Are you still sailing this boat Richard ?

Hi George, The boat is ashore in a Brightlingsea boatyard, and sadly I have not been able to get her in the water yet this summer as I have a back problem that requires surgery. I was hoping to take her up the Thames and into the Lee and Stort navigation for a little summer cruise; but those plans are 'on hold'... I'd be happy to hear from you by email if you are interested; richardhgardner (at) gmail (dot) com

I intend to build an Aluminium version of this design and just wondered how it handled in offshore conditions.
@richardgardner19906 жыл бұрын
George, I would say this is very suitable design to build in Alu. The hard chines would give good strength, and allow straightforward sheet construction once a suitable framework is achieved. As for weight, I would imagine that it should be possible to get a similar strength-to-weight ratio to my boat in ply on softwood framing - maybe even better as you could probably get away with a more minimal frame structure using aluminium. As for offshore handling, I am very pleased with the way Maru Maru goes in a seaway: being wide enough in the beam, she doesn't roll much at all, and the flattish bottom doesn't slam in head seas due to the fine and deep entry at the bow. Even with centre-board up, stability is very good; but with it down, she sits up well under sail or motor, with excellent directional stability/tracking, due also to the long stub-keels, which protect the centre-board case, and allow the boat to take the bottom securely upright. You can probably see from the video how lively the hull is under power. she responds and lifts instantly to each wave, and feels very responsive to the helm. Things are obviously more 'damped' under sail, but I have had no anxious moments at all in rougher weather - although I am basically a fair-weather sailor, and I haven't experienced really big seas. Perhaps the most testing conditions I have sailed in was one rather hairy entrance to Orford Haven, when there was a strong onshore wind blowing that had kicked up short steep breaking waves over the apprach sandbanks, and the bar was not a comfortable place to be at all. But Maru Maru just plugged on through without any drama. I would be very interested to hear of progress on your project, so please keep me informed how you get on. Have you been in touch with Paul Fisher to hear his ideas on using Alu for the build of his design...? Best wishes, Richard

Have written to Paul re the use of Aluminium and he seems to think that its a fairly easy transition from wood. See your e-mails.
