    So many subtle details here. Like when Zuko stops for food and feed, the guy says he can make it two bags of feed cause he can tell he's hungry. And when the father goes away to "fetch" his son from the frontlines, he's talking about his body.

    I love reactions to this episode because there are so many things that happen, it’s ridiculous. Yours definitely didn’t disappoint! Some things to point out: - We see how Uncle Iroh used to be when he’s writing the letter, what I refer to as General Iroh. As much as we love him in the present day timeline for being so wise and uplifting, he was also ruthless and bloodthirsty like the rest of his family, giddily laughing at the thought of burning Ba Sing Se to the ground. Ursa, Azula, and Zuko all even laugh at his letter. People forget this but it’s important to remember that Uncle Iroh has *not* always been a good person. It took losing his son in a war that he helped fight in for him to self-reflect and change his ways. - When younger Azula was taunting Zuko about their dad planning on killing him, she mentioned an earth kingdom family adopting him. In a way, that’s what happened in the present day. A kind earth kingdom family offered him food and shelter for helping them out. - We learn that Zuko took after his mother Ursa while Azula took after her father Ozai. The main reason why Azula and Zuko are so different and combative is heavily due to their parents favoring one child more than the other. I don’t think that their parents explicitly intended that, but it’s the end result. It’s just unfortunate that Zuko and Azula were brought up in a dysfunctional environment to constantly compete for affection and approval. - To understand what happened to Ursa, Zuko and Azula’s mom, I highly suggest rewatching this episode, starting from where the flashback begins with younger Zuko with his mom feeding the turtleducks. They subtly explain what happens as the episode progresses. - There’s one really brief moment where it shows Zuko and Azula happily playing outside like regular little kids. It’s a short shot but I cherish the idea that though Ozai was trying to mold them into child soldiers with perfecting their firebending, they still had some semblance of being a kid and enjoying the company of one another. - While it is frustrating to see the village turn on Zuko at the end, it’s understandable and realistic. The war has been going on for *100 years.* It’s not just the family’s son who went off in the war. How many other people in that village lost someone in the war? How much death, devastation, fear, and turmoil have they endured? One person acting heroic doesn’t erase all that prejudice, especially not someone in the fire nation, and especially not the *son of the Firelord* who is leading the war. They don’t know Zuko enough to say that he’s different than his dad, and proclaiming how he’s the heir to the throne didn’t help him whatsoever, so the villagers would rather deal with the bullies they know than the ones they don’t. Zuko’s mother’s words about “remembering who he is” was to remind him that he’s a fighter who perseveres, but Zuko misinterpreted it to be remember his birthright and lineage, which probably wasn’t what she was implying. If you couldn’t tell, this is a *large fan favorite* in the series. It expands upon what we learn about the fire nation royal family from what we’ve seen in The Storm and we get so much Zuko character development. Glad to see you really enjoyed it!

    Zuko travels on the ostrich horse he stole from Song and her family at the end of "The Cave of Two Lovers". Zuko's dagger was first seen in "The Avatar State" when Zuko and Iroh cut off their topknots. Zuko's mother, Ursa, is seen for the first time. The pregnant woman and her husband, whom Zuko decides not to rob, would later be escorted to Ba Sing Se by Aang and friends in "The Serpent's Pass". Zuko is shown fighting without using his firebending for the second time, the first time being in "The Blue Spirit".

    This episode is perfection. For Zuko's character of course and the style. But for me how it also continues showing the wages of empire. Love how y'all keep referencing Song from episode 2 because that is precisely the emotional connection we are supposed to make again. Zuko can feel empathy and now even act on it, BUT none of that changes the war against the Earth Kingdom, breaking these people's lives. "Everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked."

    Even that the dagger was originally from the Earth Kingdom - Zuko's gifting it to the kid was perfect, and it was like it was being restored to where it belonged ("Made in Earth Kingdom"). But when Zuko revealed who he was, the restoration could not happen.

  • @grownmannn2
    @grownmannn22 жыл бұрын

    Trivia When Zuko beats the earthbender and reveals his identity, a man in the crowd shouted that Zuko's own father burned him. However, in "The Storm", it was implied that this fact was not publicly known, as Zuko's own crew, who had been traveling with him for nearly three years, was under the assumption that he got his scar in a training accident. "Avatar Extras" stated that this episode is the series' equivalent of a Western, being similar in many ways to the 1949 novel, Shane. The doll given to Azula has the same hairstyle and headband as Toph. Ursa states that Zuko is "someone who keeps fighting, even though it's hard". That same message is meant by the inscription on the dagger Iroh sent him. Zuko heeded these words carefully, as he mentioned to Aang in "The Siege of the North, Part 2", "I've always had to struggle and fight and that's made me strong. It's made me who I am." This is the only episode in which Zuko uses his swords to augment his firebending. Azula's game of shooting an apple off of another's head with firebending is similar to the marksmanship feat known as the apple-shot, most famously performed by William Tell. The fact that the dagger says "Made in Earth Kingdom" is a nod to how most modern day products have "Made in China" somewhere on them as the Earth Kingdom is largely based on China. "Korra Alone", an episode of The Legend of Korra, was named after this episode. The title of the graphic novel Suki, Alone is also reminiscent of this episode. At the pond, Ursa explains to young Zuko, "If you mess with [a mother's] babies, they're going to bite you back." This foreshadows the "vicious, treasonous things" she does to save Zuko's life, as is later learned in "The Day of Black Sun, Part 2: The Eclipse". Before "The Awakening", this episode provided the closest and clearest glimpse of Fire Lord Ozai's face, with his mouth shown when he spoke, albeit at a distance and barely visible. This episode's title "Zuko Alone" references that Zuko is the only major character appearing in it, except for flashbacks. This is the only episode in the entire franchise in which Team Avatar does not appear. The field of large earth coins that Zuko passes through is the same as that in which Avatar Wan lost his life millennia prior.

    It’s not even Bragging about his name. It’s Zuko proclaiming who he really is. No front. No hiding. Just Truth regardless of the consequences. We’re not given a choice of who we’re born to, it’s what we decide to do with it. He’s a G for sure. The mom aspect is not forgotten in the future episodes. I’ll just say that. So...if the father SUPPORTS one child and SHUNS the other....what can we maybe think happened with each child instead of just writing it off as "evil" or "chemical imbalance". Maybe child A who is....still a developing human, mind...interprets all the praise and encouragement as 'good and right'...and so keeps doing it. Also, since the other parent scolds child A, maybe they will cling to the parent that praises them? And follow THEIR example? Now, child B, who is also developing and trying to win the approval of both parents, is SHUNNED by one parent and encouraged by the other....but in the inverse way as the other child. Wouldn't it make sense then that child B clings to one parent, imprinting on them and learning their lessons, despite their attempts to please the other parent. So, child A ends up closer to one parent, while child B ends up closer to the other? Seems pretty legit to me. And, also, if you guys have any friends with children of their own....pay attention to how they act or what they say. I can't count how many times I've heard young siblings say horrible shit without batting an eye...even wishing their sibling would die. They don't get it. They're KIDS. Death is something you don't really get when....you're EIGHT! Of course, the best case for my argument is right in the kid that Zuko saves....Lee. He does as his parents do...and tries to understand the world as black and white. Despite everything Zuko did, all the bonding they shared, he follows his mother and his parents' example...and just instantly hates Zuko without understanding why or the nuance behind it. That's because he's a like eight or nine.

    A lot of that statement is very true the only thing is Azula doesn’t seem to have changed as she’s gotten older so hopefully someone or something will happen to her character arc so she doesn’t turn out to be evil because at a certain point when you become an adult you can make your own decisions not that she is one now but she is close to it in our opinion. All I will say is Ozai definitely had more influence over Azula than Ursa did while growing up… remember though, she’s STILL growing up. She’s only a 14 yr old CHILD and she acts and behaves just like her father, and we see her like that even at around age 7/8. just something to keep in mind

    Very true she still a young teenager. Hopefully someone or something will happen where she will change a new leaf be cause at a certain age you have to know right from wrong ,but we agree on that. The real evil is Ozai and we aren’t giving him any excuses at this point he should know what’s wrong and right, obviously there’s grey areas but he’s so far off it, it’s not even close in our opinion.
