There is much to be said for "shoot local", you don't have to go the famous exotic locations which have been photographed a million times before. I find, like you, that film photography is a very mindful activity, especially, for me, near my home.

I started shooting film around 2010 thanks to a friend that worked for a cool film supply store that was also importing Holga cameras. So first film experience was Holga! To this day I always bring a film camera on my shoots. I think for me film has kept my digital approach less about megapixel this or other chatter about the latest editing trick and more about retaining a "filmic" quality. I also enjoy how it not only slows my shooting down, it affects the models. They become more pronounced in their connection to the camera. Yeah, it's exciting though expensive to shoot film but for me, it's worth it. Now if we can just get people to start printing their images more instead of only looking at pics on their phones, that'll be really cool!

Regarding scanning your own negatives, I recommend that people who are on a budget that don't have a digital camera or film scanner check their local library for a film scanner. Mine let's me check out a Plustek 8100 (with a laptop that has the software already downloaded) for 24 hours at a time.

When in the distant past I have sent my film out to a lab for processing, it often comes back with dust, scratches and even finger prints. I have been processing my own film, both black and white an color, for the last 35 years. I bulk load my black and white film for about $1.10US per 36 exposure roll. Color negative chemistry now costs about $20US for 8 rolls, if you shop carefully.

Sound advice. I have two film cameras, a Canon EOS 500, which I bought for myself, and used until I moved on to digital, and a Practika, which was recently given to me by a friend. I'm now inspired to order some film and try them out. I doubt that I'll go down the road of processing at home, but like the idea of photographing the negatives and converting them to positives. Might try that! 🙂

  • @jonathanramsdell906

Definitely, try bulk loading. It is far less expensive than buying pre-rolled film, even considering the initial outlay of a bulk loader and empty cassettes. Plus, you gain the option of loading however many exposures you want on the roll.

  • @elsvanopstal

A macro lens with 1/1 magnification is the best. But I guess any lens that allows you to focus close can be used. You can even use your phone or tablet as a lightbox (especially for b/w film).

I follow all of these tips (more or less). Processing film at home is pretty easy--anyone who can read instructions and is willing to take the time can do it. When our local labs shut down during COVID, I started processing color and black and white at home and have never looked back. I can do BW for about $1 US a roll in chemicals; about $1.50 for color. I scan on a flatbed scanner and print only a very few images. I would recommend to anyone looking to buy a camera to find out about photo walks or camera swap meets in their area. You'll find people there who probably have cameras to sell and who would love to talk to you and give advice.

Great video! You are such a good speaker; I have no place to develop my film but I usually can shoot 1-2 rolls per month (sometimes). I do digital also. I especilly like cameras with CCD sensors. I don't really have a favorite film camera but I love my pentax 645. Oh yeah, there's more, but maybe another time. Digital cameras: nikon d600, and canon 5d. Anyway, please keep making videos, it's a pleasure watching you talk about stuff, you are so smart, funny, and likeable.

No. I really Really don't want a leica. Hate Rangefinders and the price tag. I used to help promote a camera show where I live. The owners paid me in film and cameras. The owners passed away and could not get in touch with the grandson . We were going to keep it going. if you buy a 3 pack of Ultramax from B&H in NYC it is cheaper. My photo store has a lab and sells all types of film and digital and the lab does a great job of it. I just read china is going to start making Fuji film for fuji.

Reasons to shoot film: 1) not wasting countless hours inside PS/LR 2) the emotional background 2) the haptics, the ergonomics - slick design 3) i've grown up into the 80's with film - since 84. 4) I shoot (almost) exclusive film since 2019 again - and never had given up film ever since 1984 as kid) 5) you care about your composition, about the quality of light way more than anything else 6) that feeling, when you hit the shutter - into anticipation of a good shot 7) all that digital pictures - don't have soul, most of the time, and if so, it does come from 30-50+ year old vintage lenses 8) the look & feel of old 35mm rangefinders & SLRs 9) it's about the whole picture taking experience, the process - not just to hit the shutter 10) with digital - it doesn't cost you anything, you can always think "il'll fix that in post..." or "nah, i delete that frame later..." 11) every frame does count - when you have 36 exposures, be sure that at least some 20-25 are good, and/or some 10-15 keepers 12) the satisfaction, when you hit the shutter, and hear the mirror return 13) in a world of digital A.I. algorithms, digital fakery of all kinds (current smartphones), it's such refreshing, just to load a roll of TX400/Tri-X 400 for instance - and try to capture your mind's eye into real photographs... 14) especially the film grain, the specific "look" of each film - you can use 404585 tools to fake the film look, but only film is real. 15) photons to photos - not pixels to RAW files, for real ! 16) i've grown up with a 35mm SLR and 50/1.7 prime lens 17) simplicity - you only need to set your ASA/ISO, and work with your aperture & shutter speed 18) i simply can't stand current DSLMs with 254 menues, with each level does have 39 submenues 19) there's no chimping, no LCD to watch what you've just shot (it does look most of the time ugly anyway via DSLR/DSLMs) Just to name a few reason(s) whileas i do love to shoot film....

it is not expensive, as I have already written here. Of course, if someone wants to have a darkroom, they have to spend more, but it is also a one-time expense and then only chemicals. But I'm going a different way. Scan the negatives and that's it. Today, analog photography is both cheaper and easier than when it was widely used. a lot of cheap cameras because they are cheap after all, except for the top and cult models. In addition, there is a lot of free advice on the Internet and bliss like this one here 👍. As for movie prices, I haven't smoked or drank since I was born. No spend beyond my mean and I spend more on sweets each month than one roll of film. And 36 photos every month is really a lot. And the most important. Nowadays, analog photography serves as a hobby. We use digital cameras in commercial applications. so we don't have to be a perfect film photographer. We treat it as fun and a break from everyday life

Make sure these a kept in the correct sleeves, black & white negs can be kept in special paper sleeves, while color transparencies require preserves free from PVC, like Clearfile, these can be kept in the appropiate ring binders.

There’s a real challenge in photographing the overly familiar, the places we have been thousands of times. It takes really seeing it with fresh eyes, which can be hard to do. I loved the metaphor of the modern train zipping by, the passengers unable to really see anything as they speed through the world, carried from one point to another, and missing everything in between. Meanwhile, you saunter, stopping, looking, allowing this little tiny part of the world to be everything for you in that moment. Thank you for a terrific reminder that the first thing a photographer (person, really) does is to be, be in the place they are, fully and completely. “Learn to do more with less.” ❤
