    Hi Kyler! Thank you so much and the F6 is pretty awesome and small. So imagine you attach a pair of binaurals for your soundwalks to your ears or on the side of your bag you are all set! You have so many ambience recordings. Maybe consider creating sound libraries about them. I'm sure your audience would appreciate it even more.

    Hey Marcel, great video. I'm a subscriber of the sound library, love it... and so great to see you're out so much grabbing more material. Got a quick question for you. I'm about to invest in the DPA 4060 series and wondered what wind protection you preferred. I've been reading about a few options but of course, you're field-tested! Also, nice stereo bar in the video, was that custom?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Nuance! Thank you so much! Oh yes that is great choice and I have the Rycote wind protection and like them more because of the extra soft foam. I had them in grey but I recommend you getting the black once because its less visible. Especially for stealth. The stereo bar is costum and I bought the parts at "small rig"! Do you want me to link you the part list?

    Love your videos and thank you for sharing your adventures! :D Quick question: Have you recorded different ambiences in a single room (just at different locations within a single space). I know there are various audio projects that utilize this technique to make their voice actors sound like they are moving in a room. I think it's called convolution reverb or impulse responses?

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Zeroth! I do record room tone all the time and one big library I have published is from the Denver East High School! Today I actually publish a high school volleyball sound library from there. To create the convolution reverb I would need an impact like a gunshot, exploding balloon or clapping with my hands very loud. I haven't done anything like this yet. So I normally only record the room and the post production sound engineers who are using these recordings create the soundscape with it.

    Hi Chonkorio! I’m glad you found me and I think a Zoom H1n is truly one of the best recorder to start with. Especially if you don’t know where the journey will lead you. You can get this one and a wind protection for it and go out and record. I started only with a zoom H1. BTW, if you ever need replacement parts for these head phones, a company called Wang Industries makes replacement drivers, ear pads, plug adapters and cords. I find that a lot of people lose the adapter going from 3.5mm to 1/4". So I found a fix for that. A centrifuge tube can store the adapter out of the way. Hi Cheyen! I think they biggest difference is the price. The Sennheiser alone cost $1600 and the Røde is about $1000 what is a huge difference. For the Sennheiser I would need an extra wind protection what comes with it. I actually have my eyes on the OctoMic second order what has 8 capsule. I also talked with a few sound designers and what is interesting about is that they told me that they don't like recording ambisonic with these kind of microphones. Would be great with a Go Pro hero 8 or GOPRO Max keep smallest form factor and portability. Does the noise floor interfere with your recordings in very quiet places, Nature Ambience? (now if i could modify the top ambisonic mic piece on the zoom H3 and replace it with a higher quality lower noise ambisonic mic piece instead... we got a serious piece of equipment there ;) Where as my Binaural is not as portable or easily fit into my camera bag with the other gear. The Zoom H3 might be half the overall size and has out of the box stand alone functionality. Binaural Mic setup must have my Zoom F6 connected to it or mounted on camera. Hi Respin! Thank you so much for watching! Oh yes that is the case. The quieter the environment the more noise you get with the H6. If I'm in a room like an empty parking garage I go to the closest source that creates a noise. For example an air condition or wind in a tree just to overlay the noise of the H6. The F6 or the F8n are clearly much better recorders with more technique in it but to a higher price. Also it depends on what microphones you are going to use with it. Sometimes in the past I used the XY microphones and clipped it to the F8n to record sounds. That worked well. With the F6 you don't have the option. I never really cared about preamp noise because I love recording and for made it work to get really good recordings with it. Without the H6 I wouldn't have created the website Free To Use Sounds.

    hello from Uruguay, I want to try and start recording birds, would you be so kind to suggest a cheap equipment to start? I am old, and just want to record the songs of the birds I take photos of, but my Iphone is not really good for it. I need something better. I would dearly appreciate any help. The channels that talk about this subject sugest equipments that are around 2000 or more usd, which is for us a lot, (plus 1000 in customs duties) . I loved your channel, I am a fan of sounds as well ! Thank you and good vibes from distant Uruguay.

    Hi Daniela, Interesting! I'm curious to know which channel suggested such a budget setup. We recently made a video about a kit that costs around $1000 and is packed with excellent resources for getting started in field recording. However, if you're just beginning, you certainly don't need to spend that much. A good quality handheld recorder should be more than sufficient for starting out and these can be found for less than $500 with wind protection. Hope this helps!

    Hi Marcel, like your video and you have a nice smile~ One question I have is that compared to the small Omni stereo set up (Usi pro and 4060), what is the difference in the stereo method as ORTF or XY with large mic ( for example pencil condenser), will there be some difference in using scenario or recording distance? As small mic like DPA 4060 is also a good LAV mic if I remember it right. Also about the WILDTRONICS STEREO MONO DISH, makes me wonder one question, will there be a significant difference between this 3 mic microphone vs a standard m/s method microphone? Would be great if you have opinions about my question~

    Ah thank you Chenny! Always staying positive and happy! I personally never recorded sounds in an ORTF setup or don't have experience with these kind of microphones to set this up! I do found a great article about the difference so I forward you to the DPA website. www.dpamicrophones.com/mic-university/stereo-recording-techniques-and-setups I really hope I could help you with that question. DPA are great as lavs for sure. I think the biggest difference for the Wildtronics and regular MS is the range. With the shield I can capture sounds that are much further away. But for instance I would love to have MS set like the Schoeps in a Cyclone. The quality is outstanding but I have to put at least $6000 on the table for this. :) Little risky if you travel that much and something happen to the mic.

    hi, some simple (maybe stupid) questions, all about field recordings. with the contact microphone what do you use to temporary glue it to surfaces? is it a simple multitack? or you need something more professional to not affect the capturing of sounds? because you use between the surface and the actual piezoelectric plate, right? second small question. I saw LOM has almost everything sold out... is it something normal like already happened ? they prefer to produce units little by little? is impossible to find somewhere else. third question. can you suggest some stereoscopic mike that could be ok to start but that would be much cheaper? or you think that to start I could have the Lom Usi Pro for small sound and ambient together with DEITY mikes for more specific "loud" sounds? third last question. Do you suggest any website where they sell second hand and used equipment? ps. amazin channel. keep it up!

    Hi Gordon! Okay let me get right into your questions. :) 1. I use Blu Tack to fix the contact microphone and its really the best for me to use. So give it a go. You can find it online or in a home depot store. 2. Yes right now LOM concentrates on smaller unit sized and if Jones has new released and sends out newsletter. Everything is mostly sold out in less than a couple minutes. You have be lucky. Check out the Clippy microphones.They have also a stereo pair for a similar price. But you need wind protection for them. 3. Check out the Facebook group "Field Recording". You can start there and ask for help, advice and used gear.

Do you have any recommendations for something under €600? Do you think the Zoom H5 would be good enough? Thanks!

    Hi very interesting, what microphone would you use if you record street sounds from a motorcycle or bicycle, having as a premise, that record sounds only in front of the handlebars, to neutralize as much as possible the noise of the engine, or the noise of the bicycle, or the breathing of the driver. thanks in advance

  • @FreeToUseSounds

    @FreeToUseSounds

    Well. Your main problem is wind. So you need to find a way to protect the microphone from the wind. So in that case I would use a omni and hide in inside the handle bar or behind the wind shield. But what about vibrations? So you need to think about this as well.

    hi guys, I love your passion for sound and audio, it's very infectious. I'm currently looking to expand my gear for recording audio for my wildlife films. I have an H6 and a Rode NTG4+ shotgun. I also like the idea of having a smaller recorder to record voice when I am on the move. I'll check out the F2. Interesting to hear what you say about the parabolic failing, that is an expensive bit of gear to fail. Would you suggest not buying that model at all?

    @@TheDevonOutdoorsman Well I talked with Bruce and he said that its very rare but yes I paid over $1000 for it. I wouldn't recommend it because it has almost no wind protection. The one I had made in Singapore was fine but its nothing compared to the Cinela I have or other Rycotes. Without professional wind protecction I don't recommend it at all anymore. It lasted almost one year. I also had the SAAM from Wildtronics but I fell in Lisbon into the Sea with it ( true story) and the saltwater destroyed it. Yeah that was my other $1000 fault but its lovely sounding. This huge box has also no professional wind protection. Impossible to record on a beach or ambience in a windy city. You see thats already a $2000 mistake for the same amount of money I could have already gotten 2 MKH 8040 for that. I just saw a new post on the Rode Instagram feed. They might come out with a new wireless go. If that has 32 bit float, you should wait. Looking back I don't recommend the F1 anymore. The noise floor is huge compare to other recorders and the big issue is the battery access. It's made of plastic and the little knob broke off. Now we have to tape it to keep it going.

    @@FreeToUseSounds interesting to hear about the new wireless go possibly, I need to follow Rode on insta. I saw the accident in the sea, an expensive accident but the main thing is you were OK. At the moment I don't have $1000 to spend on a parabolic rig so I think I will wait to see how my sound recording journey develops. I am likely going to get another NTG4+ shotgun to create a matched pair and see how I get on with using the various recording techniques. Might also get the Rode blimp. I have seen LOM are totally sold out, hopefully they'll have availability soon and I'll make up some mini-rigs. Thank again so much, I have been watching more of your videos, keep up the great work.

    @@TheDevonOutdoorsman Hmm before you go with a second NTG4+ check out the Røde M5 or NT5. They come already as a matched pair. Also Oktava and Line Audio have paired options. Mic Booster are similar to LOM and not sold out. Also keep in mind that all these option need wind protection too.
