    Wow, I'm just shaking my head in disbelief. Craig, thank you for your clarity. I'm just ashamed for humanity that one would need to instruct other videographers how to be a normal, nice, polite human being. Since day one, I've always contacted the audio guys ahead of time and then later introduced myself in person, said hi and created a relationship. It never occurred to me NOT to be a normal nice person. Anyways, thanks again for taking on this bold education task.

    As a current production sound mixer I also run a wedding videography company, I feel like the better option is to run wirelessly via the rode link which would implement the 1/4 to 3.5 in to the rode link transmitter which also for the field record (I use a sound devices 664) to be on you which allows you to adjust your levels and monitor your feed in a much more efficient way

    +Jeremy Bay How did your audio sound? Was it peaking all the time? I also use a H4N but I have 2 -20bd attenuators because using the proper cables (xlr/14) alone will make the audio bad and distorted. the attenuators will help and you won't have any peaking or distorted audio.

    +Kris Capiendo the H4N worked great connected to the DJ mixer. I got some great audio from that for the speeches. Not so much on during the ceremony. The DJ didn't have a wireless mic so he was able to give them a mic for the speeches at the reception (wired close to him) but not the ceremony. I had my new Sennheiser lav mic on the officiant which worked perfectly. For the groom I had a very cheap lav mic which cut out all of his vowels. His mic did work correctly to pick up the brides vowels but cut out right when he began. I have since purchased another Sennheiser!

    I plan on using the Zoom H1 to record out of the mixer (I know he says I won't be able to use it) but I've seen other filmmakers using it to record out of (its all I can afford right now) but I plan on using double RCA cables to RCA female splitter into a female 3.5mm w/ an attached 3.5mm attenuator and hooking that on my Zoom H1. Will that fix the clipping that you will usually get without a attenuator?

    Great videos I enjoy watching them. Just one thing...at 5:00 you mention that the line input is for mics and lavs, then you go on to say to use the line input from the board. Did you mean mic input first for the mics and lavs?

    yeah, this is still more confusing than before watching LOL! Apparently LINE is higher level than MIC, hence could use attenuators (e.g. -20db) to bring a LINE level audio source down to MIC level.

    Mic is basically a lifted audio signal. Line level is essentially without amplification. I assign an auxiliary out on my mixer for the videographer. They get the same signal I send to my speakers, and can easily unplug when they’re done pulling sound off my board. If they ask REALLY nicely, I can sometimes hook them up with a wireless low latency broadcast quality signal.

    Do you have a backup plan in case the DJ's audio is of poor quality? It's rare, but I've had instances where the DJ's wireless signal suffered from interference, making it largely unusable in the video, not to mention intolerable for the guests in attendance. In these instances I've quickly placed another external recorder in front of the speech reader, but it's never as clear as it would've been had then by holding a mic up to their mouth. I've thought about rigging up a my wireless stick mic next to the DJ's stick mic, so the speech readers would talk into two mics at the same time. I've also thought about attaching lavs to the speech readers just in case the DJ's audio goes awry. Your thoughts are appreciated.

Many times audio technicians or Dj's might just not want to. Not all of them but I don't take any chances. But If It's a request coming from the bride and groom then they wont say no cause they are direct clients of them.

    Hi Craig, HNY!! and many thanks for making this one of your fist vids of the year. Two questions, when connecting tip/ring/sleeve 1/4" to dual tip/sleeve cable from mixer to field recorder, and recording a mono signal, presumably this is a "balanced" connection. Does the field recorder automatically know this is a mono file and treat both cable inputs as one signal? (or does the cable connect the other way, t/r/s to recorder and t/s x t/s to L/R outputs on recorder). Is there a reason that a 1/4" tip/ring/sleeve to 1/4" tip/ring/sleeve cable can't be used? And secondly, do all mixers output only after leveling and EQ, or are there any ports on a mixer that just output original signal directly from microphones? I ask this, as audio quality is then dictated to how well mixer board has been setup, also, any 'on the go' level adjustments made by the mixer will go through to your recording, good and bad. many thanks Mark

Which seems to be missing on 5d3.. have u got a solution for this or a workaround without investing much on additional gear, especially i wish not to add extra gear on what i am to carry around.. Thanks." PS.. why i do so, it is only a backup.. sometimes if sound is too loud on one channel, u can always work with the not too great internal recording..

    Hi there, Im a bit new in audio, sorry if some of the questions are too obvious. I need to record an event (people talking) and I need to get the sound from the mixer. The XlR are taken and also the mixer is very far from where I will put my camera(professional camera with XLR)... I'm gonna record the sound separately with my Tascam DR-60D MKii, the mixer at the venue is a "JBSYSTEMS MM-10".I have a cable wich is 1/4" balanced Jack to XLR, so I guess I could plug one side of the cable, the 1/4" Jack into the mixer and the XLR into my Tascam I have few questions. 1- Are the all the output from a regular mixer Line Level? 2- Can I connect any of the Mixer output to my tascam...XLR,6.5mm TR Jack,Auxiliar Sends,Subgroups..etc Is there any different btw them? 3- Can I use the headphones output from the Mixer to record the sound into my Tascam or professional camera? My Tascam has Line Level 1000 time Thanks you!!

  • @MarcRobertsVideo
    @MarcRobertsVideo8 жыл бұрын

    Quick clarification on "line level" and the use of attenuators. The goal should not be to pad a line level signal down to mic level (although you certainly can). The goal is to make sure you don't overload your recorders input. Depending on what kind of recorder you have, your maximum input will vary. The h6 for instance has a built in -20db pad for each input for this reason. A common misconception about line level is that there is one standard line level. In reality there are different types of line level. Most importantly, the line level that comes from a large bands proper sound board. It is still possible to overload the rolands input just like you would overload a zoom h1. Its not a common thing but it certainly can happen. If I am working with a large band I will always use the built in -20db pad from the h6 or an attenuator. Love your videos!

    Hey @HoundDogMech you would be better using the 1/4" in the bottom of the H4N Pro. Use TRS (balanced) and you will be fine.

    Great vid Kraig. Do you find that you get a better signal from 1/4 or XLR, or both will be the same quality if coming from the same source?

    +Mitch Phillips Hypothetically if the 1/4" is TRS, it should be exactly the same. If its a TS, it will be ungrounded.

    +Luis Miguel Silva Do a test before hand. Put it on yourself and talk at a normal volume. Check the audio file on your computer, if it's to loud, lower the input and try again! Do the prep work before even getting to the wedding.

    I'm a DJ, and run into videographers wanting to connect into my mixer. I don't have issues doing it. The problem occurs when they connect to the back of my speaker. It either lowers my output, or basically shuts off the speaker. I believe it may have something to do with phantom power perhaps? Is that something somebody here can explain. I don't have an audio receiver, but is there a setting to turn off phantom power?

    Why 1/4" to 1/4"? The single male connector end would most likely only fit into a phones Jack on the DJs mixer, which would be unavailable because they would be using it for phones already. I can't think of where else you'd be able to plug in that quarter TRS (stereo) on the mixing board. I would imagine RCA tape out to 1/4" would be better and more efficient

    I apologize for this off topic question but I'm really curious about the background during this video. Is it black paper? I noticed it was keyed out during your review video, but it just seems too perfect to be green screen! if it is black paper, I'm especially curious how you managed to get that slightly off black color without getting a lot of noise. sorry again and thanks!

    +Coolcube Studio if you mean those cables with one connector on one end two on the other, that's beacause they split the stereo signal into two mono signals ("left" and "right")

  • @WeddingFilmSchool

    @WeddingFilmSchool

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Coolcube Studio Stereo is usually better than mono IMO. In either case, you can split the mono or stereo source into two different recording levels on your device. I think you go it. It's hard to type out and explain! LMK if you need clarification. I could have included this info in the video but I felt that it wasn't as important and would TOTALLY confuse people even more so yeah.... #shortcuts

    Hi! Thanks for your video. I am trying to record a DJ mix- have connected my mixer to a ZoomH4n through x2 RCA to male XLR cables via -20db attenuators. Channel 1 record vol is at 10 but channel 2 has to be up 100 to be at the same level. Do you know why this could be? Thanks in advance

  • @TG_TIPS

    @TG_TIPS

    Wedding Film School there is yes, it’s picking up a signal from both channels so connection must be ok, it’s just weird that channel 2 levels are so low. I have found a workaround which is to set the H4n recording setting to mono which seems to take the feed from channel 1(only) and output it as the recording to both channels. Works for now but still weird that I have to do that!

  • @WeddingFilmSchool

    @@TG_TIPS I'm sure it's some silly setting somewhere but it's really hard to know without looking at it, especially having not powered on an h4n for many years. Glad you found a workaround!

    If the Tascam DR-60D has a dual mono mode in which it records 2 mono signals - with the second signal at a lower volume, why go from the soundboard to the Tascam with a dual TRS input? Wouldn't that be like recording 4 signals?

  • @kirkdarling4120

    @kirkdarling4120

    7 жыл бұрын

    If you're lucky, there will be a fully mixed mono output from the board and you won't be feeding in stereo. In that case, the dual mono is just for safety. What I've had to do on a couple of occasions when only stereo was available--and the source was so wildly variable that I felt I needed a lower level backup--is to use adapters to record stereo on channels 1 and 2 at one level and then into the 3mm 3/4 channels to record at a lower level.
