Spindle Spotlight #17 - Rope Makers/Twisting Paddles/Mayan Spindles

In this Spindle Spotlight I am featuring a rope making tool that likely evolved alongside fiber spindles. The earliest examples of this type of tool are found in ancient Egypt. While a twisting paddle can be used to spin wool it is primarily a two person tool designed to quickly put the twist into coarser plant fibers (agave, hemp, flax) destined to become rope of some kind.
Spindle Style Pros:
easy tool to find or make
quickly adds relatively even twist
good for learning park & draft
portable
can be used alone or with one other person
fun tool for making bulkier/novelty yarn (like thick & thin)
Spindle Style Cons:
single length limited by arm span (unless you spinning with another person)
keeping the spin going and drafting can be challenging
not good for all types of fiber
would need two tools to ply
paddle does not hold a lot of fiber
easy to over or under twist single
challenge to wind single off paddle

Thinking about the diz....is it fair to say that using a diz is almost a type of pre-drafting, especially on a batt?

I believe so! I certainly think of it as pre-drafting.

@davidmashburn8078 Allen does a few shows a year, but most of his business is custom work. You can contact him through Instagram, join his waitlist, and then work with him directly to design what you want.
