AVATAR : THE LAST AIRBENDER 2X07 "ZUKO ALONE" REACTION

Ойын-сауық

MY PATREON (FULL REACTION PART, TWO WEEKS SOONER, NO ADDS) : / laurareactions
Hello !
Me during the intro : Ok, so fair warning, I'm tired today so I'm gonna be more emotional than usual, and less diplomat than usual. The episode begins : "Wait, only zuko ? trying to convince myself I can handle it". First flashback, with his mother : "I CAN handle it, yes yes." The episode continues, I'm crying, I'm falling. After the episode : 1min break and I explode, I'm crying for good and I'm like "Azula, I hate you, I'm not gonna insult you because I'm polite but… oh, fu** you !". More emotional and less diplomat, I said.
I loved this episode only about Zuko and we learnt so many things. That's why I put the full reaction part on patreon, because I reacted a lot. Because it's Zuko, because even if he's doing the right thing, people are hurting him and are rejecting him. It's making me so sad.
I'm still french, so I'm still sorry if my english hurts you.

Ursa's parting words to Zuko "Never forget who you are.."; Zuko misinterpreted and thought she meant his lineage. But Ursa wanted his son to remain a tenacious person who always tries his best, even when things are tough.

This is such an emotional episode! I love that the title refers to Zuko traveling without Iroh, but it also refers to the position he was in after his dad became firelord. Alone with just Azula and Ozai who both didn't care about him. Ugh definitely apart of my top 10, but if you can imagine, it gets even better from here 🙌🏾

Hello to both of you ! Jess, you're right, I didn't see it clearly like that but I understood that by leaving like that, Zuko's mother left him in a really bad situation, with two people who hurt him a lot, so he would be all alone. Maybe I thought also that, because of what happened during the first flashback with Zuko, his "fight" with his dad, with Iroh being present, I had hope that the two of them would be reunited soon enough. Sammy : SPOILER YES. I. HAD. TO. MAKE. A. BREAK. TO. CRY. That's it, you're warned.

The thing with the Royal FIre family dynamic is, Ozai closely trained and raised Azula because she showed a lot of potential as a bender because she was a prodigy. Azula learned her bad mannerisms from her father and the pressure of being perfect and maintaining her fathers attention and love turned her into the person she has been most of her life. and neglected Zuko. Whereas Zuko was nurtured by his mother and learned to be kind and strong like her but neglected Azula since Zuko needed more attention due to Ozai neglecting him. Each child felt unloved by the opposite parent. Think about this when as you watch til the very end of the show.

I always love how they offer him food, he declines, and the mothers immediate response is "we could use some help around the house," and that gets Zuko to stay. No "do this for that," or trade. Just her realizing he wont just accept the kindness for nothing, and offering the work as a way to convince him to stay. Also love how much this is a blend of old samurai and western films, in all the brst ways.

Very subtle and well done quiet storytelling in this episode. Ozai was cruel and manipulative, but his wife was kind and compassionate. There was no parenting and only disapproval from Ozai, but Zuko was able to get approval from his mom and she actively redirected him when he took after his dad and sister. But the opposite is also true: Azula was getting her approval from her father, which is a haven for her when her mom would try to redirect her behavior. Zuko learned to be like his mom, Azula learned to be like her father.

What you should take away from all this is that Azula is like that with Zuko because Ozai is. She clearly follows him more than the mother (Ursa), which makes her job as a mother especially difficult. However, now that she's gone...Ozai is the only parent. But even more...Azulon...Ozai's father clearly has a bit more humanity than his son...but not enough. Azulon appears to fiercely honor family and respect...but in this horrible extreme way...but this devotion did not pass on to Ozai.

  • @LauraReactions

    @LauraReactions

Hello ! I said it later with new episodes : I think also that Azula was influenced by Ozai for treating Zuko like that, and also because she wanted to please her dad (maybe because she wants to be prove herself, because she's not the heir of the throne and all ?). But it's hard for me to be sad for her because we can see that it's pleasing her to be like that when they were kids, she's feeling joy and excitement when she's acting like that. And now, I didn't see her expressing any feeling or thought which made me think that she regrets, I didn't see her explaining what I wrote here in her own way (I'm almost at the end of the season 2).

At the core of Atla, we find one very disfunctional family, with a strong drive and a passed down obsession towards power and madness. And on the other side, we find the making of one's own family through the eyes of Aang. Zuko and Aang truly are two sides of a single coin. Chained by fate and marked by their past in different but similar ways, and both having to struggle to find their own path. And both will need to grow past what is expected of them, to truly become the 'them' they need to be for themselves. It's great to see you so invested in the characters. You are going to get your mind rocked in future episodes. No spoilers. .

Knowing what the inscription of the knife says makes the shot in which Zuko cuts off his hair in the first episode of season 2 even more fitting. He is hesitating while the camera shows the inscription "never give up without a fight", wondering if he should give up his hope of returning to the fire nation. And as we see in this episode, he still doesn't want to give up. Iroh on the other hand seems to have no problem with giving up without a fight after his son died. He gave up the siege of Ba Sing Se, he didn't fight his brother for the throne after Ozai stole it, he gives up his place at court to follow Zuko into banishment, and he has no problem giving up his place in the Fire Nation and becoming exile. And things seem to be working out better for him than for Zuko. Perhaps there is wisdom in giving up.

he is the son of ozai tho...he has to accept that and own it. Thats his whole character arc really, a powerful firebending royal who wants peace and not war rightfully earning their place on the throne. Zuko is the son of Ozai and him accepting that in a positive way is essential to the story.

I don't think it would be a spoiler talking about why Ozai was arguing with his father about the succession to the throne now that Uncle Iroh's son had died. The mantle passes inherited to the first-born son and therefore to his children, being Uncle Iroh the eldest, he was in line for the throne but without children whoever inherited it could not take his place as Lord of Fire, that's when Ozai enters. He demands his father and his father quickly realizes what Ozai wants is the throne, and the power that comes with being Lord of Fire and the opportunity that opens up to him now that Iroh is not in line for the throne. What about Zuko's mom? I can say that you will discover it later in the episodes that you have yet to see, and I will follow your reactions to see if you discover it, although if you analyze well how worried her mother looks in this episode you can imagine a little what could have happened with her. This is one of many good episodes that this anime has. Within this entire anime, I think that the character that had the best development was Zuko, and I believe that you will reach the same conclusion when you finish this anime. BTW, I love your video reactions and when I found out that you were reacting to this anime, I was excited and in five days I reached your reactions until this episode. Continue enjoying this incredible universe of Avatar The Last Airbender

Hello, thank you and welcome on board 😊 For Ozai, I understood what you said and this logic is... Well, logic in fact. The fact that he's using the death of his brother's son as a reason to take him the throne is awful, but the fact that he's using his own kids (and we saw how he was treating them) is so wrong. For Zuko's mom, did you hear my theory in the review ? I think (don't tell me if I'm right, no spoilers please 😊) that there is a story around Zuko's birth here : maybe he's not Ozai's blood son, which could be a cruel reason for him to treat his son like that, to not want him as his true heir ; which would explain why his mother was so protective but also why she ran away, like now that Ozai's son was dead and maybe can't protect her anymore, she was feeling too threatened herself. I don't know, that's just a theory, but for now it's the only one I found which is "checking the boxes" imo. I will see that when these two will meet again maybe 😊🙈

@@LauraReactions Ozai really won't win the best father award, that's guaranteed just by watching this episode. In this look at Zuko's past, we notice how much love Ozai spills for his children, as I said, Ozai was already moved by the desire to possess power and what a greater opportunity than to become Lord of Fire. And yes, I did listen to your theory, very good by the way and just to not give you any spoilers that may or may not be possible about your theory, but I would like you to be open to other possibilities. You'll see when you continue with the next episodes. I think if you watch the episode again, maybe you can see more and hit something different too, hahaha everything is possible ;) I don't know, the writers in this season for each character are leaving clues to complete the puzzle of this new adventure that is for the Earth kingdom. Keep enjoying, and we will enjoy your reactions :)

Azula wouldn’t be so happy if Azulon had ordered Ozai to kill her for his punishment. And Ozai, too because he can see the potential in her. Ozai never liked Zuko because he doesn’t have the personality and the abilities that Ozai wanted him to have, so he neglected and later thrown him out so Azula could be his heir, at least that is my theory. Azula does have both, which means Ozai is closer to her. I don’t blame Iroh for his gifts because do you expect him to take a stroll in a city that he was trying to take for gifts Azula and Zuko may like. They were war souvenirs. Zuko needs the knife because his world is full of threats both visible and hidden. It keeps him safe in the tactile sphere. Azula may want the knife, but she’s a firebending prodigy and she knows it. She as hell doesn’t need it. Yes, let’s give a cruel child more weapons, because that makes absolute sense. She’s perfectly capable of defending herself unlike Zuko. What she needs is to know that she doesn’t have to be constantly defending herself. That not everyone is Ozai. A doll is a friend who loves you and provides a feeling of security and comfort. It seems like Zuko didn’t have any friends of his own like Azula as horrible as she is to Mai and Ty Lee. Ursa did the best she could in that situation of being married to a man like Ozai. He’s too prideful to ask a piece of their food, which I think they may have let them, since he’s gaunt. Also, Sela knows that he’s too prideful.

Hello ! Azula was awful during this episode and yes, Ozai prefers her also because he can see her potential, that she's cold and rough like he is. Or maybe like he wants her to be because she's doing all of that to prove herself to him, her dad and lord king ? Difficult to tell for me right now. For Iroh's souvenirs, I don't blame him neither, even if I didn't think of them like you did. And for Ursa, I don't know what to think because for where I am in my bingewatching, I don't have my answer about my theory of Zuko not being Ozai's real son and this response would make my thoughts evolve about how his mom acted here (because she was feeling threatened that much, because her stepfather couldn't protect her ? a theory) : no matter what, it had to be nightmare to be marrie to a man like Ozai.

(English version : Hello ! You are right about Azula: she was educated by Ozai to be like that, to be so tough, and to see her own father treating Zuko that way, surely pushed her to do the same, by mimicry but also to please him. But I find it hard to see her as a victim because so far (I'm almost at the end of this season 2), at no point have I seen her express a feeling or a thought that would show that she has regrets, that she feels bad to be like that etc.)

Ozai's father, Fire Lord Azulon, wanted to punish him by forcing him to kill his own son, Zuko. Ozai was prepared to do it. After Zuko's Mother Ursa learned about this by questioning Azula, she proposed to Ozai that she would kill Azulon to save Zuko. Ozai agreed, but demanded that afterwards she'd go into exile. So, Ursa killed Azulon to save her son's life and Ozai became Fire Lord. Iroh wasn't really interested in the throne anymore after he'd lost his son Lu Ten, so he didn't object. Instead, after Zuko was exiled, he joined him as a mentor. As he said in episode 19 of Season 1, "I'm sorry. I just nag you because, well, since I lost my son [...] I think of you as my own."
