When Snyder actually has a completed script/storyboards (the comics: 300 and Watchmen) to work from, with actual TALENT working with him to put a film together, he's a relatively good filmmaker. It's when he goes outside his skill set is where he exposes himself as a pretentious idiot; like JJ Abrams and his over-dependence on Mystery-Box Hackery to fool the masses into thinking he's on par with Spielberg in his prime.

Still love the fact that in the Snyder Cut, Darkseid could have won the war easily if he just 1. Released the army of parademons through the boomtube to overwhelm the Justice League 2. Shot the omega beam from his eyes through the boomtube to kill the Justice League 3. Sent Desaad to help Steppenwolf fight the Justice League He did none of that. He just closed the boomtube then got mad that Steppenwolf “failed” his mission (because none of his teammates helped him). Truly a logical course of action in Snyder’s vision.

I remember how all the marketing and reviews for the film - both good and bad - essentially described it as “Zach Snyder’s Star Wars pitch” Coupled with the fact that his reason for the director cut was feeling unsafe with releasing it initially and I feel like his problems stem from trying to play it safe all the time. He doesn’t take any big risks, even if he’s handed all the money in the world he’d need to get his true vision out there, which means in the end he gimps his own content

To this day I'm amazed that the ONLY unironically good movies he made were his first 2 outings: Dawn of the Dead and 300. Keep in mind that the former was merely a remake -- albeit a genuinely good one -- and the latter was an adaptation of a comic book. Funny enough, one could even consider 300's success to be a fluke due to the fact Snyder's signature style meshed well with the comic's story, themes and atmosphere. The moment he tried applying his sensibilities to more lighthearted and idealistic works like Superman and Batman, it resulted in butchered characterization amidst nauseating visuals and ill-fitting gloom and pessimism. His Watchmen adaptation was extremely hit-and-miss and his Legends of the Guardians movie was just...meh. Oh but things sure get interesting when Snyder tries his hands at original because it shows just how much of a hack he is. First we have that wonderful trainwreck called Sucker Punch, which can best be summed up as someone taking that "make the bad guys cry like anime fans on prom night" meme and turning it into a 90-minute movie. Unsurprisingly, geeks didn't appreciate Snyder's mockery and the movie bombed harder than Hiroshima. His Army of the Dead thingy was but a rehash of his Dawn of the Dead remake with much worse writing. And finally we have Rebel Moon, which felt like a pastiche of Star Wars, Dune, Seven Samurai and a bunch of other movies haphazardly stitched together with all the care and precision of a blind man throwing darts at a dartboard. It's safe to say that Zack Snyder is the pretentious, edgelord equivalent of Michael Bay and Roland Emmerich.
