An avid Tolkien fan since the 1980's, I've read and absorbed The Legendarium many times over and have fixated on details and lore - and now I'm here to answer your questions about The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, Unfinished Tales, The Silmarillion and any of Tolkien's work in general.

I think the first of many fantasies I remember reading was lined with sci fi. The Dragonriders of Pern, The Allelujah Files, etc.
Gandalf had his fireworks. Did they use gunpowder?
7:32 - dumbledores??? Truly Tolkien inspired Rowling.❤
Orcs and goblins the same? What does Gandalf say to Elrond in Rivendell in LOTR? In the movie he says Saruman is breeding orcs and goblin men. 🤔
That's the movie. In the books, he bred orcs and men together. None of the information I give is based on the films. Think of Thorin's sword "Ocrist" which translates to "Goblin Cleaver".
I agree about Elrond. It took me awhile to get used to Weaving having that role, since i had just seen him as an excellent Agent Smith. But I wonder who would have been better cast?
I had once thought that trolls looked like giant versions of Shrek.😅
Tried to recommend you to a friend but he doesn’t have premium and said too many ads, he couldn’t enjoy it.. shame
For whatever reason, the auto palcement went insane on this one, putting them every 3 minutes. I reduced the ads on this video by half. Sometimes KZread just goes a bit crazy.
21:37 - timestamp 😊
I hope you recover fast. I hope its not OSA/SDB thats the reason for sleep issues.
Nothing like that, thankfully. It's just the way my mind works, sometimes I have a hard time relaxing enough to sleep. It comes and goes, and I seem to coming out of it a bit. Thanks very much for the concern!
From an architects constructability perspective, bag end was a series small tunnels off one main tunnel burrowed out of 1/4 of the hill side facing south west with the removed soil making the road up and around the hill. The tunnels are kept rounded for structural stability and would be plastered to keep out moisture and supported with wooden post and lintels at regular intervals along the tunnels that support the sub frame for the finished wood ceiling and floors. The large tree and the shrubbery on the top of the hill are critical to meditate erosion and support the soil above the tunnels. I’ll build one before a leave this world.
I wouldnt mind a video where you just read from Tolkien's works.
I actually have those. Well, one do far with a second on the way. I've been livestreaming reading The Hobbit on twitch and putting the videos here, and will do so with his other works as well.
Why didnt the valar rescue the elves from being tortured by Morgoth?
They did, it's just that Morgoth got to the elves quickly. They sent the guardians to protect the elves while they fought him. This is why Morgoth hated elves, he felt that the Valar turned on him for their sake.
@@John-Sierra they rescued the ones that turned to orcs?
The elves weren't actually turned to Orcs, that was an idea that Tolkien had once, but if you notice it's never directly mentioned in The Silmarillion - just that the Valar were aware that Melkor was capturing and torturing elves, and that Orcs started appearing around the same time. Tolkien later decided that Orcs were not derived from elves, but rather made in mockery of them, using necromancy. Sadly, only Ilúvatar could save the Orcs, and it would require them to repent. While Tolkien stated that he cannot personally imagine Orcs repenting, he had faith that they eventually would.
When I was a teen back in the early 90s I had terribly insomnia and the only thing that could put me to sleep was listening the Martin Shaws reading of the Silmarillion. I no longer suffer from insomnia due to self medication but the audio book of the Silmarillion saved my sanity when I was young.
6:00 - asmr typing.😊
I've just gotten a new and much quieter keyboard, you can still hear it but it's a much more soothing sound.
Hi John, thanks for taking my question on board, much appreciated! 🙂 Thanks for the other guys who engaged with my question on Quora as well and I want to add some more points which where raised by them. Even if Saruman had figured out the connection "The Shire - Baggins - Frodo" it wouldn't be easy to waylay him in or around the Shire with his thugs because *a)* the Shire was still protected by the rangers, *b)* they came in conflict with the Nazghul which wouldn't went well and *c)* we probably didn't want to let Sauron know that he knew more about this affair as he admitted or lead the Nazghul to the ring. Your pronunciation of my nickname was almost perfect, just one detail: In German, if a word _starts_ with "Sp" or "St" the "s" is pronounced like "sh" in the English "shrink". So "Spiel" is pronounced like "shpeel", same with "Sparta". Otherwise you were spot on, you especially got the vowels right. Well done, sir!
ROP showrunners could use your learning.
I'd be happy to help them
I use your longer videos for ambient background/sleeping as well qs learning.😉
Q. In the Two Towers movie, when Gandalf the White meets Aragorn and company in Fangorn forest, says, "Gandalf, that's what they used to call me., " Why did he say that, since he had already met Merry and Pippin carried by Treebeard. They would have said his name out loud.
There's no explanation other than they made a mistake in the movie. In the book, Gandalf was aware that Merry abs Pippin were safe, and they were aware (from the Ents) that he was alive, but he didn't meet them face to face until after Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas. The purpose of showing that in the movie was you're supposed to think it was Saruman, and even when Gandalf is revealed, they overlayed Christopher Lee's voice to make it ambiguous. still is an error on re-watch, though.
Clásico 💪🏽
Answer: like Valinor. (“What would the world be like without Morgoth?”)
More like "non-existent" to be honest.
I like your answer about if melchor never caused strife in the world, Arda wouldn't exist. Think of it like, if there was no conflict in the story, why would Tolkein even write it? Who would read a story about everything being perfect and great and nothing bad happens. The End
Didn't I say that it wouldn't exist without him?
@@John-Sierra you did indeed, I'm in total agreement with you
Gimli’s helmet would look good on you 😏
If I shrunk down to dwarf-size that is!
That opening splash screens always makes me think of the episode ending text screens when you beat doom 😊
What percentage secrets did I get?
@John-Sierra 100 of course, but it was 20 minutes above par ;p
Those par times made the game less fun anyway.
@@John-Sierra apparently it was Jon Romero's times ;p
I believe that, I think I read it in the book Masters of Doom
You have an excellent voice for narration!
Thank you so much!
True
Very interesting that Galdalf randomly found Glamdring in a cave, and only found out from Elrond about its history, but did Elrond actually reveal to him that it belonged to his grandfather?
He only said "The King of Gondolin". Turgon was already a character as The Fall of Gondolin predates The Hobbit in the writing, but this was originally just a cheeky reference to another story. Elrond though is rather disconnected with his family, he was raised mostly by Maedhros and Maglor, and didn't know his parents very well, nor his grandparents.
I have a question that is a good topic for discussion. Why did the war of wrath cause the sinking of Beleriand and what exactly happened to cause it to sink? For instance, current day NATO could probably easily destroy Morgoths forces including the dragons and still leave Beleriand relatively habitable. Why did the host of Valinor need to sink Beleriand in order to defeat Morgoth?
It's because the power being thrown around is magic - the source of creation, and Morgoth had put much of his power into the land itself, so his defeat weakened the land.
@@John-Sierra It seems to me that the only tool the Valar had was a hammer and when all you have is a hammer you see every problem as a nail. Kind of like in WWII when the allies didn’t have precision guided weapons so they had to resort to carpet bombing to ensure they hit what they wanted to hit. The Valar may have simply lacked the skill to focus their power because they weren’t war like and didn’t spend time or energy to develop honing their power to make it more efficient and effective thus avoiding collateral damage. In other words they were sloppy. Which would also explain why they didn’t find Sauron in the war of the powers nor did they initially during the war of wrath. Sauron came crawling to Eonwe after the fact. The Valar were sloppy in warfare and they knew it which was why they were so reluctant to come to the aid of Beleriand because of the hurts they would put on the land. Even Tolkien hinted as much. That’s why I think this is a good topic for debate.
Game looks like old school fun! Is it a Lego game ?
It isn't, though there is a Lego Hobbit game it is more based on the films. I have the game, though sadly it does not tell the full story - The Battle of Five Armies was meant to be a DLC but it never came.
The music is a little too loud.
Re Tolkien books that should be movies: A Beren and Luthien musical!
What happened to Radagast?
We don't know other than he moved out of Rhosgobel and wasn't seen again. He's probably out there doing his thing for Yavanna.
Thanks for the vids. Really enjoy them 👍
Glad you like them!
I love your videos!
Thanks so much!
Didn't Tolkien write somewhere that a mortal in Valinor might suffer some very ill consequences? That perhaps their spirit would be unnaturally tied to their body which no longer ages and decays, leading to great suffering for the spirit as it longs to be free of the mortal coil (similar to the fate of the ringwraiths)? Or perhaps instead their spirit would "rebel" against this unnatural union and unilaterally abandon the body (and the world), leaving a spiritless husk alive to wander Valinor?
What he wrote was more akin to that their life would seem to go by very quickly, as Valinor has a timeless quality. It's sort of like how Sam had a hard time believing that the company spent a full month in Lothlórien - he saw the moon phase and had a hard time with it. Frodo blurted out that the power of Galadriel's ring kept Lothlórien that way. Valinor is like that all of the time, a man's life would seem to go by very quickly.
You and dave of tolkien untangled said the same thing about hugo being elrond's character🤭
Glad to hear it, I enjoy his content.
I would like any comment on the reasons of the increasing compassion and mercy of Frodo, shown especially at Final events in the Shire. Thanks John. José Miguel Granados, Spain
At the beginning, Frodo is a good person, but doesn't have that Patience, Pity and Mercy that he needs regarding Gollum. Gandalf says "you have not seen him" and leaves it at that. Later on, he finds these qualities, and says to Sam "I've seen him". At the very end, he has learned the greatest lesson, that only through that Patience, Pity and Mercy did The One Ring get destroyed, and that it would have been wrong to simply slay Gollum. He felt the same about Saruman, and even offered Gríma to stay - there had been enough war and bloodshed already. Sadly, Saruman pushed Gríma too far, and the Hobbits who had been so wronged craved their own pound of flesh, it made Frodo sick, but he understood their side of it as well.
Hello boss! What would happen if Gandalf gave his ring to Sam? Would it have helped inspire Frodo in his quest?
Probably, though if he was going to pass the ring to anybody, it likely would have been Aragorn. It was too important to give to a Hobbit, even one as sturdy as Sam.
Thank you! Love the videos by the way!
I understand the need for ads, sadly, and I don’t begrudge you for them. Also I have Premium.
Premium views support me! thanks for the support!
@@John-Sierra oh do they? Great, I have premium. Love the channel so much.
Oh, hey, my questions made it in! Cool. I have to say I was really surprised at first when I found this channel, mostly because I always thought of Quora as this kind of website where young teens go to ask weird questions about sex or pregnancy or some silly stuff. Maybe I confused it with some other site. But the answers there - yours as well as others' - have been really helpful and this channel is also really informative. I was really into the Legendarium 4 or 5 years ago, and just having this on in the background has really helped me rediscover and appreciate a lot of the "deep lore" of Tolkien's writings again. Thanks for that. About Amandil though: You said "He might as well have joined with Pharazon then". I think that would require Amandil to admit to himself that maybe his reasons are not that different from Pharazon's, when there were still a lot of other disagreements between them (i.e. Melkorism, Elf-hatred/friendship, etc.). The fact that Amandil even gave a reason for going to the Valar means that he definitely felt like this was something wrong that needed justification. My thought was that maybe he wasn't being entirely honest even with himself. Anyway, I always read that section of the Silmarillion and thought it was kinda weird that Amandil preaches to never join the Kingsmen and go to Aman - but then he does exactly that, except in his case it's okay because "my reasons are pure". I really seem to be the only one who got that impression and everyone else seems to take him at this word, so I guess that was just a weird headcanon I had. And it really does seem like there isn't anything in the books that really supports my reading of it, so I'll just accept that I was probably wrong about that. I probably just read to much into it.
I don't think Amandil was wrong any more than Eärendil were. The Valar were wrong to retreat to Aman and veil themselves from Men, the only one that really got it was Ulmo. Quora did get that crowd after Yahoo Answers closed down, and all of the people from there came over, but there's many wondrous corners of it!
You know, i love falling asleep to lore, and the ads definitely aren’t as soothing as your videos. However, you deserve to get rewarded for all of your hard work and knowledge. Put an advertisement in every minute for all I care. Get your money! I’ll still watch every video 😂 Gratz on 1k. Also I don’t have a quora account so I’ll just ask my question here if that’s cool. It seems like the half elves that are given a choice get the best of both kindreds. Arwen lived for thousands of years before she chose mortality. Is there a deadline for this choice? Seems odd to me to be able to live out a pseudo-immortal life and then choose the gift of men when they tire of Arda (or whatever reason they end up choosing mortality). Maybe I’m thinking about it wrong but I’d love to hear your thoughts! Thanks again for the vids.
There was a deadline, Arwen and her brothers had until Elrond left Middle-Earth. We don't know what the twins chose, though I suspect that they became mortal, the line of Tuor returning to the mortality that it started with.
@@John-Sierra ahh I see. did they give a deadline to Elrond and Elros?
I'm so happy you're explaining the Witch King's death. As my friend group's resident Tolkien nerd, I've had to explain it so many times! And many people have trouble with the fact that the prophecy isn't the same as the Witch King being 'immune' in some way from attacks by men, or that no man could have killed him because of some inherent quality.
Frodo: Gandalf Sir, I have a question? Gandalf: Ask away. Frodo: You've been around for so long, just how old are you? Gandalf: I am this many, Frodo: ...... you didn't raise your hand. Gandalf: That's how old I aaaaaaaam!
(Bam Barrow) hey! Thank you for answering my question about the creatures of pure fire! Apologies for the vague question but you were right on the money. Fantastic channel, all the best.
At 10k do a special where you clean your room. 😂 sorry 😅
Don't be rude. My space is not dirty, and you're not seeing anything but a chair with some boxes on it and my bed. I'm here to share knowledge, not put on a home tour.

Thanks for the feedback, I'll look into it.
In other words he did not say the witch king could not be killed by a man but that he would not be killed by a man. There is a difference.
