Turbulence.. To be expected in a high temp desert. Hot air rises and cold air descends and flying through those columns results in turbulent ride. Likely it all smoothed out around twenty thousand feet.
I'm surprised Hawaiian Airlines doesn't fly to DFW, ATL, ORD or MIA.

Thank you for sharing your trip. Those long-haul flights are hard sometimes. Were you able to sit in First Class or Premium Economy while using your airline membership points? And were you able to spend some time in the Hawaii Airline lounge or shared lounge before and after you flight?

We bought first class seats. It makes the trip much more enjoyable. We didn't use the Premier Club before this flight because we flew from Lihue and connected to our Seattle flight and only had about an hour in between flights. We did stop in for a snack and drink before our flight to Lihue since we got to the airport early and had time to kill.

Why Delta and American insist on using that single-aisle sardine can on a flight lasting at least 5 hours, but can go to 6 or even 7, is beyond me.

I remember the days when it was all widebodies to Hawaii. Sadly almost every flight from the West Coast is now on a narrowbody. That's why we've switched to flying Hawaiian. A330 with lie flat seats beats all the other domestic first class seats on the other airlines. It does involve connecting in HNL to get to Kauai even though the other airlines fly nonstop from Seattle. Problem with Delta's return flights is that they are redeyes.
