This is my favorite video you've made so far. Thank you for discussing this very overlooked topic. Funny enough, i was just discussing this with my wife yesterday. I told her. If you sell tem, at a minumum, you should be able to buy a new car with the proceeds. Ideally speaking ofcourse. Keep up the good work, my man.

This was a great video -- I'm 59 years old, and I've been struggling with many of the aspects you discussed with regard to my collection. You've given me some focus!! I'd already stopped purchasing new comics 4 years ago, and I had been filling some runs, but now I may not even worry about that. I may pick up a few more key books before I'm finally done, once and for all, but I'm going to stop accumulating. It's time to downsize, to separate the wheat from the chaff, document everything (I'd already begun this many years ago), and get it all organized.

I talked to my wife about this a few weeks ago. The key books I have that aren't graded I have assigned with a grade. I'm sure my grades are not perfectly spot on, but it will help her against a shady buyer or dealer trying to claim a book is thrashed and only worth $5 when in actuality its a silver age Avengers book in a VF+. I've also been putting the key notes on them. With a title and a roundabout grade she is able to easily research them. GREAT vid sticky.

Nice video! The wife and kids already know what-is-what. I build a very clever database with prices, valuations (most up to date) and images, notes, explanations of each books importance, cgc/cbcs/raw/page qual/grade/etc... Heritage wants the 20K and up books. The others have contacts for the under 5K. If the fam wants to keep them, that is their option. There is a distribution list. The attorney created Will exists.

I think this is a great subject. You're right, collectors like ourselves aren't buying new comics off the shelf now, we're buying expensive comics. My hope is that i'm still alive when we come to sell my comics, I'm gonna make my kids do all the hard work, then tell them the money is theirs!!! But if i dont get to live that dream, I hope my wife and kids know how to list on eBay... I think the graded comics will be easier to sell, but the raws they might struggle. Great video yet again!

This is a very important topic if you have a high value collection. I have gone through these details with my wife regarding my sports card collection, and a big takeaway from that discussion was to slab the valuable stuff. This is a big reason why i slab the more investment grade books in my collection. I wouldnt be too torn up if she sold the bulk boxes for cheap, but she better get good money for those slabs! Part of the discussion also needs to be where to sell, and fir the cards i advised her not to go local, but to use consignment or online auction companies.

Great video, you really should put a label on the comics so she knows what every book is cause that will really help, anyways after 16 years of collecting and 5 short boxes I am down to my last few books to get before I call it quits cause books are getting really expensive and collection comics isn't just not fun anymore so after I get Tmnt#1, gargoyles#1, watchmen#1,Hulk#181, X-Men#1 and maybe a page from Batman#1 I am calling it quits for awhile but some of those books are just a dream book cause they are so expensive. This should be done if you have a valuable collection AND a “worthless” collection. I buy collections and have had a couple instances of widows contacting me to buy. The collections were 90% trades/graphic novels and 10% modern issues. They both valued the collection as the cover price of the books. Thousands of dollars in trades that would be next to impossible for a re-seller to move quickly, or at all without blowout pricing. Let your loved ones know what’s valuable but also what isn’t.

Very interesting video. Should be shared with every loved one. Only small issue I was thinking about is the grade. It’s relatively easy to understand high grade means good but when it’s lower grade and a grail that’s when loved ones need to know the significance. So for example a JIM83 in a 2.0 or 3.0 is still super valuable doesn’t need to be an 8.0.

I would suggest a tiered will. Like leave you comics to the first choice but if they aren't around anymore then they go to the next person on the list... maybe have a 3 to 5 person tier. This way you won't have to keep updating it and also it could be possible to be on the same plane as the first 2 people on the list, if something bad were to happen your books are a free for all.

They should sell the comics via some auction house that can just facilitate the sale and transactions and put the proceeds in an S&P 500 Index fund. Easy. Only keep individual books that might be work some personal value to a loved one or child that they might cherish and keep.

I think people not in the hobby also need to know theres a whole bunch of trash graded and slabbed out there as well. Being made of Go Collect or Overstreet and the like is probably the way to go for someone to check on specific book values. I have a Mask #4 in a 9.2 i won on what not. To the best of my knowledge its a graded 25 cent bin book but someone graded it for some reason. Theres many more like it across every title out there.

You said a store owner would offer you a 100 bucks for your ( late husband's)100K collection. You are right they would if they could. Here is two of my stories- on that related topic. I happened to be in a comic shop back in the 90's when an old lady walked in with some boxes of old comics in tow behind her. She said her husband had died and she wanted to know how much the store owner would offer her for his comics. After a while I heard the store owner shouting at her - No I will not make you an offer, you tell me FIRST how much you want for it and I will tell you if I accept or not! Well, i thought this was rude but after many years of thinking about it i think the store owner was OK to take that position simply because he is profit driven. My second story is how i reacted and I'm a collector not a reseller. When a mutual friend send me to a house to examine a comic collection that the parents inherited after their son died (sometimes that happens unfortunately) they were elderly and they presented me a collection of about 100 comics. I told them I'm there at a friend's request and will only try to identify more valuable comics for them. There were only a few. One of them was ASM 50 in about VG condition and a couple of early Green Lanterns . I immediately pointed out the ASM and the Lanterns and said this is the most valuable of the lot. They looked at me and said yes-that is what another guy told us. So they knew already and were just getting a second opinion. After that they opened up to me and trusted me fully about it. O

Love how u always include one bad take per video(: Keeps u consistent. Obviously not leaving my daughter my tiddybooks. And I agree on variant covers solely if you're buying to invest. If I work my ass off, pay my bills & wanna blow hundreds on covers I actually like instead of "stable" books that hold zero significance to me, that's my business. Collecting should be more personal than being a key hunting obsession for long term investment. Let me enjoy my bullshit without catching strays. Everyone echoes the same sentiment about variants, but it's always from a financial perspective.
