The Stolen Journals | The Secret History of The Universe

Ойын-сауық

The Dune universe is set in the year 10191 AG, this is about 20,000 years in our future. The Spacing Guild was formed after 10,000 years of history following the 20th century. The Guild was formed after a long age of darkness following the Butlerian Jihad, in this age no one could travel safely through space due to the inability to use thinking machines. 1, in every 10 vessels were lost in this age due to the inability to properly navigate during this era. When the guild was formed, this problem was solved and a new epoch was created “AG,” After Guild. Following the ascension of Paul Atreides more than 5,000 years passed throughout the original Dune Saga. By the year 13500 AG The Worm God Emperor Leto II ruled from Arrakis, which was by then known simply as Rakis.
The God Emperor more so than anyone who had lived before him understood that recorded history was riddled with inaccuracies, half-truths, and outright lies, the history of humanity was shaped by those who recorded it. The Stolen Journals would be Leto’s own record of his long life, his family history, and his musings on the universe, humanity, and reality.
In the centuries following the death of the worm god emperor, several volumes of his journals were uncovered. And as they were uncovered they shed new light on historical events. It was in fact the Spacing Guild who originally translated the stolen journals through a method which came to be known as the Guild Key. Most of the Journals had been originally printed upon Ridulian crystal sheets by use of a device called a dictatel which allowed the god emperor to transmit his thoughts directly. The dictatel was a device of Ixian manufacture, Ixian tech was frowned upon in the imperium because the Ixians toed the line of what was permitted by the Butlerian Jihad. Leto had recorded his thoughts through the use of the dictatel for many centuries, he even recorded his dying thoughts.

And yet again, we are to believe that the God Emperor is anything but a tyrant, just because _his own_ memoires say so? _Of course,_ he himself would not see him as a tyrant. Humans always invent fabulous mental gymnsastics and stories that explain their often crazy and immoral behaviour. The journals of the God Emperor are not credible sources of the truth, because as the most powerful human who ruled over everyone else, he had every reason to lie. Lie, like all authoritarians do. Authoritarians through all history have always justified their terrible rule via grand stories of threats only they could see. It's just manipulation. Why is this not discussed?

One of Herbert's greatest and ongoing sources of humor in God Emperor was Leto's relationship with the Ixians and their creations. He knew that humanity would need shields from prescience like no chambers and no ships, as well as artificial navigation machines and so on. Plus, he seems to have genuinely liked Malky despite his knowledge that the Ixians were conspiring against him.

Nice video. It's always good to see another discussion about Leto ii. I some times wonder how the Dune cast including Leto ii after all their experiences in the books were said and done would have reacted to the disastrous events in Warhammer 40k and the varies variables and magnitude of critical mistakes behind them. The fall of the Dark Age of Technology with the Men of Iron rebellion and Xenos betrayal of mankind, the Age of Strife, the Unification of Terra, the Great Crusade, and the Horus Heresy and the ten thousand years of stagnation, forever wars, paranoia, unstable, and self justified ignorant tyranny within the Imperium of Man before the galaxy was split in two by a great rift of twisting maelstrom horror. A thread hanging upon a knife edge of a few individuals who can halt total calamity from passing. With almost no options left for humanity to leave the galaxy due to so many variables constraining the development of such a option. Constantly pushing mankind into this ultimatum. I imagine Leto ii would be the most understanding of many portions of the God Emperor of Mankind's indifferent, detached, impatient, and lost of comparison with a overly ambitious mindset. Since he had similar experiences for 3,500 years (but he foresaw and planned for every mistake and decision effectively.) How GEoM's perceptions and lost of humanity were formed from his experiences over the ages and the disasters he saw. Which Leto ii probably wouldn't completely blame him for however he would later hold him responsible and rebuke him when they were most needed especially spiritual needs with proper guidance. I believe Leto ii would also be the most experienced and perceptive one of the Dune cast to develop multiple harsh constructed criticisms after a while self reflecting on many of the God Emperor of Mankind's personal tunnel visioned decisions in the circumstances he made them even though there are terrible hellish forces that exists in their universe's galaxy but also there are ways to stop them and develop the proper countermeasures and defences vigilant enough to resist them with a strong culture. Something GEoM failed to do and kept a unnecessary secret to the extent that secret became universal enforced doctrine by the hierarchy and the multi dependent institutions who deliberately restrain technology and encourage the subjugation of entire planets and loyal armies over these secrets and policies while constantly batting with each other in secret for authority and influence. What would Leto ii have done and not have done in the God Emperor of Mankind's situation?

Now this is the best theory that anyone has ever come up with. Plus these journals serve as proof of how Denis can do a live action Version of God Emperor of Dune one day. Also, these journals can connect all of Denis’ Dune movies altogether

8:30 Dude, I love your theory on Leto II opening the movies with his quotes. I really hope you're right and that these movies go through at least God Emperor of Dune.

I really hope they keep making Dune movies at least as far as Chapterhouse. It’d be really cool if they got James McAvoy to come back as Leto II to play the worm god

I don't know why, but "it's a fun idea I thought of" jumped out at me. For all our talk of how grand, epic and wonderfully written these series are, it's really important to remember the fun to them. We like these stories because they're fun. Such a simple yet fundamental element to life we too easily overlook.

Hello Quinn. Thank you for a great video as usual. Could you please consider doing a video on the observations made by non-main characters? I find princess irulan’s “in my father’s house” from first book and the scholars’ observations from God Emperor to be the most captivating parts of the story.

I went to see pt 2 yesterday and I was scratching my head over the intro. Of course it's spoken by the God Emporer, it's being hidden in plain sight ! Considering it's my favourite book, I'm surprised I didn't put 2 + 2 together ! That makes perfect sense ! Wow. Mind blown...

There’s a line near the end that shook me and it’s what I keep thinking about. As they process across the bridge, Hwi, noticing the throngs of crazed worshippers, asks out of fear if some wish to sacrifice her. And in response, Wormgod bluntly like he does, says “some of them do.” I am convinced right then he knew what was about to happen, that they were both about to die for his golden path. That she was part of his end, and that it was HIM that was meaning to sacrifice her. And most importantly he was showing her his hand while keeping it obscured, the way someone who’s getting away with murder leaves clues pointing to them. Which truly makes him the villain in her story. To be so cold and so calculating and prescient, but so far away from her and her best interests. If Leto is so openly the villain in that moment, what if he’s been a true villain all along. What if he has no prescience and the whole thing has just been the justification of a typical tyrant. And how did I still so willingly go along with all of it. I only finished this book and I got a lot stewing to do before I’m sure on all of this, but damn. That ending has me really thinking.

Love your channel! One thing I always found a little strange about the 3rd book onwards is the contradiction with Herbert’s original message; to be weary of charismatic leaders. Despite the horror that humanity undergoes during Leto II’s reign, it was ultimately for the benefit of humanity and he alone knew how to ensure the survival of the human race. That always seemed to fly in the face of his original message for me. Curious what other people think about this.
