.

If Disgaea D2 was easier to get ahold of, I'd recommend that. It's really close in terms of being the best mechanically. It has a better story than 5, and 5 borrows a lot of it's ideas. It's hard for me to say which is better since I haven't played DD2 since 2014 or so. It's locked to the PS3, which makes it inconvenient to play, but it's essentially a modern (for it's time) take on the Disgaea 1-2 formula, which I prefer to the 3-4 formula. It gets a lot of flak for it's release issues, as well as the lack of "post game content", but I loved every second of it. It's hard to simply recommend each title, because bar 3 and 4 they all play pretty differently. Even 1 and 2 have a lot of differences even though 2 is just (in the gameplay department) a supped up version of 1. What did you enjoy most about Disgaea 5?

@@Mint_Condition Yeah, I have an old PS3 somewhere but I'd prefer not to go thru hassle of getting a preowned game :) Things I really enjoyed about D5: 1) while being silly, i was surprised it had actual character development (even some Final Fantasy games had much less of it, especially 12). 2) Grinding thru item worlds to become a one punch man. 3) I enjoyed all the sprite works and skill animations. Things I didn't really like: 1) Some tilesets were waaay to colorful for a demon themed game (Candy worlds, present wrapper tiles, toto bunny with zombies was funny but ugh). 2) Overabundance of mechanics that i didn't quite care about like sub classes, (quite an obscure mechanic tbh. Took me time to realize that you get them for more evilities and stat bonuses for future reincarnations), curry making, summoning netherworlds etc. I really think I might enjoy D2 the most in the series. It looks coherent, like a proper fantasy game. It has less systems and from what I've heard it has the most solid story. Funny that no one recommends D6 :)

@@Darkho1y Disgaea 6 has hard casualized the game and also removed a lot of content that would be present if NIS wasn't going through a financial crisis when they made it. Disgaea 5 is the most serious out of the entire series, and I think 1 and 2 strike a perfect balance between light hearted fun and serious moments. Unfortunately I do not like 5's story though due to how poorly executed it was, and despite having a more serious plot it could not capitalize (in my opinion) on the kind of gravity the serious moments in Disgaea 1 and 2 could have. As for mechanics, I think that DD2 is a good example of really clear, concise mechanics that are both explained, make sense and feel good to use. You can download it digitally if that's up your alley. Disgaea 2 is my personal favorite game in the series, but it does have some flaws and is the game I've noticed that people are most critical of these days (It used to be 3) If you're willing to check it out the ideal way to play it is on PSP because it's portable, but the PC port is really good too and comes with Disgaea 5 DLC, features not found in the PSP versions such as enhanced graphics and all of the DLC from the PSP version, including some that was unavailable outside of Japan. I don't think the DLC matters, but it's still worth mentioning. Outside of that I think it's worth mentioning that Disgaea 2 is a lot more direct. Where as Disgaea 5 has something like 3 grinding methods you have to tackle the post game, and even survive item world, you basically just grind up items and levels the whole game, and level grinding is basically unimportant after you hit 9999 the first few times, and really not needed. There's also a number of features present in the first 2 games that you will not find outside of them. Best of luck, and I hope that I helped even a little :)

I'm kind of at odds with "Disgaea 4". I remember when it first released on PS3, I really hated it. So much so that it basically was the only entry in the series I never even finished the main story of (got midway through chapter 8 before quitting) whereas every other entry I usually went as far as finishing their post games, or most of it anyway. And yet, it was the most popular entry. Even when it got an enhanced re-release on PSVita, I skipped it. And that was knowing full well that it had a host of massive improvements, a treatment that managed to push "3" from an entry I enjoyed to an entry I loved. Even knowing that, I still hated "4" enough to not want to bother. Until earlier this year, with "6" on the near horizon and my obsession over PSN trophies in full force, I reluctantly decided to finally revisit "4" to finish it. The original PS3 version at that. And strangely, I enjoyed it. Granted, I skipped every cutscene and basically speed-ran through the game with all animations turned off. Like the original PS3 version of "3", it lacked polish and some QoL features but I legitimately enjoyed my time with it regardless. Enough so that I went through the 200 hour process to obtain the platinum. The reason I played the original first in such a way was cause I ultimately did decide to play the enhanced re-release of "4" at a latter date. But with all the additions, improvements, and included DLC, I'd play it properly this time...aka, watching all the cutscenes. And well, that "latter date" happens to be now and I'm currently replaying it as I'm typing this. And you know what, I'm having a rough time. I've realized that what stopped me from liking "4" weren't the mechanics or game design, since I enjoyed the rougher PS3 version just fine, it was the abysmal story and character interactions. The attack animations as well I've realized I think mostly suck but whatever, that's a small issue comparatively. I'm resisting the urge to go on a full blown rant over how much I'm hating the story but in short. The characters in a vacuum are quirky and amusing but not when their single-notedness is hamfisted in your face this constantly. Axel, my god, poor Axel's characterization is beyond butchered here. Flonne too, but not as bad. Nearly every lore implication actively hurts the series retroactively. It's astounding. I actually like "6" more in this regard...and that entry is an active mess. I cannot wait to be done with the story so I can just concentrate on doing all the grinding and collecting nonsense. So essentially, more or less your feelings almost exactly. I already have a couple characters at 1000+ and obtained a Puppy Paw Stick. Now I just need to play through the story until I unlock the Bio-Suit class so I can effectively start duping to my heart's content. Can't come soon enough.

yes yes yes. CHARACTER WORLD BLOWS. How do they NOT see that? Also, yes, using mana to increase skill level and skill tile access, just isn't fun. And sadly, don't you feel they'll keep both for 6???

  • @Mint_Condition

    @Mint_Condition

    3 жыл бұрын

I'll have to wait and see. I haven't been catching up too much on Disgaea 6, but they haven't reinvented the wheel just yet so that's always a good sign. Character world has the potential to be good, and I like some of what you can get out of it but the process is just too boring and not gamified enough. Having everything at boring 10 floor intervals also shoots it in the foot. It's just item world only boring, repeatitive and missing a significant amount of features. Skill level isn't ideal, but it's not that bad. In the original D4 you could completely screw yourself out of being able to play a character in the lower levels due to how mp costs scale. You also couldn't delevel, and I do vaguely recall quitting when this happened to me. It wasn't something I noticed until I reincarnated, and all of my progress was on my mage. It's still pretty bad in the enhanced port because armor sucks until you get armor stat% statiscians (This was the last 5% of the game or less for me because of duping). Mastery fixes this entirely because you're constantly getting more out of your armor rather than a system that says you either do or don't have higher stats. TL;DR I'm not sure on character world, but if they kept skill mana systems it wouldn't be that bad due to the systems D5 had making it feel more fluid and acceptable and skill mastery reducing MP cost rather than increasing it.

One of the problems with Disgaea series are the enemies. They are not challenging because they are not smart. For instance, I fought recently Salvatore in Disgaea 3 and she had used her special skills only once, ONCE. Her level was way above my party, and she did not use her special attack on my party, which would be devastating to everyone. That is not hard to program! She could have won, but instead, she used normal attacks. I won by pure AI incompetence.

  • @Mint_Condition

Sadly this is true. AI in Disgaea isn't that smart, but it's probably for the best considering how stupid some of the stats can get. Ultra AI would just make killing them a nightmare. A balance would be nice.

Yes, I will admit it, I like Japanese RPG much more than western ones. Western RPG are so hard to get into, I recently studied the manual of one, because otherwise I would not understand it. Game developers need to make simple rules with great gameplay depth. Chess is a good example of such a game.

I started replaying D4 after whenever it came out of PS3, on steam...And Geez is this game filled with content. But some of the restrictions and conditions are really back breaking... And I swear, I have seen the itemworld so much across all the Disgaea games, I am just sick of it and I haven't even reached D4 endgame grind yet. Still with all the flaws mentioned, even though I disagree a bit on the character (I actually in parts liked Fuka cause she IS this useless and stupid), Valzy is probably still ultimately one of my favorite characters alas I agree that its mostly the dilvery of his lines, they are great. I didn't mind the story so much either, but I am speaking from also knowing 6 and 7 now. Oh boy...Compared to the last two games, its pure gold. I am really sad with the direction they took on the last disgaea. A mix of the good features from 4 & 5 would probably be the perfect disgaea.

Disgaea 3's writing is pretty good. It got a lot of flak for it's gameplay (mostly). I feel some of it is warranted, but not to the extent that the fanbase has given it. Many faults it has are flaws that Disgaea 4 has as well and no one cares cares about that. Evilities in Disgaea 3 and 4 don't really get good until you start going into the character world, which is something I hated doing and is more of an end game thing. It also helps that I played the original PS3 versions of these games, where things worked a lot different. I did not use a guide for anything other than looking up how to get better grinding spots and how to unlock the advertised features, and without one it's even more confusing and difficult for someone to get a good evility set going. I probably should have said "I hated the evility system in d3 and d4 before replaying this game", but that isn't quite as easy to say, and I wasn't thinking too much about it. Evilities are a lot more straight forward and open in 5.

Yeah, honestly I have to agree with you on a lot of Disgaea 4's changes from earlier games. Weapon Mastery was so intuitive and good, why would they remove it for this? At least it comes back in 5 from what I heard. And yeah the story and most of characters really do suck. Valvatorez really is just diet Adell, and Fuka is easily the most annoying character in the three games I've played. And that's impressive because 2 has Tink, Taro, and Hanako. I gotta disagree with you on Fenrich being best boy. I can't stand Fenrich because his entire character can be boiled down to: Asshole to everyone, simp to Valvatorez. Emizel is fine. He doesn't stand out much but at least he has something of a character arc. Artina is just the most boring girl in the franchise. She just doesn't stand out in any way, and the fact that when she was human she was a saint and was reborn as an angel because of it makes her so boring. Desco is great though. I love her thing about being a final boss in training. Special mention to Chapter 6: The A-Virus Pandemic. Which I genuinely believe is the absolute worst main story chapter in any Disgaea game. You are fighting nothing but Axels in this chapter. If this was 2 it would be great because Axel is one of 2's best characters. But oh no, this isn't Disgaea 2 Axel. This is Disgaea 4 Axel. Who FUCKING SUCKS. He's so annoying, so dumb, so aggravating, and you gotta deal with your party members slowly turning into him over the course of the chapter. And this chapter has the audacity, the NERVE, to end it on an asspull that angel blood can cure any illness, which was never even HINTED AT in any other game or this one beforehand (maybe in 3 which I can't play but I highly doubt it), but Artina didn't do it earlier because of the bullshit "angels can't harm themselves by law" rule. Garbage writing for a garbe chapter. ALSO, are we going to ignore that twist near the end about fear energy? It's so mean-spirited because it's the game condemning humanity to be helplessly attacked and taken advantage of by demons or else the demons and angels we play as will literally die off. And it's especially baffling when demons constantly do terrible shit to each other all the time and can get away with it. But when humans do things even slightly bad like "having the ambition of taking over the world as a young child" (Hello Fuka), aka literal thought crimes, they become prinnies when they die and have to slave away with awful working conditions for who knows how long until they literally pay off their sins. And holy FUCK the Land of Carnage is a mindfuck to unlock. In 2 I already had most of the maps from naturally playing the game without even knowing the Land of Carnage even existed before looking it up. Here though? I had to look up so many guides to figure out what to do to unlock it. It also doesn't help that 4 has the weakest soundtrack of the games I've played. It has some really good ones like Crimson Cross and the final boss theme, but when compared to 1 and especially 2 (2 has the best soundtrack by a long shot) nothing really stands out. Something else personally I dislike is how Guns got nerfed into the ground in this game. In 2 Rozalin was one of my best units due to guns gaving good long range skills and only scaling off of the hit stat. In 4 though they're based on hit AND speed which just gimps them and makes minmaxing damage for guns so much harder because you now have two stats to balance out. Which is just one more thing going against Artina since she's proficient in Guns and bows. At least monsters are actually useful in this one. Between Magichanging being much better and monster fusion, monsters are much more useful in 4 compared to 1 and 2. And Desco is one of the best units in the game due to her great stats, aptidudes, evilities, huge AOE skills, having flight, and the benefits of being a monster. I still liked 4, but with all of its changes that I just didn't like and the weakest story and characters of the three I played, I just don't like it as much as 2. I still think it's better than 1 due to 1 being the most bare bones in the franchise in terms of gameplay since it's the first one, but lemme tell ya it ain't the story or music that has it above 1.

Adell is diet valvatorez, both are bland but at least valvy has something more to him than repeating the same three phrases over and over in response to every situation. The land of carnage is easy to unlock in disgaea 2 but tedious as fuck to actually complete, getting all the pirates to spawn is fucking hell and I’ll take 4’s ambiguous but less atrocious approach any day of the week. Also don’t know how anyone could consider disgaea 2’s soundtrack to be better than 4’s; it has sinful rose and white tiger but everything else is very meh, while 4 has the ones you’ve already mentioned, wings that can’t fly, Arcadian vampire, the wandering, you go girl, and a bunch of other bangers.

Somehow I haven't responded to this post yet. I'm pretty sure I've written responses to it, and they just haven't gone through or something. Either way that's a big whoops. Weapon Mastery is both in Disgaea D2 and 5, but in 5 it's not as powerful. It's used to supplement aptitudes, which are handled significantly better in 5, but not that great. This is more of a divisive topic though because some people prefer 4's character world. It's a board game in 5 and serves as a nice diversion from the gameplay loop when done in small amounts, but unlike other mandatory methods of training, it never gets any faster. It's really unfortunate because weapon mastery caps too fast if anything and aptitude is essentially the other half of equipment stats. It's really satisfying for early game though so I can't fault them too much there. I think they were trying to stop the player from becoming too strong too quickly, but I wish Weapon mastery could be "expanded" beyond 100 after you enter the post game. The brief nature of the grind makes certain things like the ability to increase weapon proficiency rank pointless since I can just spend 5-10 minutes to cap it out at 100. i think I wound up liking Fenrich because he often drives a lot of the humor that I enjoyed, and I tend to like smug characters. He came across as really smug in some of the scenes, and I appreciated that as I didn't like the story as a whole and was holding myself back from skipping the story out of obligation for the review, so it was a nice reprieve from some of the other characters. I absolutely agree about the story details. They feel made up on the spot for this one particular game. They do not appear in any other games, and that's really weird considering Disgaea shares a universe with the rest of the NIS games. It puts it in a weird spot because I know they're pulling it out of their ass. I agree on the soundtrack, but I did like a few tracks. Disgaea 4 definitely benefits from having other game's tracks, but I wouldn't say that means the soundtrack is good since they don't play through the campaign. In particular though I hate the X-Dimension map song. That shit gets so ingrained into your soul by the end of the slog, and I think it contributed to me getting sick. It's still stuck in my head even though I can't really call it music. I do not agree with guns being good in Disgaea 2 however, as the randomized elemental affinity makes it a nightmare for elemental skills to do damage, and at most guns have a 5 tile attack, which will only hit 4 enemies out of the 8 in the best grinding map. It makes it slower and more dangerous. It is much easier to make a really powerful sword and train your units to 20 sword mastery and equip that to train them. They're fine otherwise, but it was a real struggle to level my thief up until I came up with the idea. I do think that uniques are fine though as they can supplement this with their own skills. I just thing that it's not plausible to use guns without supplementing it with something else. A lot of the mechanics from 4 are pretty good, and I was a bit sad to find some of them aren't in 5 and D2, but I guess it does add a reason or two to replay the game somewhere down the line. There are some good mechanics, but also some poor implementation. I recommend checking out 5, but I understand it has a reputation for having the worst story so I won't fault you if that stops you. I mis-spoke in saying it's worse than Disgaea 4, but that's because it leaves a bad taste in the mouth with it's ending.

@@Mint_Condition Funny that you recommended me to play 5, because I just finished its main campaign last night. The story is meh, with some really badly written moments. At its basis it's a revenge plot to stop a tyrant from taking over the universe. I don't have a problem with that, my main problem is most of the main cast's character development and the power-ups tied to it. Like, you need a pure heart to master the Ultimate Demon Technique, but Zeroken and Killia are able to somehow pull it off in mere minutes by just trying really hard when they both acknowledge that they're very flawed individuals? And how the ACTUAL FUCK did Usalia turn Majorita's curse into a power-up? This isn't some latent ability she always had but couldn't control, this is a curse put on her by an outside source. Or how Seraphina's development is about....overcoming a fear of becoming poor? That's so random for her characterization for most of the game since it's almost never brought up. At least Red Magnus and Christo's development is decent. They feel the most natural for their characterization and best written by virtue of everyone else's power-ups being so bad.

@@armedweiss5531 A reoccurring theme for Disgaea is the flaws of demons. You can see it in every Disgaea game bar maybe(?) 4. The whole time it was always about accepting their flaws and living with it. Being "whole". It's like Persona in that way. It didn't bother me, but I did feel that Seraphina's development was tacked on. It feels like they either moved it, or added it on to begin with since you would figured the MC would either develop first or last, but he develops second to last out of the group. Some unrelated gameplay advice, but if you're on PS4 or Switch look up a translation list for evilities. 20% of them are wrong. If you're on PC a majority of "ATK" evilities are unrelated to the attack stat, and instead an attack modifier used to boost the damage formula. (Unrelated to damage %) They're major damage boosters and missing out on them will make the game harder than it has to be. From there I advise making curry. It doesn't matter what, but add 100 thimbles in the "other" slot. It's a guaranteed 100% crit rate. The longer you let a curry sit without using it the more it "ages", meaning playing 100 maps without eating it will mean it lasts 100 maps when you do eat it. These are important for post game so don't sleep on it. Also the Professional innocent is mistranslated. It is Crit Damage %. If this is too much, it's just all stuff I wish someone had told me. Stuff I overlooked, didn't fully understand and mistranslations. There's a lot of depth to Disgaea 5 but a ton of it is slept on, which is why it gets memed on for having the least amount of end game content even though it has 4 tough as nails end game bosses, one of which most people won't ever see because you have to beat Carnage Baal. Best of luck.

@@Mint_Condition I don't have a problem with that type of story. My problem is the actual mechanics of how they got the power-ups that go with their character development. Red Magnus and Christo make sense since their self-hate and doubts are limiting them from their full potential, but I already went over my problems with everyone else. Usalia's power up being the worst for making absolutely zero sense. I actually really like the Disgaea 5 cast a lot, definitely a much better package than 4's overall. It feels like everyone is important, instead of half the lineup adding nothing meaningful to the story and especially cutscenes. *cough* FUKA *cough* Due to the game's revenge mode, I think that 5 has the hardest main campaign of all the Disgaea games. Due to this, I often found that about half my sent characters got KOd as a result of most if not all the enemies going in Revenge Mode. But this doesn't feel unfair, because you have the edge of having Overload Skills while common enemies don't. And the boss fights are easily the highlight of the main campaign. Due to their stats and Overload skills, Bloodis/Goldion and Void Dark are in my opinion best boss fights in any Disgaea main campaign. It deadass took me an hour to finish the fight against Void due to me refusing to get overleveled, and it felt so good to finally take him down. Although I really have to ask who thought Majorita's Overload Skill was okay. That thing is so unfair, and makes her fights the worst in the game to me. And thanks for the advice, I'll keep that in mind.

I would say that the other characters are tolerable but Fuka is too present in every scene for me to give it a pass.
