I had a recording job way back when. Had everything, I thought. After setting all up, the last thing was to thread the tape and begin the taping. The only problem was that I forgot the tape! I had to run to the nearest store and get what ever they had! That was over 40 years ago, never forgot that again.

Not having a good system for archiving and keeping track of my recordings was another big mistake. Thankfully I fixed it, patiently went through the entirity of my recordings folder, trimmed, wrote descriptions and renamed every sound, and put it all into a sound library (in SoundQ, although I need to check out Soundly as well since it looks more developed and better overall), while also making a mirror backup of all my recordings raw and unedited. It only took about a year.. Now I diligently try to properly organize all new sounds after each recording session.

One really good advice I got from my field recordists is take a photo (with your phone) of all your sound locations. When I started it took a while to figure our that my XLR cables were inverted when recording in MS. Gladly on most of my takes I did not convert them while recording so I can switch L-R in post.

  • @FreeToUseSounds

Just literally started today. My Zoom H1N was delivered last night. I have my Immersive Soundscapes EarSight lav mics. I also bought a pair of Bubblebee Windbubbles size 4. Been trying to understand which gain level to use without too much noise, so yeah... it's a lot to learn. I realize I'm on a budget setup but I'm kinda disappointed in the noise this setup produces. Think I have to find that sweet spot. One thing though. Setting gain to 6-7 and recording ambiance in my backyard records very low volume. But if I crank it to 9-10, the noise becomes apparent. How do I handle this combo? Also, how much work is expected to be done in post production. I mean, removing noise, 100hz bass sounds and what else might end up in your recording?

Biggest mistake I've ever made was not double-checking the stability of my tripod, which resulted in my ZOOM H5 falling over and crashing straight into a pile of concrete rubble. Poor fragile XYH-5 capsule did not recover after this; even after "fixing" the broken shockmount with some glue and whatnot, after a while the microphones started giving off weird crackling noises and I had to buy a new capsule.

I need to document/record noise that is produced by an HVAC (Air Conditioner) while it is running from about 8-10 ft away. I tried to record the noise with my phone, but the recording is not clear and the recording does not sound like when you hear the noise in person. I might try using the Zoom SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun Microphone Capsule with Hairy Windscreen with it. I thought about the Rode NTG5, but that is a bit out of the budget that I want to spend. Anyway, do you have any tips to help the recording go better?

Love your channel! I've just discovered field recording and am slowly getting the gear together to start recording peaceful nature sounds. I grabbed some Usi Pros already and now need a recorder to go with them. I like the sound of the Zoom F6. It's seems like it has a very quiet noise floor and I love the idea of 32bit float - which sounds ideal for thunderstorms! Would you say the Zoom F6 is perfect for my intended type of recordings? I was looking into naming and structuring for my recordings a year ago, but couldn't find anything I was happy with, especially with not knowing how to store meta information and all. Regarding DAWs, it didn't feel like it came down to any particular DAW, as that's just preference. So thanks for mentioning UCS, I'm watching their videos, looks really promising and extensive! Looks like it's made by some sound-designers, which is exactly the level of depth I was hoping to find as a solution. I'll have to check out any of the programs (soundminer/soundly) and see how they work in combination with UCS. Ideally UCS will be a solution independent of those mentioned programs though, as soundminer costs A LOT (even more than my DAW of choice :O) and soundly is a cloud-subscription, so I never ended up trying either of those in the past. I was wondering, is UCS-system fairly new? What were you using before following that system? Thanks for this video, lots of great insights, very helpful!

  • @FreeToUseSounds

Hi! You can also use the free Soundly version to write metadata. If you like to try out the Pro Version I have you a coupon code. Just use FTUS2021 and you can ty it out for one month at no cost. Also Reaper has an integration. I just don't use Soundminer because you need a physical key lock and if you lose it, that's it. You need a new one I suppose. I also just write out the metadata and description with Pages and copy and past it in Audition. I made a video about How to write metadata. Did you find it?

Recording people is a mixed bag and varies considerably from government to government laws. It is not always illegal to record if you tell them or it is inferred, obvious. Many meetings online are recorded. They have a note at the top, joining this meeting you agree to being recorded. If you hide the microphone or conceal it this is generally illegal, or can't be used in law or in public. If you are in public and it is obvious you are recording or filming, it maybe okay. Of course check your local jurisdiction. But music is copyright don't use.
