Certain fire benders can also use lightning but it is fairly rare. All lightning benders are fire benders but not all firebenders can lightning bend. Its the same thing with waterbenders and healing. Not all water benders can heal like Katara. You'll see more examples of specialty bending like this as you go along in the show. Hope this helps.

just to retell some details on the episode; zuko's grandfather was getting angry at zuko's father for even suggesting that he became firelord instead of his brother. he was about to suggest a punishment and azula heard what it was, if one was mentioned. azula said that it was to kill zuko. mom talked with azula, and then later that night, woke zuko to say goodbye and say she protected him and then left without anyone knowing where, and on the same night, the grandfather passed away and apparently changed his mind/his last will was to have zuko's father as the firelord instead. come to any conclusions you want about it, the story telling in this episode was really nice

Yeah the ending isn’t true I’ll spoil it because they never do mention it in the show but he didn’t change his mind zuko’s mom ran away for the treason she committed for helping ozai kill his father so ozai can rise to power but zuko’s mom would be banished by her own husband to keep secret of what happened

It breaks my heart to see the kid say "I hate you" to Zuko, but it's totally understandable that he had that reaction

This is my favourite episode in the entire show. The amount of layers and depth in this episode is to a level you can't even imagine. Every time you rewatch this episode you'll find something new. Also we see Zuko at his lowest point in this episode and for the first time we see him look at the world from the other nations point of view. You can see the timing of the flashbacks with each scene how they can relate to each situation he's in. This episode is a masterpiece.

azula is the way she is bc ozai had more influence in her since their childhood bc she was a prodigy while zuko was a “disappointment”, and ursa showed more affection towards zuko rather than azula so she only was influenced by her father

I feel like a lot of people kinda disregard Azula’s genetic/natural disposition towards being terrible tho. Sure she had bad experiences/influences, but little tells like her implied animal abuse with the turtleducks paint a pretty clear picture that Azula was just... not right from the jump 💀

@@laurahyvonen7063 I see what you’re saying, but how far do we extend this ya know? Is Azulon’s favoritism towards Iroh responsible for Ozai turning out the way he did? Was Sozin’s parental failing responsible for how Azulon turned out and ran later ran the fire nation ineffectively?

@@rdeal8912 in all honesty, yes, in my opinion bc if a parent is abusive mentally/physically etc then it’s pretty obvious that the child will turnout the same. and im noe excusing their actions, just stating a fact

@@laurahyvonen7063 I see what you mean and I appreciate what you said at the end there about not excusing her behavior. A lot of the fan base does try and argue that Azula is deserving/in need of a complete 180 character redemption arc by pointing out things like her past

if you want to know more about ursa’s and ozai’s storyline, i suggest you read the comics after watching this series bc they explain it

The comics are horrible

Zuko's mom loved zuko Ozai loves azula only for her prodigy.

A neat, small detail about fire and lighting that you might not know - both are forms of plasma, being the 4th state of matter (gas, liquid and solid being the other 3). So, though rare and hard for a bender to achieve, it makes sense that a fire bender has the potential to bend lightning ..and as I write this I just realised that all the other elements correspond to different states of matter. Gas being air bending. Liquid as water bending and solid as earth bending!

Congrats on 2k subscribers!!!! Also this episode introduces my favorite animal in the whole show… turtle ducks

This episode reveals a lot about not just Zuko, but the entire royal family and the way it operates. You get to see that Ozai is a cunning narcissistic manipulator. Which is, pretty much exactly what Azula is. You see that Ursa is very caring and truly a great mother to Zuko, this clearly shows in Zukos character, but as you see, Ursa isnt exactly great to Azula. Theres so much to digest in this episode. Also, not usually the type to make comments like this, but girl on the right (I know your name but have no idea how to spell it), I really dig the hair and top/necklace youre wearing here. Its a good look. Below this point will be a minor minor spoiler for The Search, though you guys are late enough in the series that it may not be a true spoiler, just dont read in until the finale or if you plan on reading the comics, also domt read on. which is a comic I'm not sure you guys will be reading, but also spoils some minor stuff for the show as well Ursa isnt a good mom. Shes potrayed as if she is, but this is all Zukos perspective. She chooses to forget her own children. Literally.

There are some comics that answer some of your questions if you wanna look into them after you finish the show

My theory was that after the mother heard what happened with fire lord Azulon she confronted Ozai. He wanted to be Firelord and she wanted to protect Zuko so she was the one who assasinated the grandfather in order to protect Zuko. To protect her prince Ozai covered it up by assuming the throne of Fire Lord and making the mother go into exile away from the fire nation so that he wouldn’t have to prosecute her I guess. That’s the only reason I could guess she would leave and Ozai would keep it secret from Zuko when he asked.

Spoiler from the comics. Read on for own risk. Do you really wanna know? Ok then. Even from the start, Ozai never believed Zuko was his son, instead he thought he was from the ex of his wife. Ursa (Zuko's mom) in exchange for the life of her son, teached to Ozai an untraceable poison. But demanded she leave the palace fearing that he would some day be victim of the same poison. Then, probably he falsified a testament making him the new fire lord. And the rest is known...

The dynamic between Zuko's parents is more complicated than it seems. Many people miss the fact that the murder of Azulon was his mother's plan. She is ruthless too, but also compassionate. She is just ruthless in protecting her kids (like the turtleduck!).
