The PA factory that killed 78 people in 1911: Bayless Pulp and Paper Corporation, Austin PA

Ойын-сауық

My friend Jon and I came across the abandoned ruins of this plant while staying at another friend's cabin, to do astro/night photography in the area.
In 1911, the Bayless Pulp and Paper plant, in the mountains of Austin Pennsylvania, Potter County, would cause the death of 78 citizens of that town when the Austin Dam feeding the plant failed.
This would be the second worse dam failure in Pennsylvania history. The Johnstown Flood/South Fork Dam disaster, 22 years earlier, being the worse. (2,200 deaths).

I have been looking forward to filming and exploring this place myself this year. How does your channel not have 100K subscribers!? Outstanding content, its like watching a documentary film, truly great work, thanks for everything you do!

Thanks a lot Walter! You definitely should check it out. A lot of hiking up there too. Hammersley Wild area is one of my favorite locations in the state.

Thanks Barry! I’ve wondered about the backstory since I saw the destroyed dam last summer!

Excellent video. The Austin Dam disaster is one of the stories from that area that has fascinated me for 25-30 years since I first stumbled on the remains of the dam. A few years after that we were in Wellsboro for a weekend and they were premiering a documentary done by Mansfield University at the theatre in Wellsboro. If you can find a copy of it, it is a great history of the dam, and the failure. It is narrated by Willie Nelson, the country singer, but that adds the name connection to the dam story. As always, great job telling the story.

Thanks a lot Bud. I actually came across that Willie Nelson version while researching this one. I book marked it to come back to it. I didn't do much on the dam. I figured I I would focus on the factory for this one and then maybe hit the dam. My friends cabin is in Austin so I'm up there often. I love that area. We were looking at property up there for a while.

@runningintohistory I'm planning a two or three day shooting trip up that way in May or June. The dam is going to be my first stop on the way up, then several Wellsboro area locations. It is a great area, and always something to explore. My ex and I were looking at a camp south of Wellsboro, but it needed a bit more work than we felt comfortable taking on. And there was some question about the viability of the septic system. Did you find the Mansfield doc video on line? If you did, would you mind sharing the link? I haven't been able to track it down.

@@raptorPA I think I just saw it described somewhere. I think back in the 60s if I remember. It might have been on the Potter County Historical Society page.

@runningintohistory the documentary was probably around 1998-2001 somewhere. At one point it was for sale at the Gift Shop in Austin. I was planning to grab a copy but was hoping it was somewhere on line to watch before I head up. Hopefully tho I still have a working DVD player around here somewhere lol.

I really like the adding of other historical events down along the bottom left. This was a fantastic site to visit and explore (much better during the hotter months imho).

We got a chance to check this place out about 5 years ago, prior to my KZread channel. We mostly focused on the dam itself, was kinda scared to go into the mill. Plus it was summertime and I was worried about snakes, as this area is prone to rattlers. Very interesting to hear your thoughts, and facts about the mill, especially post 1911. A lot of that stuff I didn’t know. As a Johnstown native, this place is especially interesting, the stories are so similar. It’s a shame when humans make the same mistakes over and over resulting in lives lost.

Thanks for checking it out. I don't think I would want to go in there during the summer either. I was back up there last summer and it was really overgrown. It is definitely an interesting place. I love that entire area of the state.
