    I only buy graded book that I love the cover. If I want to read it, I buy a raw copy. I believe in the far future perhaps it might be worth something. If not that is okay. I would only sell it if it made sense to. Slabs are for enjoyment. Practically worthless because of the personal emotional value it carries.

    As a collector since the late 80s. I'm a collector but I also had a limit on my wallet and just slowly built my collection through comicbook stores, garage sales, church bazaars, random meetings, etc... Being a collector at a comfortable price can be a slow process but every acquisition is almost sacred and has its own story which "adds" value for each of my comic books.

    Comics should be something you love to read, investing is always risky. People who are just "getting into comics" aren't here for good reasons anyway so who cares if they get ripped off. I have a few grails I always wanted I don't care what they are worth since I will never be selling them anyway. My kids may care one day but i'll be long gone

    I agree that I want to buy books that I love for the best price possible…but I also don’t want to buy a book for $1500 and have it eventually worth $0. I’m happy that the market is correcting and even over correcting on some books. BUT, when I sell my collection in 25 years or so, I would like it to still be valuable to leave money to my kids. (They are not into comics)

    Nice collection but strange? When that was the title I was expecting Reform School Girl mixed in with 1970s Richie Rich, Golden Age Superman that was for some reason signed by Stan Lee with German language EC comics and a complete set of Fawcett Ibis comics, I was expecting pristine golden age books, not low grade silver and bronze and modern. There was very little in the collection that I don’t see all the time.

    I’m a bit of a hybrid but depending on the store I can be the Let’s Make a Deal guy, and I feel like I need to defend us. I do think you left out some categories too… because I’m the avid collector guy who is the customer version of the old school comic shop. I like to talk comics. I like to exchange stories about the old days of collecting. I hope I’m not annoying like you said the Let’s Make a Deal guy is, but I can get a vibe. I’m enthusiastic about talking comics and I think some people love me for it but I know when the conversation isn’t wanted so I back off. In defense of the Let’s Make a Deal guy… wouldn’t you rather get an offer than sit on a book? Not everything flies off the shelf. If I see something goes for less on eBay, I’d rather give my money to a comic shop because I want them to stay in business but I can’t justify buying a back issue for $60 when I see it on eBay for $45. Incidentally I hate it when the store owners retort is, “yeah, but you’d have to pay shipping. You have to include that.” Yes, but you’re not shipping it to me, so why should I pay you shipping? Also when I do eBay I look at all the books, I try to buy as much as I can to maximize shipping. And also, just as a matter of good business, if you’re amiable to make a deal you might see me looking at your other books. If the price is fair and close to eBay I’ll probably just pay it. Maybe I’m annoying because you’re very busy, I get that. But a lot of places I think pad their prices in expectation of Let’s Make a Deal. In the world of conventions and flea markets haggling is almost always expected. Comic shops are often similar. Anyway, I buy regularly, but very little new though I do buy a few new books every week. No pull list except an occasional book I’ll ask for but the lack of a pull list is only so I can pick what covers I want. I’m like the speculator in some ways but I’m more of a collector because there are nonkey books I’ll buy because I love them, I collect them or they have sentimental value. In my heart I want everything but my budget disagrees. I search for comics regularly though like the speculators. I go to comic shops and comic conventions everywhere I find them as well as flea markets, garage sales… basically I shake every tree to see if a comic book will fall out. A store owner might see me as a casual if I’m not from the area, unless I stop for conversation. You can’t know unless I open my mouth that I probably went to two other stores and a few flea markets the same day.

    Like a whale, I research the solicits and let my shop know what I want well in advance. But my pull list is modest (8-10 issues a month) and I rarely splurge on something unexpected. Basically, I'm a steady, dependable customer for my shop.

    I too have been rethinking my submission process. I just sent in an already graded CGC 7.0 blue label with off-white pages of X-Men #94 that I had cracked, cleaned, pressed and then resubmitted for the Chris Claremont signing. The cleaning and pressing done on this book really made the book look way better. However, after receiving it back it dropped to a CGC 6.5 Purple Label with White Pages. Every thing about this book was different and it was very disappointing. I called CGC to ask where this color touch is, and they still haven't been able to tell me. They said once I crack the book their policy is that it isn't guaranteed anymore. I get they have to have this policy to cover themselves and sure, I can understand a grade drop and page colors maybe changin, but color touch that wasn't there before that is now. Either CGC screwed this one up when they originally graded my book, or they are misidentifying color touch that isn't even there. It pretty much is a crap shoot and what graders you end up with. I went into the process pf getting this signed by Claremont looking good on the value I had into the book, just to be in a huge hole. It really is a disappointment.

    I'm happy I bought this raw and graded. Spider Boy has been a fresh air in marvel comics, it's got 90's nostalgia with a modern twist, a fun character with that orphan/down on their luck past, and he's got Peter's puns. His style looks cool and I would buy those spider boy shoes if they dropped. Slott is a great writer, I can't believe you know nothing about his books.... (how many comics have you read in the last several decades?), he did the best Silver Surfer that can't be topped. His spider man has been good too, reminds me of the stuff I read in the 80s and 90s. Stop the hate! I buy these books not as an investment, I buy them because I like the character and it brings me joy to read. I can't stand 90% of comics nowadays, and everything you complain about is true for 90% of marvel's books, so you're basically saying "stop buying / reading marvel comics" ... I don't get any "wokeness" from spider boy either. I'm glad you're wrong about this book, it's a good collector's book that will go up as the character gets more features and over the years. I know it's not low print run, but it's fun to have!

    Your take is cynical and uninformed. First, the donor is quite well off financially from his lifelong profession. Second, America's best colleges and Universities receive multi-millions of dollars from their wealthy donors. Third, the donor made his rationale completely clear: to preserve the many decades of comic books as a cultural reference, an effort that is best facilitated at a top tier academic research institution such as the University of Pennsylvania, the donor's alma mater. Finally, the donor is but one of thousands of college graduates with degrees in business that had successful and lucrative careers, and owe debts of gratitude to the colleges that started them on their career paths.

  • @thebountyfisher
    @thebountyfisher6 күн бұрын

    Calling it a scam is crass. Donations happen quite often, the main thing to take away from this is that not all recipients are in a position to issue an official tax donation reciept to be used toward ones personal taxes. The Foundation seems to be in place to help figure out some of the places who could, and it looks like in different jurisdictions, there is some official Treasurer in place to make the final determination on who can or can't issue a tax receipt. Lastly, as an accredited appraiser I can assure you that doing an appraisal of this type is not something anyone here should take lightly. No one is going to stick their neck out, and worse, under the scrutiny of a treasurer or finance person looking over the numbers and contesting that opinion. I've done such reports, and usually the people who go this route are doing two things mainly. The first, is to uncomplicate the process of dispersing of the property. This is a couple at an advanced age, who shouldn't have to spend the final years of their life dealing with momo's like you, who would probably nitpick and complain about the smallest thing so you can turn around and make bank on it, and tell everyone here on KZread how swell a person you are for screwing an old person out of their fortunes. The other are the financial advantages of liquidating a collection of this size in one fell swoop. It's also petty to be bagging on the insitutions as they do have to process this collection, and decide suitability for their purposing, and if people saw this as a good news story, rather than trying to find fault in it, maybe we'd be better off as a collecting community than we are by guys who bellyache about people donating their collections.
