    I did a tiny fit of Foley and field recording 10 years ago in my college years and always thought it was so much fun. Back then gear was so expensive so I never got my own gear. Recently I've been wanting to get into recording my hikes and taking some instruments up with me as well. I was always waiting to save up for a h8 or f6 but never fully commiting. You have finally inspired me to pickup a h1n and some Roland binaural sets and just go explore no more excuses. What you do has always been a kind of fantasy of mine, I use to love hitting things with my pen during walkthroughs of the aisles at the old jobs and that never went away throughout the years. I finally thought man if I had recorded all those different sounds I'd have a huge library by now! I also have an ether by soma and exploring is fun but I never get to record the sounds! Thanks for what you do and share, I really appreciate your content and enjoy very much experiencing part of your adventures! Best wishes. I hope to grow along with you.

    This was such a lovely video. Thank you! The soundscape makes enriches the quality of the experience a great deal. I have visited Istanbul and listen to, and watching, this video evoked such wonderful memories! I also own a Zoom H1 (the earlier version), as well as a Zoom H4. I use them both frequently. The H4 has become an audio interface as I work from home during our ongoing Covid-19 pandemic (I teach online, and with a simple Shure SM58 plugged in, it gives great audio quality to my students). The H1 is used for my VLOG and ‘run and gun’ video work. It is also great! Thanks once again. I am loving your videos.

    Hi Edwin! Thank you so much! The sound quality from the Soundman I have ( Soundman OKM Rock/Studio) is better as the Roland but they are also 3 times the price. Is the sound quality 3 times better? Not in my opinion. I know that the Roland are more robust and the cables are better and stronger. Soundman cables are very thin and you can easily rip them apart from the mic capsule if you are stuck somewhere. The Soundman still fit better in my ear as the Roland that is what I remembered and the foam is nicer. The Roland are great microphones for under $100 and I would recommend them anytime. Soundman has cheaper options but I never used them. I hope this helps?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    The F6 is indeed a great recorder and takes away the work of checking the levels all the time. But with having a small handy recorder you are most likely to get the sounds quick instead of pulling out the microphones, cables, headphones. :)

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    3 ай бұрын

    Hi! Monitoring with microphones in your ear isn't feasible because it would cause massive feedback, potentially damaging your hearing. However, if a friend uses the in-ear microphones and you walk behind them, that could work. But, keep in mind, the cables aren't long enough without an extension, and it might look awkward, not to mention the noise from the cables.

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Жыл бұрын

    It's wonderful to hear that you're venturing into the world of sound recording with a Roland binaural mic! The 160Hz you mentioned probably refers to a high-pass filter, which helps to reduce low-frequency sounds like traffic rumble or wind noise but I never used any filters and remove it in post if I have to. Regarding the limiter, its use often depends on the audio environment. A limiter can help prevent distortion but in quieter locations you may introduce more noise. You can test this on the H1n to see and hear the difference. Remember, the 'best' setting can depend on many factors, so don't hesitate to experiment with the gain settings Keep exploring and enjoying your recordings :)

    Hi Paolo! One of the best things about the Roland is that you can monitor and record at the same time. I think Soundman has a pair that can do that but I'm not sure which one because they have many. The one I have doesn't have it. One thing that bothered me about the Roland was that they never really fit in my ears. I loved them but they always moved out of my ear. I think the Roland don't come anymore with any sort of wind protection what makes it hard to use outdoor. • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Жыл бұрын

    Absolutely! Let me break it down for you. When using the Zoom H1n alone, you're recording a stereo image with an XY microphone position. Essentially, the capsules on top of the recorder are fixed in one position. However, when using a Roland or Soundman, for example, you'll be recording a different stereo image. With our in-ear microphones, we create a binaural stereo that more accurately mimics human hearing. Plus, these microphones are more sensitive, meaning you'll need less gain to capture even the quietest sounds. This results in less self-noise, giving you a clearer, more precise recording. I hope this clears things up! Let us know if you have any further questions or if there's anything else we can help you with.

    Hi. :) I've been watching a bunch of your videos the last few days trying to learn about ths very complex field. I'm a photographer, just getting into videography, and I know nothing about sound. Most of the words being used in the videos and comments are like a foreign language to me, lol. I'm hoping you can give me a bit of advice. I'd like to start making higher quality videos of my hikes and other adventures. I don't want to use a microphone attached to my camera but would rather have it go to a recorder to pick up the sounds of nature around me. I was thinking about having the recorder in/attached to my hiking bag and the mic also attached somehow to pick up the sounds of the forest while hiking. I need everything to be small and light weight since I'll already be carrying a lot of hiking and camera equipment. Would you recommend the Zoom H1N or Zoom F1-LP for the recorder? And, for the mic, would you recommend something like the Rode Video Micro, a lav mic, something like the Osi(?), or something like the binaural set you used in this video? As I said, I'd be hoping to pick up the sounds of the forest around me while hiking, though hopefully not the sounds of me gasping for breath, lol. I wouldn't want the mic on me, therefore, but rather attached to my bag like in a stealth video of yours. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you and thanks for all your great videos. Cheers from Maine, USA. :) Paula

    Hi! Well you would need a stereo set and you might want to look into Mic Boosters clippies. The Usi microphones aren't always available but they are very similar. You also need wind protection and make sure you'r bag doesn't make any noises while walking. But this is something you will find out very soon. For the recorder you could buy the H1n but keep in mind you need 3.5 for the microphones to work with it.

    @@meysammahfouzi 1. The reason for pairing the Soundman with the H1n is to create a more nuanced audio profile. While the H1n is excellent at recording ambient sounds on its own, introducing the Soundman binaural mic to the mix adds an immersive, three-dimensional binaural effect. This setup simulates the way human ears perceive sound, providing a deeply realistic audio experience. 2, The Soundman binaural microphones need a recording device like the H1n to function. While the Soundman mics pick up the sound, you need a device like the H1n to actually record and save these sounds, hence the pairing. 3. Yes, we did connect the Soundman to the H1n. To clarify, the Soundman microphones were plugged into the H1n recorder. The H1n then captures the sound from the Soundman mics and stores the audio files on an SD card for later use. I hope this answers your questions! If you have more queries, don't hesitate to ask. We're all in this learning journey together.

    Hi Ernst! I don't say no the ice cream and we would love to visit Vienna if possible. I do think the same way about that. Maybe not as H6 but maybe X8 or something like that. Technology moves forward and I'm sure we will see a handheld recorder with 32bit float. Maybe not Zoom but somebody will be the first.

    Hey :) so far I know you are walking the camino right now. So probably you can’t answer right away. I wish you a beautiful trip!! But maybe someone else know the answer the question. Do you guys know the difference between the cheap soundman okm for 50/60€ and the one for 200€. Are this more sensitive mics in the 200€ on or better build quality in general? And the second question is: I you would plug the stereo 3.5 trs jack to two xlr ports like on the Zoom F6, what kind of adapters do you need to get stereo right away? Third question: Could one record stereo on an smartphone with trrs plug or do smartphones just have mono-microphone input? ( For sure you need a trs-trrs adapter as well)

    I'm not walking the Camino right now. That is in October. If you need an answer about the difference, the fastest way is to Contact Rolf from Soundman. He can give you the details about the answer. Hmm, would you could do is using a 3.5mm stereo female to 3.5mm stereo female coupler adapter. The a regular 3.5 to XLR male. But I can't guaranty if it works at the end or how it sounds like.

    @@FreeToUseSounds Thank you for the tip! Marcel already answered me. It’s in German but maybe others can understand and it will help them as well. So i post it here: “es gibt die teuren OKM II Studio, die Computer vermessen wurden. Diese sind für professionellen Musikaufzeichnung. Es gibt die mit A3 und auch ohne A3 Adpater. Das OKM II classic ist das meistverkaufteste Mikrofon für Musik, Ambient, Field-Recording usw. Das OKM I ist etwas weniger empfindlich und oft für für Kameras eingesetzt und auch für Sprachaufnahmen geeigent.” Thank you also for your recommendation regarding the stereo splitter. I saw soundman has its own stereo-trs to XLR adapter. It’s quite pricey in comparison to a normal stereo 3.5 jack splitter.

    Another great video. Quick question, without headphones can you tell the difference between binaural stereo vs regular stereo? Is the binaural stereo anymore spatial when not listening on headphones? I have the Sennhieser Ambeo and I never know weather to convert the ambisonic file to regular stereo or binaural. Which one do you think will work better for a film mix?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you so much for watching! I don't think you can because if you run binaural recordings to a normal left and right speaker you just don't get the same effect. With having headphones on you are isolating your ears from the lets call it the "outside world" and you get a real feeling if people are walking behind you or whispering in your ear. But I hope other readers could comment on that too and share their experiences and opinion. Hold on you have the Ambeo? You mean the headset or the four cannel ambisonic microphone?

    @@FreeToUseSounds the 4 channel ambisonic microphone. I have the option to convert to binaural or regular stereo. In headphones the binaural sounds way more spacious. But if I won’t get that same effect on regular speakers, should I just use regular stereo or still use the binaural stereo anyways?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    @@CaptainShorif Wow, that is a really cool microphone but I believe to get a real effect of binaural you need to have either a dummy head with silicon ears or record with your own ears. I do have the H3VR and never exported or record binaural. I keep the files in ambiX or B Format. If I exported in stereo then regular stereo.

    Why am I watching your channel , and recording device reviews when my hearing is pretty much F####d ! I’m word deaf and my ears hear in different pitches. I’ve been culling my music library lately of every track that suddenly is completely missing certain instruments or is out of tune. I’m sure that it’s my hearing issues that caused my renewed interest. The film Blowout from 1981 started my interest, but I never followed through with it. Sounds Like road noise in a car while driving seem louder than ever. So does wind noise. In fact when it’s even slightly windy I need to wear a hood too cancel it out. Loose hoods work better than tight hats ? Acoustics have a lot too do with me hearing people or not. I could be stood in a kitchen and not understand words, but outside its 90 percent better. I’ve decided to buy a recorder and use it in situations where I struggle with my hearing. Not to review things I’ve missed but to try and see if I can hear later in a different environment. Now the question. Should I buy a recorder that I set the level manually, or should I buy a 32 bit float device ? Thanks
