    So good. Thank you. I have a particularly problematic area where I keep getting chipping on a 5 part mold I am trying to make. It’s not undercut, but it is a tight area with no draft for about 0.5”. It’s driving me crazy. As I’m typing this I realize perhaps I should put the thinnest sliver of clay there to draft it? The undercuts animation is amazing. The way you drew it breaking off is painfully accurate hah.

    I think I've said it before, but I'll say it again: I absolutely love and appreciate your videos, every single one of them has me completely engrossed. I always keep a season of Great British Bake Off unwatched incase I hit a period of unshakable depression and I'm thinking I should do the same with your videos except for periods of missing inspiration. I'd love sometime to hear more about your cone 6 vs cone 10 thoughts. I'm a hobbyist with a very modest home studio and sometimes have a bit of FOMO when I think about/read about/youtube about potters firing to cone 10 in gas kilns or whatever (to be honest I'm more into the process of pottery e.g. making my own glazes and such vs actually making anything beautiful!). I'm sure your glazes, clay bodies, etc, are all intended for cone 6 and have low absorption rates where important, etc, but still wonder if this is something you've done any experimentation with or have any feelings on. I think one of the big things I wonder about is how you've found the robustness of your final work in a commercial setting, i.e. how easy does stuff break! Thanks again for such amazing videos.

  • @vantikistudio
    @vantikistudio9 күн бұрын

    Thank you SO MUCH! Great question about the cone 6 vs cone 10. When I began making mugs in 2021, I did cone 5 for a few reasons. 1) firing at that temp would prolong the life of my electric kiln, and 2) the color options for cone 10 were awful. At that time the colors for cone 5 were also sparse (in the food safe range), but velvet underglaze had arrived on the scene and those colors looked GREAT at cone 5, and most dimmed at cone 10. Over the years I bumped up to cone 6. I get better vitrification on my clay body, and the color range of food safe commercial glazes is fantastic these days. My kilns can fire to cone 10 - but I know the elements would wear out much faster. As to the durability of the cone 6 clay, I think it is plenty tough - but it is clay and I definitely don’t make commercial serving ware. There is a HUGE jump in durability from low fire to cone 6, and I think the durability increase from cone 6 to cone 10 isn’t as extreme. I used to feel like “true” ceramics should be cone 10 - but not so much any more 😄 Whew! That was a lot - hope that answers your question!

    As a Sailor, and stuck doing the 'hurry up and wait' thing. I have stared at a LOT of pier posts, ferry bollards, just random wood bobbing in the water... Pier Post Bob looks GREAT! If you ever go down this path again? Sponge on some dabs of dark green and yellow. Every time I've seen a post mossy with algae and seaweed, its light green (new, young), dark green (adulthood), yellow (dying and sun bleaching) and even grey (dead sun burnt). I have no idea what the species are but a few have what can only be called 'a bloom'.

    You know far more about epoxies and castings than I do, but my world is custom cars/motorcycles. So.... Haha, I have one pointer for you. That "Bondo" brand glazing putty, seems like its easy to work with, until you use a better product. If you look for Evercoat, or Upol brand glazing putty, (for the cost, I like "dolohin glaze" or "liquid gold"), you will be blown away by how much easier it is to apply and sand.

    Curious if you just scrape the dried slip right back into the reservoir? Then it just softens overnight and gets re-incorporated during mixing? I believe this would increase the SG, but with such a big reservoir I assume it takes a long time to impact it? How often do you check fluid properties? Do you scrape it totally clean every day? Why is the PVC helpful? Easier to clean? Roll the molds around? Are there ever long periods when you’re not casting. For example say you take a week-long vacation, is the plastic enough to keep it from drying out? Or do you seal it tighter in those scenarios? My god, sorry I was planning to ask one question but the rest just poured out… I scored an amazing deal on a very old rusty table from a retired slip caster. Lehman, 8-foot, pump+nozzle, but no mixer. I spent the weekend taking everything apart, cleaning, scraping, and painting and it looks so nice. Ramping up production this summer and very tired of endlessly checking fluid properties on small batches of slip. Just need a drop in mixer.

  • @vantikistudio
    @vantikistudio23 күн бұрын

    Great questions! The PVC made a huge difference. It’s gentle on the molds, and it is much easier to clean. I could put scraps back into the tank - but I’d have to check the specific gravity daily or weekly, and I just don’t want to spend that time rebalancing the tank 😄 I do know artists who keep a separate reclaim tank that they use to process scraps.

  • @vantikistudio
    @vantikistudio23 күн бұрын

    Oh! And to answer your question about leaving the tank unused. A week or so isn’t a problem. I have a reminder set to cycle the tank every three days - this keeps the slip from gelling too firmly in the pump and hoses. If the tank sits for several weeks I’ll have to check the water and deflocculant levels to make sure the balance is correct.

  • @olegkrishcko109
    @olegkrishcko10923 күн бұрын

    That makes sense. Thanks! I’m all for less rebalancing. Speaking of “gentle on the molds”…is there an issue of plaster dust accumulation in the tank? Could this cause pinholes in glaze fire down the road? I see you use a strainer, but imagine fine plaster dust isn’t filtered by that.
