I was quite skeptical of this production at first, the initial visuals conveying a totally lunatic, cheap and nasty "Hogwarts" and "Harry Potter" feel, testament to the writers' obvious ignorance if not downright disrespect the source material (witches? Ahhh! = let's default to the Wizarding World - that's what people know and want!), in addition to an "Empress Natalya" who was never in the books and the advancement of the younger, hotter sister (a minor character at best!), Tula Harkonnen, as lead, over the Atreides, Raquella Berto-Anirul and Valya Harkonnen of the book, owing to greater eye candy potential... I mean, there was this visual of a generic Victorian haunted house/British boarding school building on a Scottish moor making the rounds, completely ignoring the fact that the sisterhood originated in a seaside cliff/grotto on the tropical jungle planet Rossak... But the departures of writers, showrunners and actors from the project as well as the success of the Villeneuve films must have worked wonders in eliminating the most absurd and egregious inaccuracies born of stupidity and laziness and superficial grasp of the original works, let alone canon. At least it now displays the stylish look of the Villeneuve Dune with heavy Foundation vibes (on a smaller budget) which has done a world of good. I will watch this, as opposed to hate-watch. I am also gratified that the reverend mothers at this point were cast with rather plain but expressive women and not vapid sex-pots (that came later actually, in the Muad'dib timeline, which is why I didn't like the austerely good-looking Rebecca Ferguson as much in the Jessica role as more book-accurately ravishing hothouse-beauty, Francesca Annis of the Lynch movie, as, let's face it, the Bene gesserit consorts of the later empire were literal overpowered honey traps). I am suspending my judgement as of now.

I maintain the movies are often the woes part of Star Wars. Books, comics, and shows are more interesting in general.

Some thoughts How long of a stable period does it take to create a sophon? How is it better for the San-Ti to go through the expense of destroying, then occupating earth vs. finding a suitable home on any of the nearby stars?

So hard to get through this video. Too much negativity. Also Quinn just keeps repeating over & over & over & over & over again how it looks too much like the Dune films (duh) & House of the Dragon. So tedious. We get it, move on. Stop repeating your self.

Quinn, thanks for your wonderful work in SyFi. Who once said "The problem with science fiction is that it is much too unimaginative". Now that we know season 2 is a go, do you think Netflix will wrap the story up with all that still needs to happen or gamble for a third?

Well, The Culture sounds like hellscape. What is the point in being a good person when it is merely enforced through constant observation and punishment (through drones and AI), and genetic modification making you comply on a physical level with the expected norms of society? There's no choice there, only submission.

SURELY...looking like DV Dune is a GOOD THING? Biggest franchise in a while now launched...world a bit gaga for it...GoT S8 failure... We NEED a transition piece...like this...hook noobs...but hold the initial hands of long term fans. Space Game of Thrones...is PRECISELY what this needs to be...to start with. It's that simple. Do love you Quinn...but the levels of Dune gatekeeping going on with this reaction to the trailer is a bit silly. If it had veered far from looking like DV work...no doubt there would be just the same reaction but moaning doesn't look DV like enough. Can't win. This is the Dune for the meantime. With high expectation...and low expectation. Brian a writer...so...yeah... Space GoT...just Go With It ❤

In your statements brother...you hit apon a problem the television & movie industry always suffers... Everything is judged by what came before. For the lens to shift it takes great caution or throw caution to the wind. ... I'm holding off all judgement until I've watched the entire series.

I'm gonna say, before I watch this review, that I thought the first season was very good. It genuinely made me cry on episode 7 multiple times. This being said, a lot of the harder science fiction discussions were just not there & parts of the show, especially in the first 2 episodes, felt very preachy. I'm hesitantly optimistic that the parts of the show that really worked - the interpersonal plots & performances, will continue to work in the next season. But I don't think for a second the extremely weird science fiction elements the rest of the stuff & the third book explore will be properly represented due to the show runners (iykyk) & the need for mass appeal (Netflix mandate).

If you want another scifi work that’ll give you an existential crisis, I highly recommend reading Blindsight by Peter Watts, if you haven’t read it. It’s one of the more internally distressing reads I’ve had and wish it would be adapted as a short TV series.
