Beautiful spindle! Thanks for the video. Just now getting into Turkish style spinning after spinning other ways for multiple years. Didn’t know one can chain ply on the fly. I have a lot to learn. I haven’t tried it supported either with the Turkish but have two that will allow me to. Your video is amazing and relaxing just to watch!
@maliora12 күн бұрын
I love having a chain ply ball but I kind of hate the process of making one. I always end up dropping a thread and losing tension and then the yarn pigtails on itself and argh. I saw a hint somewhere of using a warping peg to hold the loop while wrapping the ball and that helps. I also like to make my chain loops really long (longer than I can reach) so that adds complexity to the process.
@TheSipnSpin11 күн бұрын
@maliora Yes, I can see how very long chains would make this more challenging. I typically only use a plying ball if I'm traveling with only one spindle, or trying to keep colors together. I chain plied the final spin of this year's Tour de Fleece, and I had all over the place lengths to keep colors clean and trying to do that while at the wheel would have been a monumental challenge!
@miserybutane29812 күн бұрын
I honestly love the concept of chaining the yarn before taking it to the wheel and chain plying from a plying ball. its a great idea! my only thought on this, as a neurodivergent person, is weighing whether adding the extra step is going to cause executive function issues. Honestly, learning to chain ply was one of the last basic plying techniques I learned because of it being daunting as far as chaining as you ply. Just a thought, and if anybody who is also neurodivergent who likes using this method over chaining as you ply wants to weigh in, I really want to hear other perspectives.
@TheSipnSpin11 күн бұрын
@miserybutane298 you raise a GREAT question. I'm looking forward to seeing how others respond too. For me, trying to navigate clean color chains while at the wheel was creating a lot of frustration! Carefully pre-chain plying and keeping colors together has produced yarns that I like a lot more!

I would love to try a great wheel, as well as other wheels in general. I have a Kromski Sonata, and my husband insists I only need one wheel. He says I should be able to do everything I want with one wheel, and all spinning wheels are the same. The Sonata is my first wheel, and it has some good traits, but the double treadle makes me spin too fast sometimes, which results in too much twist in some areas. What do you think? Do you agree with my husband?

@ColorsofHopeCraftsASMR well, I have a Sonata, and it's my dream wheel. Support spindles can be made with a variety of different objects, however, they will likely not be balanced (just adding that because balanced spindles are easier to spin), I did a found object video on how to make your own support spindles. Do you have a pre-101 video that explains such basic terminology? I've been harvesting cotton in Mexico and want to spin it and make something (no idea what!). Sounds like I've set myself up for a big challenge by starting with cotton but it is the fiber that presented itself to me, so here I am.
@TheSipnSpin3 ай бұрын
Thank you! I've always wanted to spin cotton from Mexico! Many, many spinners love cotton, and once you get the drafting rhythm it's really no different from any other fiber. Sadly, I don't really have a cotton 101 video because there are so many already available. I will look into putting one together though! I like the idea of a spotlight that just explains all the spinning terms a new spinner will need to get started!
