I love my Mamiya C33 BUT... (a photo walk gone wrong)

Hello there! Thank you so much for stopping by. In this video I take you along with me while I make some photos in the city of La Roche-sur-Yon (France). It didn't quite go to plan! The past years, I have been neglecting my Mamiya C33 and it's out for revenge. ;) I did manage to get a few shots though, all shot on Fomapan 200.

About a year ago I picked up a C330 from an online estate sale, came with a bunch of cool expired film I'd never seen. I put one roll through it for it to turn out alright, but after putting in a second roll it somehow cut the film in half and stopped exposing the film correctly. It's a nice camera though and I really wanna get it repaired so I can properly use it again. The few photos I got were really awesome for it being such an old camera

To avoid double double exposures you can put the lenscap back on and set the shutter to 1/500 and smallest aperture. So you're shooting blanks over the first image.

Hey Els, it's frustrating but don't be upset with the C33, specially if it's been serving you well for such a long time :-) My C33 (paired with the 105mm) is also getting jammed if I load the film and turn the 5-6 lever rounds quickly before stopping a little bit earlier (and then go slowly), so I have to remind myself to be careful. I also use a Rolleicord that refuses to move to the next frame from time to time (I found a workaround and it's fine), and my Leica M2 just came from repairs as it had light leaks in the cloth shutter (an expensive repair). I could go on and on. So get your C33 repaired and enjoy your other cameras meanwhile! I've been following your publications since more than a decade, happy to see that you keep sharing your photographic adventures

Meanwhile I do have some other options to shoot with but I'm just such a lover of the square format... :)

Well, I love TLRs. I have around 20 of them from maybe 7 or 8 different brands. But I still don't have a Mamiya. To me they are simply to large and heavy compared to the other ones. My favorite is the Voigtländer Brillant S with the Heliar lens and the Compur-Rapid shutter. These cameras are some 30 years older than the Mamiyas, and probably the lightest and smallest quality 6X6 TLRs available. The Voigtländer is actually my main street photography camera for candid photos. I think I will buy myself a Mamiya TLR anyways earlier or later, just to add it to my collection. I doubt that it will become a regular when shooting because of its size and weight, but than I not do suspect that it's not "my" type of camera any longer, but know it. Maybe I will be converted after using it, who knows ... When I want use wide or tele lenses or need to do close ups on 6x6 (e.g. portraits, or macros), I use a SLR. Much easier to use (e.g. no parallax), and again lighter and smaller.

Jamming or sticking of the wind-on lever has been a problem of my Yashica-Mat TLR. The problem is a little lever on the wind-on mechanism sticks and doesn't allow the re-set lever to fall back into place. The cure is to remove the wind-on lever and side plate and clean and judiciously re-lube with thin oil. Job for the Repair Shop! The C33 is probably similar. The film has been wound on, the shutter cocked, but the double exposure lock hasn't released, so you can't wind on or fire the shutter.. (You had problems with the DE lock as well as I understand). I enjoy you videos!

A very nice video! Your lens is an older version with the silver ring around the taking lens. They are sometimes problematic and almost impossible to repair once they break. I suggest you look for the newer version 80mm f/2.8 with the black ring. If possible, with the blue dot on the lens shutter cocking lever. They are the best quality, both in filming and reliability. The good thing about the Mamiya TLR's is that lens changing is quite easy.

Els, My C3 always worked fine, but I was told that the film advance gears were nylon, and sometimes they wear out through rough usage. If the C33 also cocks the shutter as it advances the film, those gears may also be worn out. You can use the lens cap to block light and avoid double exposures, but you might also use the the knob that allows you to change lenses. That knob put a "dark slide" behind the lens to block light while releasing the "lock" that hold the lens in place. As far as your focussing problem, a focussing test would help verify the problem. Create a test pattern (some lines of varying thickness on paper), paste the pattern to a board, make sure the test pattern and camera are perfectly vertical, and shoot some film (using your built-in magnifier to focus) at varying distances. This is called a "bench test," and your film should match focus. If not, then your ground glass may no longer be in its proper place, your mirror may not be in its proper place, your lens may not be sitting properly flat on the camera body, or your lens may have a loose element. None of these conditions are likely, however. If the C33 also takes 220 film make sure that it is set up for 120 film (if you're shooting 120 film). This is important because 120 and 220 film are different thicknesses and require different pressure to keep them flat. Also make sure that the camera back is not wobbly because this affects the proper function of the pressure plate. If you decide to buy more lenses, I suggest you look for "blue dot" Mamiya TLR lenses. They are sharper than the older TLR lenses. Hope this helps.

  • @landesnorm

Els, A few other things on the focussing problem...the "bench test" I described is very rudimentary, and you might contact a camera repair for their bench test which should be more conclusive. But before you do that, look at the "taking" lens itself. See if it has any "haze" starting, check for fungus growing inside the lens, and look for excessive dust or small particles inside the lens. These all can affect focus. If you have haze, fungus, or excessive particles, they might be cleaned out by a repair person or possibly yourself, but often stopping down the lens may improve the problem enough to be acceptable. Also take a look at the shutter blades and iris blades. They should be clean and free of oil. If not, talk to a repair service and get their opinion about its affect on focussing.

LOL But beautiful Els did get a few great shots I know you both will cherish. Thanks for the walk along as hopefully maybe the camera needs a little sevicing as maybe its just a dust build up as I had a crime scene photographer I worked with once tell me this was his biggest issue when shooting crime scene photos as with all the different environments he shot this seem to be a issue that he ran into and kind of went old school and had a towel he surround the camera with as he was shooting which seem to be his answer. He said it was it keep the camera at a perfect temperature where without micro drops and dust created issues for him with his film cameras. He was thrilled to get a DLSR but said it seem to him the film was what always give him the best detailed shots. He's not around anymore otherwise I would see what camera it was he used as it been a long time ago but I think maybe he used such a camera as yours. Hope overall Gregory and you had a great day together despite the camera issue that made you plans not go as planned. Looking forward to next walk along be safe you guys.

Nice video (except for the knee sound...) The main problem of the C33 is the weight. Therefore, I settled on the C220, which is much lighter. It lacks some of the creature comforts of the more advanced models, but in the end the weight convinced me. I never had much problem with my camera, but the lenses gave me endless trouble with unreliable firing.
