Herbert’s book was inspired by a 1971 mock-documentary, “The Hellstrom Chronicles”, which highlighted the ruthless efficiency of hive insects in pursuing survival. It was narrated by a fictional Dr. Nils Hellstrom, who. Became a character in Herbert’s novel. I remember seeing the film back in 1971. The actor who portrayed Hellstrom gave him a very unsettling quality, as if he was secretly smirking at you, because he knew something vital that you did not.

If I remember there’s a scene in the book where Herbert may be nodding to that. There’s a scene where one of the agency characters notices a group of filmmakers recording a hive and was unsettled by the utter stillness of the scene, knowing the people should’ve been moving about for such a thing, all the while Helstrom is touring the guy around.

Yeah, I saw that film when I was younger - I actually thought it was real. Same for Orson Welles hosted doc about Nostradamus.

I've never understood why this masterwork isn't much more well known. The most honestly frightening horror novel I've ever read.

My take is that I just never heard of it until watching this video. It must not have had that critical mass needed to become as well known as other books like Dune and Ender's Game.

DUNE overshadows all of Frank Herbert's work, just as LORD OF THE FLIES overshadows Golding's other novels

I was fresh out of the service when this book came out so I could relate to the hive. The ;first time I read it, I was left cold and shaking. The next time I saw this book in a library( I had forgotten all about it) I saw things I had missed or did not remember the same. I think this book was one of the best warnings against utopia.

I always thought this book was so criminally underrated. The first three Dunes are untouchable but Herbert did solid work outside of that, particularly this novel and The Godmakers.

There's also The Green Brain, I think was the title of it. I loved that book. If you guys liked Hellstrom's Hive, you should read it too. Oh, right, and The Godmakers. Also, having read a lot of his work that wasn't part of the Dune universe, I can basically recommend almost all of them. The Dosadi Experiment, The Heaven Makers, The Santaroga Barrier, and of course all of the Destination Void books. Seriously, his work outside of Dune was really good too and I've never understood why people didn't like those as much or more than Dune. Don't get me wrong, I understand why Dune has become so iconic with the depth and breadth of the material. Still, his other work is just as good, if in a different way than Dune.

@@colinscutt5104 Excellent book. The Green Brain and The Jesus incident were maybe a little bit ahead of their time, the former about ecological disaster and the latter about a rogue AI. These are themes we take for granted now.

Yesssssss I need a new book! At this point you're just doing the work of seeking new scifi literature for me lmao. I have a weird relationship with your channel where I'll see a new video, watch the first minute or two, then acquire the book and read it, and finally come back to your video about it.

Coalescent by Stephen Baxter is another great book that explores the concept of the human hive. Though the start is a bit slow. Highly recommend it, Quinn!

After reading the Dune series, I went on to find as many Herbert novels as I could. I particularly like the Destination Void series and would love to see it become a series. I was also keen on the Whipping Star series which was whole another universe built by Herbert.

Ive managed to collect afaik all of his non dune novels not one is terrible , you can almost feel him trying out ideas that later got into dune

This is why I love sci-fi. By exploring all possible extremes, we can better visualize what we do and don't want for the future of life. The answer is often that we don't want either extreme, but a synthesis of the two. In this case, we probably don't want either hyper-individualism nor a hive-mind, but a synthesis that balances individual liberties with the greater good of society. IMO we can fully actualize by carefully walking that line.

As a massive insect nerd (and with the Bene Tleilax being my favorite faction in the DUNiverse) I really enjoyed Hellstrom's Hive... Thank you for covering the story!

If you presented our modern society to the ancient peoples, they may very well describe us as more like an ant hive than a human tribe. Industrial societies at the macro scale of governments and corporations are astonishingly unlike our simian relatives and uncannily similar, instead, to the complex logistical networks of ant hives or bees, although at the micro scale we still do form simian-like tribes.

Dude, I absolutely love this channel! Such great reading recommendations and narration/commentary of the topic and subject of these books, to give you a feel of what they’re like. Also if I’ve already read one, it’s fun to hear another persons thoughts on it and just hear another talking about a book I like. Every upload is a pleasant surprise, I’m always waiting for another video to drop

This reminds me a lot of the Kimera Ants of Hunter x Hunter, and the way Togashi explored the implication of an ant-like humanity and how they would interact with normal humans. Especially the part where they need the genetic diversity of the human population, that Togashi turned into the ability of the queen of the Kimera Ants to retain the traits of the individuals she ate and transfer it into the workers and soldiers of the hive. Maybe Togashi was inspired by this book.

The chimera ants are definitely the most creative and horrifying (and kinda sad) fantasy race I've come across in fiction.

There are a lot of Sci Fi references in Anime, that was partly why the Sy fy channel started showing it in the 90s. There was a lensman anime, based on the books, and i believe macross is also based off of some books as well. What is truly sad, is how the economic crash of Japan killed their love for the future. You see this in the shift in media over there after 1990. It went from bright spacy operas to dystopian sadness, to now the isakai genera where people feel they are better off dead then living. The sad part is the future we are getting, is the future Phillip K dick wrote about. Because here we are, communicating and sharing our emotions via an empathy box. Showing our cat pictures to others not just to get validation but to also cheer them up.

Great dive into a really awesome novel. As with some of the others posting here, I already read "The Green Brain", and then I saw the film "The Hellstrom Chronicles" when released. When Frank Herbert released " Hellstrom's Hive" I thought it was going to be a rehash of the aforementioned film. I really enjoyed the novel and recommend it to other fans of Frank Herbert who may have missed this gem. Thanks Quinn.

After Dune and Destination: Void, my favorite novel from Frank Herbert was "The Santaroga Barrier". It plays with the same concepts than "Hellstrom's Hive", you should read it if you haven't already.

I read/listen to this novel every few years. Such an underrated piece of amazing fiction. Can`t believe they haven`t made a film adaptation.

The Hive was a freakishly scary concept because it wanted to rob us of our individuality and replace us as you said and the way they used humans, as the women were used by the Bene Tleilax, was horrifying. It was the Eugenics dream basically. I am glad you touched on this novel. Frank Herbert wrote a lot MANY more stuff beyond Dune that needs to be further explored and discovered by sci-fi readers. Hellstrom's Hive is one of my favorite sci-fi books. It's not one I consider a jewel like the Dune saga but it is a good one to pick from in the genre. The Dosadi Experiment is another good one from Herbert.

Yeah, it's not just putting society before yourself but the entire abandonment of the self and becoming a smaller part, almost an organ or a single cell, within a much larger organism. It's a pretty disturbing and horrific idea if you value your autonomy and sense of self. Disturbing and horrific, but definitely interesting.

In my "headcanon", as the kids say, I tend to think of Hellstrom's Hive as part of the deep background of the Dune series, from before humans became spacefaring. They are, in my personal canon, the primary origin of the Bene Tleilax.

I have not read this book but I am familiar with the concept of hive societies and hive minds from books I've read in the past. Listening to this podcast and hearing axolotl mentioned I was immediately reminded of The Clade, a benevolent drone swarm who were originally created by the AI's and humans as war drones to fight against the Prador but had gone rogue and turned against their creators to do the bidding of the belligerent ancient Jain races.

Much agreed, Reynolds has a fantastic imagination. Another sf author with the same writing style is Gary Gibson in particular his Stealing Light trilogy which I could not get enough of and so was overjoyed when a stand alone novel set in the same universe titled The Marauder came out.

The audio in these are so good.

I remember reading this book the first time in the early 80s when I was 9 or 10 and I really loved it, probably re read it every 10 years since and love it even more each time. This and the Dosadi Experiment are among Frank's best work outside of Dune , though I havent read a Herbert book or story that I did not like. Destination Void and its sequel the Jesus Incident are also top notch

This book sounds so interesting thank you for sharing it! Im actually writing a book similar to this one and it is about a Hive Mind communication intelligence system and the realm has it’s own leader that is spread throughout the whole realm through nerves and tendrils that resemble a nervous system. And since the creation of Earth, the leader of the Hive Mind or Collective Intelligence was against it. Flora and fauna is also strange within that world that is parallel to ours. I hope you liked it, i began to write it recently ❤

One of my favorite books, read it few times

I remember reading this as a teenager and found it very disturbing at the time. But also intriguing and thought provoking.

A great book that also tackles this concern with how would a human society post-capitalism look like, called The Unincorporated Man by Dani and Etyan Kollin (IIRC). It has some great intrigue, technology, storytelling and personally the idea of personal incorporation sounds like a good idea

Outside of the Dune series, this is my favorite book by Herbert. Must have read it a dozen times. Kind of wished it had been adapted into a film or a TV series, since it never really gets wrapped up at the end. I always wanted to know what happens next.

Great video. I haven’t read any of his non Dune books yet. Perhaps some time in the future. I’m still on a Dune kick. I’m rereading the saga….again. I’ve read Dune 4 times. Messiah 3 times. Currently rereading Children and the will also be my second time through.
