The Band Guide

The Band Guide

Do you want to make professional, radio ready music?

The goal of The Band Guide is to bring professional level audio training to GarageBand, Logic, and beyond. I have worked in recording studios around the US as both an engineer and a musician for the last 15+ years. I have used some of the highest end gear in the world and some of the most budget gear and what I have learned is...

it's not WHAT you use, it's HOW you use it.

ANY DAW (yes, even GarageBand) has everything you need to make great sounding music, I am here to help you with the how.

Your band guy,
Colin

    Hi Colin, wow is this helpful! Especially since i am not too familiar with all the technical ins- and outs of the plug-ins, i now understand more of what they actually do... And it sounds absolutely so much better now! I also tried the mastering tool in the stereo out mix, and, as you mentioned, there is a lot of 'pumping' going on there and worst of all, the silent passages become much louder (probably because the differences between soft and loud will sound better in a car or on a telephone, but i want to keep my choice of the extreme differences that i go for in my mixes... the mastering tool ruins that immediately ;-) So, i will definitely go along the path you have set out in this video! Thanks so much! Stef

    Besides the harmonic content and fulness that chromaglow gives, folks look at his stereo output. No nasty peaks it tames the peaks in the mix. Natural compression. Loud, full mix. Great plugin.

    I had used an automated drummer and when I changed the piano slightly it completely changed the drums?? I don’t know why because I had only redone the piano chords. They were the same chords from before just a little cleaner. It changed the drums COMPLETELY and I don’t know how to get them back. I’m pretty new to GarageBand too so can someone please help me 🙏

    I don't know if this is outdated, but the built in compressor does have a reduction meter, but I've only been able to access it 2 ways: (1) pick a patch in the library (left hand side of GB) that happens to have the reduction meter (for example, some of the vocal patches), or (2) create a new audio track and it will default to having compression with the reduction meter in the smart control bar. Strangely, if you remove the plugin, you can't just re-add it to get the reduction meter back. You can only get it on the track creation (or the selection of a patch that displays it). One more gotcha: the reduction meter is not numbered, but at least you get visual feedback of some sort.

    Thank you for the informative video. I am a long time music editor in Pro Tools and going all the way back to Synclavier. I have to be honest and say I'm not yet a big fan of logic? I am trying to learn it as some clients of mine are asking me to. The way you are demonstrating editing you are moving so quickly in terms of how the tools are interacting that it's hard to track what you're doing? Also, it looks to me like you are manually nudging audio files to align to the phase correlation of the other File? Why would you not use a command where you're nudging by even increments like in ProTools? It seems unnecessary or inaccurate to be nudging by eye and moving things by hand? Some of the difficulties that I have with logic are that really basic editing things like moving object to a specific moment in Time seems to be really complicated? Maybe I'm missing some thing and I need more time with the DAW but so far I'm not seeing a lot of ease of workflow with this particular tool. I do appreciate that you're trying to show how editing can work. Thanks for taking the time to make this. PS call Suu it's really interesting to watch you everything with audio files but I'm curious if this kind of editing style also works when it's purely midi?

    Hello there! Thank you very much for such a cool video series. I just love it :3 I'm a completely beginner in the music production, but I really looking into the house and techno. Would someone will be able to recommend any drummer and/or drummer kit which is good to start using for such music genres?

    I have a question about preparing my tracks BEFORE STEP 1. I'm trying to find a workflow that works but it''s so difficult to get out of the creative-writing/recording mode. Many of my tracks are still MIDI tracks. Do you recommend printing/bouncing these to audio before beginning the 6-Step mix process?

  • @davefhill
    @davefhill2 күн бұрын

    I see from the mixing videos that the drums (only) are still in Midi Mode, so I suppose there's not a hard answer to the question of tracks being bounced, other than the fact that many tracks with many plugins use much more CPU. I appreciate and am really impressed with the knowledge and teaching ability of The Band Guy, and I'm hopeful that by following the mixing and mastering videos they will steer me in the right direction to finally establishing a production flow that really works in helping me finish songs.

    Another great video. Personally I love / hate what they've done to Drummer. I love the new manual patterns and the ability to pick side stick in a region (though it's too loud compared to center hits), but I hate what I'm hoping is a temporary or personal glitch: splitting regions that have fills will occasionally throw the drum timing off (like way off). The timing gets thrown off both on the fill before the split and the drums that begin right after the split. I have a ticket opened with Apple (not holding my breath), but hoping a future update fixes it. Have you (or anyone else) experienced the same issue creating fills in Logic 11?

    @thebandguide Great video! I am running into one issue. I pitch corrected vocals with FlexPitch but when I bounce the files in place or even try to export them, the notes change. Some of the notes are slightly off (from pitch perfect to -17) but others change notes all together (E to D#). The exported version sounds closest to the original but still a tad off. Ideally, I want to be send exactly how I have edited it but I am struggling to get it out just how I have it now. How do I do this? What am I doing wrong on the other versions? Thanks in advance!
