I started with a handmade piezo pick up I used to plug in directly in my PC. I used it to primarily to record metals and house objects. My first recorder was the H2N I used for 4-5 years, until 2 of the mics started failing. I recently brought a H4N and a Rode NTG4plus. I always wanted a shotgun mic, but interestingly I don't record as much as I used to now. Hope that when the weather is nicer I'll get the chance to make some broader, but more focused soundscapes.

Just ordered my Zoom H6... and can't wait to start recording. I am a wildlife photographer and film-maker and was looking after some introduction to field recording (I also do a lot of time-lapse sequences and as you might know, this takes a lot of time on the same spot which can be boring sometimes, so I thought some field recording and building an own library (and sell some files) would be a great idea. And so I find this introduction with you as a very sympatic person explaining all the things I was looking for. Thank you for sharing your experience with others (this is not soo often). Now, i have to watch more of your videos. And i definitely will leave a subscription! BR Five-Birds

My first recorder was an M Audio MicroTrack II. It had a little t-shaped mic that plugged into the top. Was a great little recorder. Biggest mistakes I made when starting out were handling noise when recording (had no suspension kit and used to hold it in my hand whilst recording), wind distortion form inadequate wind protection and not recording for long enough.

@@FreeToUseSounds I bought the MicroTrack in 2006, at the time field recording was even more of a niche than it is today and there were only a few handheld recorders on the market. At the time the MicroTrack stood up well against its competitors. I travelled extensively with it and it performed very well. One of the main advantages was the battery life and its small compact size. The preamps are not comparable to the quality in today's small handhelds like the Zooms or Sonys, but it was a great way to start field recording back then.

Great and valuable suggestions Marcel, congratulations! I am passionate about video shooting and audio recording (I should split myself in two!) and I started with the Zoom H6 then I took several microphones and the last purchase was the Zoom H1n! chosen because it is small and light and I have the opportunity to take it with me and go unnoticed in certain situations. This is a nice video to help people to start out. I started out years ago with a Sony Pro-Walkman, then moved to an M-Audio Microtrack pausing in between with a Sony MZ-1 Minidisc and Sony portable DAT machine respectively. Later, with a Tascam DR-680 which I found a little clumsy to use in the field. So a Zoom H4n entered and is still around till it got replaced by a H5. Along the way, a Zoom H1n and Zoom H2n came in, but neither gets used much. My SD Mixpre 6 recorder is my perpetual go to machine for the last few years and works very well for me most times!

I've been using Tascam recorders, starting with the DR05, then the DR-70D, then the DR44WL, and now the DR680mkII. Never had a problem with noisy pre-amps or mics, and the recordings (to my ears) sound smoother and more musical than what I tend to hear from Zoom recorders. For mics, I like the sound I get from Rode mics, although the only time I notice much difference from the built-in mics is in quiet nature environments.

I feel peace and happiness on it. Brazil is really huge, with a lot of amazing sounds, i live on a island called Florianópolis, who have above 100 beaches, and the perfect combination of urban places, and nature fields. I love to do mountain trails, next time i will record all the progress! And stop to rec specific sounds from nature! Like an Lofi producer (not professional), i ever fall in love with sounds of paper, and urban sounds on this type of "retro nostalgic music". And now i think, after have found this world of field recording, is like when you love something, but never have seen it before, only on your way (for example, me on Lofi). But now with having the knowledge that this exists, and is a amazing camp who have friends who loves the audio things like you loves it too... I wanted to ask if you think the F6 Zoom is good for recording nature... plus having the H8 as a back up fro interviews etc... I believe the H8 can do also VR recording which could be good for nature sound capture... ok mate, I'd love to hear your opinion! thanks!

  • @FreeToUseSounds

Hi Gabriel! Thank you so much for your comment and the F6 is a great recorder for nature sounds but you need a microphone to capture these sounds. I think the best allrounder microphone is the AT 4025. But in order to record nature sounds you need wind protection as well. Rycote has great options for this. For interviews you want to use a lavalier or a shotgun microphone. Yes the H8 is able to record ambisonic sounds but the capsules aren't out yet.
