YOW Legasee Surf Cruiser: Rose 31.5" Review

Спорт

It is the year of the Surfskate-Skateboard Hybrid! Your Own Wave (YOW) have made their first ever foray into a bushing based system that provides a lower, lighter, and more stable version of a surfskate, which they have branded as Surf Cruisers. I've been super stoked to test this out and finally the snow melted here and gave me a chance to test it out and get this review made. Honestly, it was a challenge as I am working on a computer that is over 10 years old and it is finally dying... Going to be putting a bit more effort into my content on Patreon hoping to build up some income to replace this ancient desktop. If you want to see some amazing surfskate content that is more content focused with a bit less attention on thumbnails and descriptions and colour grading, that is the place. Next up is a showdown comparison between YOW Legasee, Carver C5, and Solride trucks - The three surf-skate hybrid trucks that are on the market now. I think it is definitely going to be worth the low subscription fee. Go check it out: / surfskateunderground
Please note that YOW provided this board to me free. I review it honestly, factoring in the cost and value as I reference in the conclusion of the video. Hit me in the comments if you have any outstanding questions!

    Great review Mark! I think YOW didn’t market these the right way. I though it was a cruiser board and ignored them. As a C5 alternative it is way more attractive! This review will help a lot of buyers make the right choice.

    I agree. I think a combination of things happened. 1) they didn't want people to equate this with the Meraki and have customers thinking it would be similar feeling so they avoided using the term surfskate. 2) they do not as a policy compare their products to other brands, which is fine in theory, but it left all of us wondering if this would feel like a Cruiser? Like a CX? Like a C5? Like something completely new? 3) The polished advertisements didn't help answer the questions. We didn't see someone start from a stop and pump up to speed. They were already in motion and made it hard to differentiate. Once a board is in motion, a surfskate, cruiser, longboard don't look that different if you dont know the rider very well. Is someone turning like that because they can't turn any deeper or because they chose to do a longer carve?

    I’ve been riding my C5s a lot lately (injured my lead knee in January and, at times, it feels like it’s going to give out). If I hadn’t already been a C5 owner, I’d definitely check these and the Solrides out.

    Well done, Mark! At 2:44 you say it uses a reverse kingpin. Is it not a traditional kingpin?

  • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    Yeah, I caught that after exporting… I meant that the kingpin was flipped which keeps it low profile for grinds but I was ready to smash my computer at that point and just left it. I referred them to your excellent video for the tech specs!

    Taking video helps a lot! I am like a mm less than 6 foot. Also I practice trying to keep my arms calm, sometime I see if I can do a run with my hands in my hoodie pocket so I can really focus on shoulder motions with calm arms. I find that helped a lot but it feels a bit scary at speed.

    Will you recommend this over the Carver x Santa Cruz board introduced last year for bowls? I owned a Solride truck, currently finding the custom bushing a hassle. Can't get my hands on a C5 in my country.

    I bowl ride on a traditional board & ride a surf skate every now & again ( old school board, 15" wheelbase with CX trucks). I have loose indy 159 trucks on my traditional bowl board and once I get going just a little bit with a push I can pump surfskate style on it quiet easily. After all this style of pumping existed before surfskates did. I think my point is, do the Legasee, Sol ride etc with these "hybrid" trucks offer anything much more capable than what can be done on loose tkp trucks?

  • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    Жыл бұрын

    In my opinion yes, they do. To me the key difference is the directional aspect of surfskates that have the extra motion on the front truck which really let you steer the ship where the back truck acts like you fins in holding the follow through of your line. Even on LDP setups or loose ACEs or revenge trucks where the front and back trucks have the same geometry and turning radius - They can pump to maintain speed, but the feel is a lot more static - less free flowing.

    yow just sent me a board w/ mayo wheels. wish they were branded on the wheels like that. would love some ketchups lmao I do like the softer wheels more than expected after trying a number of other surfskate companies' wheels. that stuff aside, kinda crazy you don't wear a helmet.

  • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    I typically do in the bowls in particular, but not always if just having a flowy cruise. If I am trying something at the coping or learning a new transition trick, definitely. But those excuses aside, it is stupid, and I am a bad influence who is risking my own well-being to conform to societal pressure. It is sad that it is hard to get any respect in the industry if you wear a helmet. Early on I tried to prove that you could break the mold if you had the right skill and a good attitude but I was wrong and I caved. Someday hopefully a surfskate brand will sponsor a rider who wears a helmet. Probably the most underrated surfskater I know is at fewer than 1000 followers and zero sponsors because he always rides with a helmet. I have the utmost respect for him sticking to his values.

    Hi! I’m going to learn skateboard from scratch, do you recommend to buy this one to be the first board? I’d like to cruise around but also capable to do some Ollie and kick flips, but I’m not sure which board should I get, could you give me some advices🥺thanks

  • @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    @MarktheLandlockedSurfer

    I think it depends on what you think is the most important part of skateboarding for you. If ollies and kickflips are something you are keen to learn, it will be easier to learn on a regular skateboard with lower trucks and smaller wheels. But if it is equally important to have a surfy carving flow and also be able to learn to do skate tricks then this is a decent compromise that will let you do both. The compromise is that it isn’t the best choice for either, it is an okay choice for both.

    It is better than a standard skateboard, but not quite as good as a surfskate or cruiser with bigger softer wheels.

    @@MarktheLandlockedSurfer Understood. I was looking for a cruiser because the streets in my city are not in the best condition. I would love to be able to commute, shop and also ride for fun but I am very tempted by the option of surf skating I have never done it before but it sounds like a nice alternative to the constant pushing. In my country, boards from Carver or generally used for surf skating, even the cheaper ones are quite a big expense. A board from yow surf cruiser vermont doesn't cost that much and I'm considering this option. Should I buy or save more for something else or more specific?
