Zoom H1 Review (For Wedding Films, YouTube, Interviews, & More)

I often get compliments about the audio in my videos so I decided to throw together a video on my lavalier microphone setup as well as my workflow.

Jason Vong great stuff, JV! I have four Zoom H1s myself that I used to use the same way. Now I mostly use the Rodelink (which I have a couple of) into a Zoom F8 for lock down rigs. For run & gun I use a triple shoe mount on top of the camera with a VideoMic Pro on top feeding into the camera while a Rodelink rx feeds into an attached Zoom H1. So I can quickly Mic up talent but also capture solid back up and nat sound with the VideoMic Pro. I recently added the Tascam DR10L, too - the form factor is wonderful!

I've had the rode film maker for a while now and lost my pop sponge thing on the mic so currently using the wind breaker with it and looks like a scots guard button. Also got the zoom h2n and the h5. they are all great products and great in all scenarios. Going to try some experiments this year with them as not using the to their full potential.

When you use the Zoom H1 as a handheld mic for interviews (like in the video sample), don't you get annoying noise when people are passing the mic to each other and also just while holding in their hands? If yes - how do you deal with that?

Jason, at a wedding with just the bride and groom as the main focus, Input Level 45-50 should suffice correct? With that, white/ambient noise, what do you use to reduce that and produce clear dialogue?

Hey there Jason. I have a question. Can I use a lavalier mic with the Zoom H1 and get audio close to what you have for this video when I do content outside? I want something outside of the studio mic that is used for indoor videos, but I don't want the ambient noise to creep in when I'm talking outside.

I am filming some videos of artists talking and doing demonstrations soon and I’m trying to figure out how I want to do the audio. I have a rode video micro. Could I just get an extended cable and plug the mic directly into the camera while the mic is mounted close to the speaker? Or do you think it is worth buying a zoom h1 and lav mic?

How many times should you press the record button with the Zoom H1? As for a wedding: do you start recording right before you put it in the groom's pocket, then leave it recording for the whole wedding ceremony? and then sync up the multiple different videos and audio later? Seems like it is a ridiculous amount of work

I record table tennis competitions in sports hall (at a distance of about 10 meters). But the hall is often noisy and buzzing because of the audience and these videos are uncomfortable. Also the ball sound in the matches is not heard enough. What do you suggest to me to be able to shoot videos with my ipnone that both the sound of the ball is hearable and that there is no hall noise?

Zoom iQ7($99) , a DJI osmo mobile 2 ($129), and an iPhone 8 256. You should be able to find good cell phone carrier promo sale if you wait for the right time. I used sprint's buy 1 get 1 with a family member so i basically got it half price ($415 after tax) spread over 2 years (17$ a month+my plan). This will give you a killer setup for 4k video up to 60fps, excellent auto-focus, image stabilization that you would need to spend at least $1000+ on a Panasonic G85's dual IS (image stabilization in the body of the camera and in the compatible lenses) to achieve.

Hi Jason, Big fan, great content. Question: I use a similar set up but with a rode smart lav. I have a syncing problem tho. The audio doesn't sync with my 24fps footage. It goes out of sync in a few minutes. Its fine though when i record in 30fps or 60fps. Why would that be and how can i fix it to match my 24fps? Thanks in advance for helping.

Hello. I know this review is from last year. But i’m hoping you would respond to this question. Would this recorder be good for lectures? Say a class of 30-50 students. And the teacher is could be about 3 up to 10 meters away. I’m thinking of getting a recorder for lectures.

Remember the recorder is stereo so if anyone close to H1 would talk, cough or something like that you'd have that on recording (probably louder than actual professor). Up to you, you'd have to try it out.

When using the Rode Filmmaker Kit - do you connect it to the dslr or the Zoom h1? I imagine the dslr would create a lot of hiss that the Zoom h1 wouldn't? The Filmmaker Kit seems to be bouncing between -15db and -9db. But with the Zoom h1, you don't seem to have to bring up the sound levels? Thank you for the video. :)

  • @JasonVong
