Fireball Island pt5 - making molten lava with LEDs and a laser cutter: Game Relics

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Greeting explorers - it is time for part 5 of Game Relics: FIREBALL ISLAND!
In this episode we up the danger level of the island by creating a LAKE OF LAVA - watch as I struggle with LEDs and solder to bring the molten magma to life!
For those of you new to this adventure, Game Relics is a series dedicated to taking a vintage game (in this case 1986’s volcanic marble masterpiece: Fireball Island) and turning it into something… epic!
As always put questions in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer. Mahalo for watching and please subscribe!

As an electronics engineer I admire your persistence. (Personally I would've done the wiring a bit differently, but hey... for this application it works just fine, AND the effect is stunning!!!!!). Just FYI: I found this channel because I am interested in making clay pottery (in particular bonsai pots). I will probably use the "slab" approach for the bonsai pots, but your enthusiasm is so infectious (no pun intended), I keep on watching your channel. Might actually try making a slipcast mold sometime.

Brilliant! The lighting adds sooooo much. For Lava 2.0, in addition to adding a diffuser layer (as suggested by another commenter), look into etching your own PC board for the LEDs. It's very simple to do; and , I suspect you'll find as very satisfying process.

@@vantikistudio pro? Oh, gawd no! I was a hobbyist, as a kid. Spent all my allowance at Radio Shack. What I’m talking about is less involved that photo-resist. You can make your tracings on a blank board with acid resist pens, graphic tape, and quick set letters. Bathe in acid to remove exposed copper, clean of resist material, drill holes for leads. Heck, I wonder if your laser cutter could maybe handle it?

I know it's not as exciting a game, (it's really boring, actually) but I would love to see what you would do with the old "Green Ghost Game" board from the 1960s. Glowing ghosts- spooky graves- maybe even a sound board?!?

Not necessarily a board game per se - but I think it will be really neat!

I had thought about building either my complete vintage set into a jumanji like fold out table board.. but after seeing this I really wanna sacrifice my game board with smoothon and build one like yours. Also, I wanna build mine onto poured blue ocean acrylic so it looks like an island and light up the water... so many ideas with this. The game is only half the fun! Killer job so far sir! I would be interested is seeing some still pics of the island construction for reference.

I'm going to do this but make the lava plate from poured acrylic with some char flakes and colors to difuse the light spots. I'm seriously just waiting to see the painted result before I start mine. I have 2 boards and the entire new set that came out. So I have one to sacrifice. I'm excited to do this.
