Glazing a long forgotten Pier Post Bob mug - Tiki Technical Tuesday

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Join me as I puzzle out how to best complete the glazing process of a mug that I mysteriously abandoned 5 years ago! What is the color of the glaze I put on the interior in 2017? Who knows! Why did I bisque fire it, then forget about it? I can’t remember! One thing I DO know is, Pier Post Bob is one of my favorite mug designs and I don’t want to mess it up!
Dialing in the glaze process for a mug is always an adventure - hopefully you enjoy the multi step process as much as I do. There will be masking (both tape AND latex), underglazes, sprayed ceramic glaze, and possibly a second glaze firing!
Thank you all for watching Tiki Technical Tuesday - As always, put questions in the comments and I'll do my best to answer. If you haven’t subscribed yet - please do!

As a Sailor, and stuck doing the 'hurry up and wait' thing. I have stared at a LOT of pier posts, ferry bollards, just random wood bobbing in the water... Pier Post Bob looks GREAT! If you ever go down this path again? Sponge on some dabs of dark green and yellow. Every time I've seen a post mossy with algae and seaweed, its light green (new, young), dark green (adulthood), yellow (dying and sun bleaching) and even grey (dead sun burnt). I have no idea what the species are but a few have what can only be called 'a bloom'.

One of my favorite episodes! Underglaze on top of glaze!...I have had it flake off if applied just a little too heavy! I am doing that Kiln dance today and currently at 463 degrees. Love the result of this mug! Pier Post Bob is by far my favorite of your VanTiki mugs!!!

I found your channel after the last Viva Las Vegas. I'm a Rockabilly guy who is learning about Tiki. I've been watching a lot of DIY Tiki videos because I find making things myself a lot more satisfying than a trip to the store. Your masterclasses have been extremely interesting. Way above my skill level but a fun watch.

I think I've said it before, but I'll say it again: I absolutely love and appreciate your videos, every single one of them has me completely engrossed. I always keep a season of Great British Bake Off unwatched incase I hit a period of unshakable depression and I'm thinking I should do the same with your videos except for periods of missing inspiration. I'd love sometime to hear more about your cone 6 vs cone 10 thoughts. I'm a hobbyist with a very modest home studio and sometimes have a bit of FOMO when I think about/read about/youtube about potters firing to cone 10 in gas kilns or whatever (to be honest I'm more into the process of pottery e.g. making my own glazes and such vs actually making anything beautiful!). I'm sure your glazes, clay bodies, etc, are all intended for cone 6 and have low absorption rates where important, etc, but still wonder if this is something you've done any experimentation with or have any feelings on. I think one of the big things I wonder about is how you've found the robustness of your final work in a commercial setting, i.e. how easy does stuff break! Thanks again for such amazing videos.

Thank you SO MUCH! Great question about the cone 6 vs cone 10. When I began making mugs in 2021, I did cone 5 for a few reasons. 1) firing at that temp would prolong the life of my electric kiln, and 2) the color options for cone 10 were awful. At that time the colors for cone 5 were also sparse (in the food safe range), but velvet underglaze had arrived on the scene and those colors looked GREAT at cone 5, and most dimmed at cone 10. Over the years I bumped up to cone 6. I get better vitrification on my clay body, and the color range of food safe commercial glazes is fantastic these days. My kilns can fire to cone 10 - but I know the elements would wear out much faster. As to the durability of the cone 6 clay, I think it is plenty tough - but it is clay and I definitely don’t make commercial serving ware. There is a HUGE jump in durability from low fire to cone 6, and I think the durability increase from cone 6 to cone 10 isn’t as extreme. I used to feel like “true” ceramics should be cone 10 - but not so much any more 😄 Whew! That was a lot - hope that answers your question!

With latex, if you don't want to ruin your brushes; wet them and put dishwashing liquid on it before the latex. This is what I do when I use it, I'm not sure if it works for every latex though but, maybe worth a shot?
