Zoom H1N Audio TEST | Records High Quality SOUND! (Outdoor and Indoor)
Ғылым және технология
An audio test of the Zoom H1N Handy Recorder! The Zoom H1N records super high quality sound both indoors and outdoors!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT:
The Zoom H1N is a small affordable sound recorder that was released in March of 2010. However, that was the old model, in this video we test the newer 2018 model. This sound recorder features an XY stereo microphone which allows you to capture two tracks of high-resolution audio. Honestly, I don’t think recording audio could be any easier.
In this video we will test the audio with things like white noise, traffic, nature sounds, using it as a hand-held microphone, and much more. We will also do different categorized tests such as an audio test, a gain test, and a test of most of the Zoom H1N’s functions.
This sound recorder is incredible and captures very high quality sound. Whether you're indoors or outdoors it should capture excellent audio.
If you'd like to see a more in depth view of what this video covers see the list below.
1. I start this video with a short introduction from inside my car. I quickly talk about who I am and that this video is an audio test of the Zoom H1N handy sound recorder.
2. Next, we move onto the actual testing part of the video. In this section we will test different audio scenarios. Things such as white noise, traffic, nature sounds, and using it as a hand-held microphone. So this category of the tests is labeled AUDIO TEST.
3. After that section, we begin testing different levels of gain in a variety of situations as well. More specifically we will do a noise/audio grain test and a distance test. The noise/audio grain test will show how this mic deals with noise/audio grain. The distance test, on the other hand, will show how far away this microphone can pick up audio.
4. The final test we run for the Zoom H1N is the functions test. This will show off the various functions of this sound recorder. Just to list a few, the Zoom H1N has a lo-cut filter, a limiter, a test tone, a slate tone, and a voice emphasis filter. AND THAT’S ONLY A FEW!
5. After the final test, I conclude this video in my car. I do a quick recap of everything we covered in this video and give my final opinion on how the tests went.

Hi Jake! Thanks for doing this. Such a great review. I’m looking to buy this and I’m so happy someone made a recent review and breakdown. I mostly shoot inside the house. I own a Rode micro and I made it work for few months but now it has a very bad background noise. Nothing more upsetting when you find this out during post production. I also own a Yeti but it’s a pain to use because I have to plug it in the laptop and camera just to make it work. I have to set up cart and all which is so much hustle. This video helped me finalized my decision. I’m also looking to buy the APH-1N. Is the wind screen functions the same way as dead cat? Thanks again! Btw, I love your camera settings too and the way you break down things. Keep it up!
@JakeBorowski15
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! I'm very happy to help! I've gone through the same thing with the background noise issue and then noticing it in post. It's the WORST. The windscreen will help to block out some wind noise, however, I think the dead cat works much better because there's more surface area for the wind to grab onto. Although I've never used the wind screen this is just what I THINK would happen. I just know that the dead cat works really well for me in windy situations. Also, if you are thinking about getting the Zoom H1N I believe there's a link in the description of my KZread video. I hope that helps and thanks again for the comment!
That test with Lo-cut filter: 160Hz was very good, I decided to go with a cheap recorder and use the rode mic I already have for now, but this recorder is great

Love the video! Very informative. Just a question, what settings would u recommend for recording voice audio inside a car that's turned on (for the ac lol) but not moving anywhere.
@JakeBorowski15
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the comment! If you're in the car with it on I'd say set the lo-cut filter to 80hz. That will cut out some of the car noise but your voice should still be heard pretty well. Other than that just set the gain to a setting where the mic doesn't peak and you should be good to go. Normally I set mine right around 6 or 7 for the gain. Hope that helps!
I think I want to strap this to my camera and avoid dealing with in-camera pre-amp problems. Well done with the outdoor tests

Thanks man appreciate it! I'd say just set it to a lower gain and that's about it. The only other setting I might change would be the lo-cut filter. I'd possibly set it to 80hz but that's something you'd have to test out. That lo-cut filter is just supposed to cut out all the lower audio. That's about it though. Hope that helps!

Thanks. Great test. I am amazed how little self noise or amp noise you get even at gain 9. Most of the noise that might need removing isn't from the recorder itself but would be unwanted background noises. It may sound strange, but I am thinking of replacing the amazing but bulky and often too sensitive Sony PCM D100 with something more pocketable like the H1N which also would pick up fewer unwanted sounds from the surroundings.

Nice video! I just bought one, looking for the accessories pack but is the foam windscreen better than a deadcat? And what is the size of the deadcat for the H1N? Thanks for share the tests 😍
@JakeBorowski15
2 жыл бұрын
Thanks appreciate the comment. So in my opinion I think the deadcat will be better because it just has more uses overall. The foam windscreen is really only good for blocking out the p noises in your audio but the deadcat will do that along with block out wind much better. As far as the size goes, there isn't really a size. All you have to do is search, "Zoom H1N Deadcat" and it should come up online. Hope that helps!

Very good video thank you for the very informative content. I have just purchased one myself, I can't seem to get the same clarity of audio as you do. I'm not sure what your audio does sound like. I watched through some of your videos on your channel but the audio seems fine there. If you are using the Zoom H1N in those videos then I don't see a problem. However I will tell you the settings I use when shooting videos. When I'm outside I make sure that I have the lo-cut filter set to the lowest setting I think it's 80 Hertz. Then I make sure my gain isn't peaking and trying to get it around -12dB. Also make sure you always use the deadcat. That just makes a huge difference to me. I also make sure that I'm recording in WAV 24bit/48kHz. After that I just make sure I adjust the gain peaks in post to hit -9dB. That's all I do for my audio. I hope that helps!

Thanks for responding and in those videos I used a very cheap shotgun mic attached to a galaxy s10, I have only just purchased the h1n to improve my audio quality and haven't used it for content yet, the settings you mentioned are exactly what I have been trying to use. Even in low sound environments like your white noise section in this video, the background static is constant even with the lowest gain. After some more testing and your clarification of settings I'm sure now that I have a faulty device, thanks again for the help!

I actually received the Zoom H1N as a gift and all the accessories I got with it came in that kit, so I'm not sure where you could find it. It doesn't even have a brand name or model name on it.
Do you by chance know the brand of the deadcat? I’m looking for one that fits and sounds decent for my h1n and I was happy with the performance shown in this vid

They discontinued that one but I've heard people like the Movo S2. I think that's what it's called
