    Is it actually stated in the legendarium that Sauron saw through Saruman's deception, or is that your inference?

    Trust me, if I make an inference, I'll be very clear about it, and say it's a theory or something to that effect. It was definitely mentioned in Unfinished Tales that Sauron was not fooled by Saruman for a moment.
