Correction that is CampHill prison not York County Prison
@DavidGlover-w4n if you are referring to the picture in this video, that is the second York County Prison. It was raised in 1906 and replaced with the old rectangular building that is there now.
You produce incredible content I love that we have a local historian
@@shatterpointgames thank you! I appreciate the support.
That headstone is cool
👍👍
Very hard movie to watch
I went to Harrisburg Cemetery this weekend based on your channel. Fascinating! I saw a Pancake stone and remarked that was a last name I have never heard before. I believe it was a stone for Edwin Pancake
@@ennasusthomas4275 pretty cool! That is a fascinating cemetery.
The shut down of two textile plants (1990s, one in garment & shoes i think) hurt and finished off much of that whole area. Biz and homes slowly started being abandoned from Shade Gap to north of Spring Run. Used to pass through Neelyton on Rt 641 at least 2x each week (b4 Google Maps, that wa my secret shortcut to get to 522, and on to State College). Still occasionally do (at least once per month). Remember it well as it was at the bottom of the 2nd steep ridge on 641, & winter made it slow going. Beautiful area.
It is a beautiful area of the state.
Great video!! Thank you!!
@@921shamrock thank you!
I’m guessing you’re from the York County area? I am as well, although not born here, kinda raised here. Anyway I’m an historian/living historian/reenactor. I know the history here a decent amount, all be it mostly 19th century. My mother’s side of the family has deep ties to the founding of many parts of York and Lancaster counties. Heck her side is related to the Blymire’s, if you’re from the area you know who that is. Would like to connect with you if possible. Be glad to help you with the history of the area, even find cool stuff. Anyway I could help I would love to, it’s the historian in me. Also, is your name Barry? That’s my real name too.
Hello! Yes definitely reach out to me. I have been trying to find a few living historians and re-enactors for a few stories in the area. If you get a chance email me or connect with me on Facebook. [email protected]
Fascinating story. My grandfather (who is still with us) was a tail gunner in a B-24J in the Pacific. During training, he was a waist gunner in a B-24D when #3 engine caught fire over the Florida Everglades. He got his chute on and prepared to jump. The pilot was able to rev the engine so high that the wind from the propellor blew the fire out, then he shut it down immediately. He said that when they landed, oil was pouring out of the engine.
Wow!!
I remember this taking place. Such a tragedy for this couple!
They lied alot about the confederates.
I'm from Windsor,PA. Just found this channel and it's so awesome to hear the history of places I've walked or skated. Keep up the good work.
Thank you Timothy!
Maybe a walking stick along with your selfie stick
Lol good idea.
Barlow: it’s over Gordon I have the high ground. Gordon: You underestimate my power!
I have stood exactly where this was filmed, and toured the entire facility, including the tunnels below. Such a fascinating place. I've heard it is now closed to the public completely, due to vandalism.
I heard it was closed too unfortunately. I'm surprised this area hasn't been marked up.
As a child we played on a trail near our home, in rural Massachusetts. It was the remains of a Boston to Hartford post road.
Pretty cool!
My first wife's family was from the coal mining region around Scranton, Pa. She passed away in 2007. I grew up in southeastern Pa. My father-in-law told me they left the area because of lack of jobs. He said, it was either be a coal miner or a truck driver. Her whole family were beautiful, down to earth, and hardworking people. Once accepted into their clan, all would give you the shirt off their backs to help you. Just an amazing bunch of people, with so many interesting stories of struggles and success. I feel so honored, to have become a part of that family of REAL people, during my current journey of life. They taught me the true meaning of love and respect. We certainly need a major wave of that philosophy, in the crazy world today.
That is the truth. Even walking through this old town, it was refreshing to see how friendly and down to earth everyone was.
I’ve lived in the West Virgina hills my entire life and even my granny said close the curtains at night and don’t look out the windows. Granny knew best.
😂😂😂😂 this reminds me of the drunken fun in Columbia
😂😂
@@runningintohistory im gonna have to stop watching ur videos, i just came across a story that hit to close to home. I dated lanes only survivor, long before her run in with him
@shanestamball1886 damn. That's crazy.
@@runningintohistory i actually fooled around with another girl in my teenage years, she to was murdered by a real Psychopath. The police believed he killed another girl in York in the early 80s and hid her body under a bridge in York. But could never prove it. I didn't know about PB until a few years after. I ran into her at a social event.
My kids live in the Area. Imhave an ebike and am looking forward to doing some tri0 inthe area this summer
Sounds like fun. I have been thinking about an Ebike.
@runningintohistory there are so many out there, its tough to choice. At my age I'm not trying to fix them when problems accur so I went with aventon. They have hundreds of dealers and repair shops. I'm sure good repair shops can do it but just felt more comfortable with them. I'm moving down to that area eventually for the kids and there are many more trails in that area. Looking forward to your videos
I feel like a idiot, from the area and dont know about any of this stuff
Don't feel bad. I only focus on obscure history that not many people are aware of.
@@runningintohistory im currently watching ur wizard ranch story. Kinda makes me sad, i had many good times there. I didn't know it wasn't the boy scouts anymore.
Pretty cool you went there. I just found out that the Boyscouts still have permission to use it every 4 years so the safari is still happening for now at least.
@@runningintohistory im 47, we were there probably 5 times, and camp Tukahoe. Tukahoe is much larger by land and had more programs. Yet wizard ranch was always packed. That large field with the valley would be full lol.
@@runningintohistory since you lile obscured. HIGHLAND PARK. West Manchester twp.
You seem to be nearly a expert at research in the south central PA area. A little further north. You should maybe look into the civil war gold story that was hidden in Dents Run, and the father son duo (Finders Keepers) who say they found its location and the FBI stealing it. Supposedly a Judge in Harrisburg has sealed all the records of the search warrant and the outcome.
That story has fascinated me for years. I actually had it on the list for a while.
@@runningintohistory that had made me look for accounts surrounding gold being moved as payment to soldiers. I have a good friend whos cabin is right down that same road the FBI was set up on, and was up there when they were digging. Without knowing what they were looking for at the time the locals thought it was a body. Afterwards the woman who lives on the hill above the dig site claimed they came back and were digging at 10 30pm. And 3 FBI SUVs backed into the site 1 at a time and left. I was told she was ex-law enforcement so why would she lie, especially before anyone made it public they were chasing a gold legend? I think them guys were right, and the FBI found it and stole it. Had some fellas come to me with that story in 2015, i would have given the 5K remediation fee to the state, to allow excavation. It was my understanding that is why they went to the FBI, because they didn't have the money's to escrow for the dig permit.
This was super cool! So happy it came up on recommended!
Thank you!
I love history
Was blood poisoning just sepsis?
Good question. I'm not sure what was considered blood poisoning back then but an article indicates that a rusty nail caused it so it probably was sepsis or tetanus.
I remember when the soldiers original tomb stone was destroyed a few years ago
Oh wow didn't know about that.
@@runningintohistory it was in the news for a few months
My mother (RIP), six years younger than Jimmy, remembered seeing teenaged Jimmy working in his dad’s hardware store when she would go there with my grandfather in his horse drawn farm wagon (early 1920s) and I remember being in that store with my dad after Jimmy was already in Hollywood (1950s). Cool video.
Pretty cool. I wish I could have seen the store.
Any story told by Gordon needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. The story was not recorded at the time in any local papers but years later in North Dakota at a hotel.
Definitely.
One newspaper article I read regarding the Johnson Gang is that they would steal a farmer's tractor then sell it back to him. The farmer was too scared to tell the police because he knew what would happen to him.
I grew up on part of the late Gen. Gordon’s farm in DeKalb county, GA.
Oh wow! The more I study that guy, the more I respect him. I will be releasing more videos about him so stay tuned.
@@runningintohistoryGood looking lady if that's her actual pic, sir??💕
@@runningintohistoryThat's an anecdote I've not heard previously concerning Gen Gordon. Very interesting, sir👍
I couldn't find an actual picture of her so I had AI create one based on what I imagined her to look like lol.
@@runningintohistory I commend you for your innovation, sir😁👍
I'm sure they will take it all down I was born in PA and live here and they are building up every area they can to accommodate the surge of new Yorkers who by the way are decimating pa. I'm familiar with the area I'll have to drive through. Thanks for the video I loved it
I miss riding 4 wheeler at Centralia been a couple years
I found a cannonball in the creek below the 462 bridge 2 years ago I still have it I live in Marietta I'm always in york and columbia looking stuff since that day..
Wow that's pretty cool!
I remember reading about the Johnston family in Time Magazine in the 70s.
Awesome sledgehammered that like button
Thank you!
Dude. I had a similar experience my cheap drone hit the rapids and no way was i going into the water. As far as the underwater video please re-edit. Drop the mundane music and add sound effects, bubbling water and crying
Wow I didn’t realize they moved all the way into Wrightsville
Why do I sense that Mary's actual photo was a tad different than the one shown?.....
Lol. Yeah unfortunately I could not find an actual photo so I had AI create one based on what I pictured in my head 🤣
Mary was a smoke show!
That's an incredibly fascinating piece of history I wasn't aware of before now😳 Thanks to whomever posted it on KZread👍
This sequence of events in June and July of 1863 was always fascinating to me.
@@runningintohistory I have to agree with you there, sir👍💯 From the time between Chancellorsville to Gettysburg was The Confederacy's high point in a martial manner of speaking
@@runningintohistory I read where Gen. Pettigrew's brigade had actually passed thru Gettysburg on June 26th before falling back bc of Union cavalry's presence there. He was instructed not to engage the enemy
@@michaelvaughn8864 yeah they were already there before falling back to Gettysburg again. I am posting a series of videos about this time frame starting tonight so stay tuned.

A LIDAR survey may reveal more of the original turnpike.
I did do a LIDAR overlay. Unfortunately it didn't show much that I could tell. But we did locate what appears to be a turnpike marker at the one end of the woods. Definitely more to come on this.
I just stumbled across this channel, as a lifelong York county (Dover) resident, I find these videos fascinating!
Thanks for watching. So much history in York County!
Can you imagine ....way back then...A monster came out of the water....Wow, thanks for the video...keep them coming!!
