Running From Stonewall Jackson: The Shenandoah Valley Campaign 1862

Ойын-сауық

On May 10th of 1862, Stonewall Jackson began to pursue Union forces under General Milroy and General Schenk, north to Franklin West Virginia (Virginia at the time), after his victory at the Battle of McDowell.
A lot of drama would unfold in this valley over the three days that the Union Army would run from Jackson. Citizens and Union soldiers would come under attack from Confederate Guerillas, operating out of the area caves.
I stay the week on an old farm just south of Jackson's Headquarters as I locate key locations related to this pursuit and I explore the way of life of current residents, in an area that has changed little since armies past through these mountains.

Me too. I have been a reenactor for 35 years. Artillery, both CS and US impressions. My g-grandfather was 13 when he rode with the 27th VA. Partisan Rangers at Chickamauga. His older brothers were with the 37th with Jackson. One of them died in the Valley Campaign. Family history has it that after 2nd Manassass, the remaining brothers in the 37th, went home, stole a couple of horses, and promptly joined the 22nd VA. Cavalry, with whom they served for the rest of the war. Amazing how those guys managed.

Oh wow. Pretty cool your a reenactor. My 3x Great-Uncle was with the 4th Regiment PA Volunteers in Antietam. My 3x Great-Grandfather was with an "Emergency," unit stationed at Fort Washington to protect Harrisburg, shortly before the battle of Gettysburg. I speculate often that if Jackson was alive instead of Ewell when the Confederates approached Harrisburg, my 3x Great-Grandfather might not have survived the attack and therefore I would not be alive lol.

    Jackson was a military genius.

If Jackson were fighting in the Green Mountains or the White Mountains in New England, having NO knowledge of the territory with three diffe rent commands -a third the size of his- where he is not making all the decisions, how would he have done then? Sorry he had every single advantage. How much “genius” does that take? I live in Staunton, his headquarters. And I went to c Schooled in Vermont. I know both sets of mountains.

I still think he would have done well in the white mountains. He relied on experts. Even in the Shenandoah Valley, it was his map maker from Pennsylvania that gave him the edge there.
