I thought she had negotiated to sacrifice herself instead of her son. Then the dad killed his father out of rage. But yeah her killing the fire lord makes more sense. Spoiler: We never see her again in the show right? But she should still be alive then. Would've been nice to see her by Zuko's side when he becomes the fire lord. “Azula always lies” is a mantra Zuko has been telling himself almost his entire life, but the truth is that she doesn’t outright lie most of the time. Zuko tells himself that because Azula “deceives” him. It doesn’t matter what she says, because it’s always for a reason, and she usually gets what she wants if you’re not careful. Keep in mind that everyone has mentors! While Zuko got Ursa and Iroh, Azula got Ozai.

Yes that’s the thing about Azula - she’s extremely manipulative and a great liar, but she’s not a pathological liar. If the truth will get her what she wants (in this case, tormenting Zuko), then she’ll tell the truth.

I dont think Ozai has been a mentor to her for a long time. I think she frightens him, though not as much as Zuko does. Having killed his own father Ozai cannot escape the fear of likewise being killed by his own children that's probably part of why he completly overreacts when Zuko shows even a hint of backbone.

It's no wonder why Zuko is so conflicted and confused. How does a person with any level of morality survive growing up in a society in general, and family specifically, that completely lacks morals? The Fire Nation is very concerned with honor and duty. But, they use that to do whatever they want under the guise of something traditional and admiral. Zuko wears so many masks to protect him and exist in a world of crazy he no longer knows what he is. I personally think Azulon loved Iroh and his grandson Lu Ten. Well, as much as he is able to love anyone. He knows how messed up Ozai is. He knows how messed up Azula is. I don't think he had any intentions of Ozai, or is offspring, to ever rule. Perhaps he was thinking ordering Zuko's death would cause the family to implode. And, then he'd clean up the pieces. But, he didn't know how ruthless they were, and how protective Zuko's mother would be.

@@scottcarroll7782I don't believe Iroh was ever ruthless. I imagine that even after conquering a city, he would show the citizens and prisoners of war respect and honor. It wasn't until he had a close personal loss, his son, that he suddenly understood firsthand the pain he was causing others. So he was disillusioned with the war. Then shortly after, his father was murdered, his sister in law disappeared, and his younger brother took Iroh's rightful throne. After that, I imagine he lost any sympathy he had left for the ruling class of the Fire Nation and became who we know him as now

Just occurred to me while watching this reaction: the soldiers telling the family how the Fire Nation was handling the prisoners almost exactly mirrors what the General wanted to do in the war room in The Storm flashback, it’s probably incredibly hard for Zuko to hear that again and know his banishment/burn was for nothing, that a family he’s grown fond of is being subject to almost the exact thing he tried to stop. Unnecessary slaughter, and for what? There’s a reason this episode is a long-time fan favorite.

Stylistically this episode owes a lot to classic Westerns and samurai movies. There are a lot of similarities between Zuko's situation and the movie "Shane" (1953), in which a weary stranger ashamed of his gunfighting past tries to make a peaceful life in a new town, working for a kind family with a young boy who comes to idolize him. Eventually he's forced to use violence against some local villains, and realizes he has to move on. It's very sad, but brilliant.

Love to see Ariana getting fired up about Azula's depravity; super enjoyable to hear your thoughts on such an interesting (and awful) character. Something I find interesting in this episode is how Zuko is his mother's favourite, while Azula is her father's. Those lines were set while they were just children. Imagine being either of them and knowing that your other parent has already given up on you? This is the effect that disfunctional couples have on their children (though Ozai being the actual devil definitely makes things worse). One of the GOAT episodes, thanks for letting me re-live it 🙏

Late to the party but psychologist here! I've always lived Avatar and have always said that is a feast for any psychologists watching because there is so much to unpack, the writers did a outstading job in acknowledging many different aspects of psychology in this show, but doing in a subtle way that doesn't make the narrative too dark and depressive (it's a kids show after all!). I love recommending this show to patients because a lot of the central themes are related to trauma. Most of the central characters is this show carry deep scars of trauma and many of their narratives is them learning how to elaborate what happened to them. Like Aang being the only survivor of his people's genocide, Sokka and Katara being victims of war crimes, invasions and loosing their mother in a horrific way, Zuko being a survivor of many different kinds of abuse by the hands of his own family... And so goes on. A lot of people talk about Azula and her "psychopath" tendencies (I don't really like how pop culture normalized and emptied the meaning of the world psychopath btw). The truth is that many of Azula's behaviours do fit the criteria for Antisocial Personality Disorder, but the thing is, we never diagnose any personality disorder on someone who is younger than 18 years old. Because the personality hasn't fully developed yet. Another very important factor here is the fact that Azula also had a terrible and traumatic upbringing. Ozai is clearly ruthless to his children and Azula way of surving was being the most perfect daughter and mirroring her father's behaviour to fit in. And we know from the show that Ursa never showed her the same love she had for Zuko, because Ursa herself also was a victim of an arranged marriage to an awful, cruel man. Azula didn't have the "buffer" and guiding hand that Ursa and Iroh were to Zuko. And needless to say, growing up without a mother's love and approval can have devastating consequences to an individual's mental health. And we see this in the series finale when Azula finally reaches everything she wanted: She becomes Firelord, everyone fears and respects her. But she still doesn't have her mother's love. Her only friends "betrayed" her. So her mind completely crumbles. It's really really sad to be honest, because she might have done horrible things but deep down she is also a victim.

There's a popular theory that Azula either misunderstood or is deliberately misrepresenting what Azulon said, and the actual command was to give Zuko up to be Iroh's heir. It certainly makes for a more poetic punishment and solves the inheritance issue.

Azula is deeply messed up, but I truly do believe she told Zuko about Azulon's order "for his own good." Azula could have kept quiet and watched it all play out (like she does later as an even more messed-up preteen in The Storm). Instead, she tells Zuko and even proposes a very child-like sort of escape plan (run away and get different grown-ups) with a side of political awareness (nowhere in the Fire Nation will be safe, get out of the country). She just does it with all her usual cruelty, because there's no way Zuko would believe her if she tried to be earnest.

Keep in mind that even the man who suggested he would kill his own grandchild was appalled at Ozai's behaviour. That's how twisted Ozai is. And Azula is even more twisted.

_And Azula is even more twisted._ That's debatable. Remember that Ozai (and probably, to a lesser extent, Azulon) taught her everything she knows about "family values". We don't see as much about Ozai's family life, but he's also proven to be just as ruthless in battle as his daughter.

I think you saw it first as a kid and didn’t see it the first so just don’t see it each time. But shows where you discover something new each time are so awesome.

Ursa doesn't have bad taste in men. They don't go into this, since it's a kid show, so sometimes it's not obvious with the more dark things. Ursa didn't choose Ozai. He's the king. This isn't like our world, today. The King makes choices, the rest obey, or face punishment. Ursa is just a good person trying her best in a situation she had very little agency in.

I'm not quite sure why this is what sticks out to me the most about the commentary but at the very beginning Maple brings up saving your food and water if you're lost in the desert. That's true to an extent if you think you'll be out there for a long time, but so many people die of dehydration while they still have plenty of water left because they think to themselves "I'll save it for later." Always make sure you stay hydrated above all else. In the heat you'll die before you realize you're dying if you don't. That's my hiking tip for the day.

Ozai and Ursa (mom) had a deal where she would poison Azulon (Ozai's dad) and Zuko's life would be spared, because she agreed she was banished, Zuko lived, Ozai got throne and Ursa succeed and Azula got her father to throne (other words, everybody was ""happy"") that is what happened, Ursa never died, Zuko and Azula found her after the show

I think (mind you, I was a psych major, but I'm not fully finished with that yet) for my part, I'd agree with antisocial personality disorder. Even more specifically, I think I'd say she's dealing with Machiavellian personality. Someone with a Machiavellian personality often views other people “as objects to be manipulated in pursuit of his or her goals,”, they are most often cold, cunning, calculating, and deceptive.

This episode is interesting. A lot of people naturally lean in towards focusing on how crazy Azula is but I do think the broader look is jsut how divided and disconnected all of them are as a family. Ozai shows Zuko no love, and we focus on that. But not many focus on Ursa showing Azula no love either, even saying something as crazy as "what is wrong with that child?" as her own mother. No understanding, no compassion. If Azula was left with only Ozai to recognize her like Zuko was left with only Ursa, it is no wonder why Azula is the way she is. We can't know how the past was, but perhaps if Ursa had reached out more to Azula she wouldn't have been the child nor the teenager we see her in the show. Another thing of interest is to show how Iroh was also no better really. Perhaps his time at war meant he didn't understand his nephew and niece well, but his choice of gifts are interesting and show his disconnection with them. He gives Zuko a Pearl Dagger, likely because he is a boy and weapons are a symbol of masculinity. He also gives Azula a doll, which she is disgusted by. Her reaction was certainly wrong especially burning the doll, but clearly Iroh likely only gave a doll to her because she was a girl. He failed to understand anything about her. I couldn't say what gift she would have liked but I do feel the scene exposes the fact that Azula is the way she is because her family failed to understand her the same way that Ozai failed to understand Zuko and therefore rejecting him. While its easy to focus on Azula being evil and crazy, because she is, its important to remember that no one is born that way really, and while one maybe could argue Azula could have anti social disorder (which by the way its important to recognize that not everyone with ASD is a bad person), people are heavily influenced by social elements too, namely how they grow up. If Ursa and Iroh did not embrace Azula in the same way Ozai did, then its really no wonder why she is the way she is. Overall for people who have watched the whole series, Azula's story is a tragedy from her childhood to her rise in power to her downfall.
