The Most Powerful Beings in the Dune Universe

Ойын-сауық

They'll be a few minor spoilers in this one, guys. As I said earlier, power in Dune is not typically discussed in these terms, but considering the fact that there are several characters in the Dune universe who would seem superhuman if they were to appear in real life, maybe it's actually an interesting topic. So I thought it would be fun to rank the characters. Let’s go from least powerful to most powerful. Also, I will only be discussing Frank Herbert’s Original six Dune books for this video!

The fact that he intentionally made humanity despise him as a tyrant for the greater good of their preservation speaks volumes on his ability to wield power-and expecting nothing in return. Although Frank Herbert died before completing his version of the overall story, I think Murbella should be given honorable mention. At the end, by her overall combined Bene Gesserit and Honored Matre force, she takes over leadership of both the Bene Gesserit and the Honored Matres, although some will not accept her. Using a somewhat weak Star Trek analogy, it's like a being with the most superior logic of a vulcan combined with superior human emotional intuition. She becomes a reverend mother and has all the training of both the Bene Gesserit and the Honored Matres. She also receives all of Odrade's memories before Odrade dies.

I really think murbella is a strong contender for the top spot, or really at very least just under Paul. Nobody else has her training and her experience. Odrade is on the list, and rightfully so, but she was helpless at the hands of people murbella dispatched so quickly most of the room didn't even have time to process what they saw. I think this is a big oversight.

I agree, in terms of raw fighting power Murbella would easily dispatch everyone on this list except for worm-form Leto (maybe Teg could outspeed her though). The HMs improved themselves in very different ways to the BGs, and while the BGs have way more control over their bodies, the HMs have far more raw power. So a combination of both is going to be incredibly strong.

I think in the matters of duel fights all of the chatacters before Heretics are kinda irrelevant (except for God Emperor of course, he still comes on top). It's heavily implied that even in the old empire after thousands of years martial arts have really evolved, and all of the older heroes, as powerful as they were, are now feared and respected for their wisdom and prescient abilities, not for physical power. In this regard the top would be Leto II, then (close second) Miles Teg, and then, afret a big gap, probably Lucilla or Murbella, as it's shown that Honored Matre's reflexes and physical abilities are ahead of an average Reverned Mother's, but Lucilla was able to easily overpower Murbella before her bene gesserit training (and we know that after it the latter became the most powerful in both sisterhoods)

It’s been awhile since I read this series but one of the themes I liked about it was that despite all the meticulous planning involved to create a super being that would propel humanity forward, it was love that set things in motion. The only ones I didn't really care for were the ones that took place between Dune and Dune Messiah. But that's just me. The Machine Crusade books, Guild books, and the sequels based on Frank's notes are well worth the read. In my opinion. These books don't deserve the hate they get. And Wayne is totally right...The Dune Encyclopedia is NOT canon! Frank liked it and allowed it, but said it was not the way he was going. I don't understand why so many people embrace that book but hate Brian and Kevin's work. I know Frank didn't hate Brian's stuff, since they worked together themselves. But...Haters gonna hate.

I've talked about Teg to others and I think you are missing a few key things about him. He was an unrealized KH who could bridge time and space physically and had a limited prescience. Teg is stated to be able to come up with a winning strategy to any conflict for the Bene Gesserit or the mission at hand immediately which is why the Bene Gesserit brought him back. Teg can see No ships which means he is able to bridge time and space in a way no other KH can. He also has a form of prescience that allows him to have a form of double vision that shows him short term possible outcomes. The last KH power that is mistaken as super speed but is never stated as such by Frank Herbert is his ability to move through Space and Time that appears as if he is moving fast. I know what you are thinking.... Hold up, what you talking about Willis? Teg actually is slowing down time and then is moving through it. Frank Herbert also states that it appears he is blinking at times from one spot to the next. Read Heretics again and you'll catch it. We, as the audience, assume that Teg has been granted with super speed but I think this was intentional and would have been brought further out in the seventh book. No other KH had this ability as all the KH abilities were simply in the mind and not the physical body. Moving across space and time physically has a greater metabolism cost and the longer Teg maintains it the greater the cost. Teg is an interesting look at where Frank Herbert was headed with the subject of KHs. We had Duncan who was becoming one and Teg who I think was well on his way too. Also, I find it interesting that Teg's awakening is also similar to receiving the Water of Life. I believe Frank Herbert was setting Teg up to end up being the Oracle who would have gathered the Navigators as a force. Makes sense now, doesn't it? A being who could cross space and time physically, able to define paths, able to see No Ships, and define winning strategies instantly. Yeah, I think Frank Herbert made mention of the Oracle in his notes and Brian Herbert didn't connect the dots and thus made a whole new character. Teg was the Oracle and probably the Ultimate KH.

I pretty much agree with your ranking, and I like that your approach to "power" is more subtle than just "who'd win in a fight?" I will say I think Miles Teg or the final Duncan might beat Paul in a fight. And you didn't mention Ghanima, who is probably more powerful than Alia or Jessica. And what about Murbella (Honored Matre meets Bene Gesserit)? Maybe she's just in the expanded stuff... I don't remember for sure.

Historians can acquire a very special physical power, exercised with pen and paper, to better control the historical narrative presented to future generations. This special power can often be overlooked, yet Leto ii seemed to pay peculiar attention to this fact and even exercised such power as he saw fit. The ability to drastically influence a far distant future people by conjuring myths and legends is a current feature of our society today. Good work on the list!
