The hate of the village people, the mother, and the kid even though zuko helped them reflects how they really despise the fire nation. Hatred that is deeply rooted from the violence of the 100 year war is and its effects on the earth kingdom (and the rest of the world)

It is interesting to note the breaking of gender roles the fire nation has. Zuko, the firstborn son, is the one Ozai doesnt care for, but cares more for his daughter, because she showed more promise in his eyes and was the better "symbol of power" for the fire nation lineage, which is why he had no problems when ordered to kill Zuko (thankfully Ursa intervened) and also why he had no problems banishing Zuko and sending him on that wild goose chase to get the avatar all while grooming Azula to be the next in line

Really enjoying your reactions, you have some really fun, entertaining commentary and a great sense of humour. Love how you pay attention to smaller details and try to analyse things within the greater context of the show and continuity rather than just taking things at face value, very entertaining to watch

What happened to Ursa will be briefly explained in 3rd book, but her full story is explained in Avatar's comic The Search that took place 2 years after war. I don't want to spoil you anything so i'll stop there. Zuko is very interesting and complicated character and i'm glad we saw another part why he's like that in this episode.

yeah, Ursa's story is really interesting one. It's more explained in one of Avatar's comics called "The Search". You can check it out once you finish the show :)

If you pay attention, everything that Azula says is things she’s most likely heard Ozai say. She was already getting preferential treatment and spending more time with him because of her bending

Some brilliant perspective in this episode, as you said. This show really does character development pretty well, as it goes on and proves that it's never black and white. I really love Zuko's straw hat, wanderer look here, while he's searching for himself... those flashbacks are soaked in decent lore. I'm afraid the question of where Zuko's mum is will have to wait... will they explain it in the show? We'll see. Still a whole heap of amazing episodes ahead though, can't wait to enjoy more with you man; I haven't enjoyed ATLA this much, since my first watch

2:54 Welcome to Western, Buddy. 3:27 Such a perfect timing for a "compensation" joke. More on that in due time. 3:42 FIRST - children tend to exaggerate scale of events, or more so than adults at least, so it's pretty realistic. TWO - it might imply that not having ass instantly kicked in confrontation with them already considered a win by locals. Personally, I leaning for the latter, all things considered. 3:54 I was going to make a comment here, and you immediately paused and talked exactly about what I was going to say. Have a high five! 5:18 Surprisingly enough, way more grounded (no pun intended). 5:47 Told ya. 6:13 Where do we start?.. 6:21 She's might be even 9, actually, depending on month of Azula's birth and Iroh's breaking The Wall. She was born in 85 AG, and those flashbacks take place in 95 AG. Oh, and AG in ATLA calendars stand for "After [Air Nomads] Genocide" 7:07 Bully scam being bully scam. 7:12 A little more Classic Western. 8:17 Fans know white line I wanna quote here REALLY BADLY, but you will have to wait for it for yourself. A little between-audience, wink for now. 8:41 How funny you should mention Fire Lord assassination... 8:58 Also, engraving on that knife of his, also pretty much whole Zuko's ark to this point. 9:53 Well, it says "Made in China... I-I-I mean, Earth Kingdom", so... You know... 10:15 Did I already mentioned, what a blast it is, to see you making those connections out loud, where some either stay silent or wouldn't catch that? Now as good time as ever to say that. 10:40 Remember that part about compensation at the top of this comment? Well... Gow (that's the name of that bad guy), in fact, have to use those hammers to augment his earthbending skills, because otherwise he's too weak to earthbend. That isn't the first time this technique used in the series, however. We can see Aang enhancing his airbending similar way as early as Book 1 Chapter 2 - using his glider to redirect Fireball, when escaping on Appa in the end of the episode. Of course, he, being powerful Master Airbender does not compensating his weakness, unlike Gow. More of that in the comics, but that's something to check out AFTER you finish the series. 11:05 According to a shopkeeper, his group is designated to guard this village, unless he means army as concept. Plus, he's a weakling, as stated above. 11:17 You cut that line, but I know this scene by heart. Notice Ursa's wording. "Everything I've done, I've done to protect you". *DONE*. And then we find out that Azulon is dead, Ozai not going to kill Zuko anymore and, despite everything Azulon said, becomes new Fire Lord. 2+2 and we have the picture of what happened that night. Well, without a clear answer on Ursa's fate. What a brilliance of a scene. 11:24 And that Dutch Tilt on her leaving. Chef kiss visuals. 11:28 And now Zuko uses his broadswords to augment HIS Firebending. 11:31 Maybe he had. but that doesn't matter, because remember what his mother said just in the flashback before it? "No matter how things may seem to change, never forget who you are". And he's... well, he stated it here. 11:50 I mean, he DID ask... Twice even, depending on how you count. 11:57 Welcome to Ungrateful Mob trope. 12:52 Theory breaks on the note above about her wording in that last scene she appeared. 13:05 And some more classic "Ride Into Sunset". Beautiful shot to finish a beautiful episode. 13:53 True, he could go as far as claim to be a deserter, but the main reason he even revealed himself as a firebender there was "Strong Identity" shenanigans. He can still go into hiding it later, if he would really need to, but right here... I think he kinda had to, even if it is sabotaging himself on greater scheme. 13:57 Yup. It's still one hundred years of war going on right there and take the real life - in my country some people still have prejudices against German people, because of 1941-1945 thing. Hell, even French have some on their heads for Napoleon's time! Don't even let me start on USA, where there's no even war in the same sense. But people are dumb, and mob is even dumber. 14:27 Will play a little bit of Devils Advocate here, but he wasn't specifically attack Kioshi island. In fact, no shots were fired upon arrival, and even after his demands wasn't fulfilled, he only ordered to search for him, not to burn a village. All the harm there was either straight counter-attack on Kyoshi warriors themselves or (in case of buildings), collateral damage BECAUSE they were attacked. Rightfully so, but still. 15:42 The answer for this question whether it is explained can be considered by some as minor spoiler (or major with poor explanation). Funny, I was just thinking about your "Reaction to ATLA" series two minutes before I got notification. Was planning on checking the channel for the case of not having a bell or something. T is for Timing, I guess :D

There's a theory that being born with exceptional talent is actually a curse. Not only are expectations set high super early, but you also don't get the benefit of being humbled by failure. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, in a setting like the fire nation being born to a tyrannical family line- okay yeah I can see a monster like Azula being born/groomed.

Yea there’s definitely some truth to that I‘d say. The expectations can overwhelm someone especially a child. And thus mental problems follow… happens in our world all the time when parents push their kids to far

Regarding Zuko's Mom it isn't 100% explained in the show itself what happened to her, although through context later on it becomes somewhat clearer. For now one can say that yes, it is implied she did in fact save Zuko's life in some way and that Zuko doesn't know what happened to her since that moment in the flashback

Giving Azula the knife is what she wanted, but not what she needed. She doesn’t need the knife like Zuko does. If Iroh had given Azula the knife, then that would be a disaster just waiting to happen.
