Yamaha Montage and MPC One the Perfect Pair?

The sequencer on the Yamaha Montage is made for speed and ease of use not depth. However the Akai MPC One has a very powerful sequencer. When paired with the power of the Montage synthesizer the possibilities are really endless!

    This is amazing the way that the MPC One can integrate really well with the Yamaha Montage. We hope to see more videos of the MPC One and the Yamaha Montage workflow in terms of producing, tracking, recording, mixing and seeing how intuitive these are together in a real-world situation. Keep these videos coming Darrick, love the content you put out

    Thank you so much for this video! For months I’ve been watching MPC videos, dozens of them, and none of them have really dug into the sequencers, until now. I’m using Cubasis on my iPad for sequencing in a live situation and it’s ok but, surprisingly, there are a few limitations. Plus the fact that the iOS has been unproven, at least in the long term, for stability in a live situation. I’ve been on the fence about buying the MPC for months now, but your video has given me so much great info that it’s hard to ignore “going hardware” from now on. Thank you , again! Liked and subscribed!👍

    @@darrickkeels6387 Yeah, that’s kinda what I figured, knowing Akai’s long history. Back in the day (since I’m an old fart 😆) I had my rack of modules, my Fatar master keyboard, and a little Roland MC50 to run everything. Never had a single problem (unless a cable pooped out on me) for years playing countless shows around the north central US. Which is why your videos have really made me reconsider my approach (software vs hardware). Thank you again, Darrick, for your awesome videos! 👍 😎

    Thanks so much for sharing your experience. I’m a MODX user and have been searching for an intuitive hardware sequencer for some time. I shy away from daws because I find them cumbersome and it gets in the way of my kind of creative process. Your excellent video addressed just about every question I had. My goal is sequencing MIDI primarily but a minimal amount of audio loops is a plus. I also do most of my work in a linear fashion and I can see how the MPC will accommodate that. Your video was perfect for me. Thanks a bunch.

    Darrick... I purchased MPC One to pair up with my MODX. As I said earlier your video was greatly informative and your workflow is exactly like my own. I got the MPC One yesterday and am having trouble getting any sound to or from the MODX. I’m hoping you can give me a quick tip on setup because I think that’s where I’m not setting things up right. I’m using USB for MIDI and am running my audio output directly from MODX to MPC inputs. My MPS is output directly to monitors. I get tHe sound from the MPC sound but no MODX. I can see the indicator on the track that the MPC is receiving MIDI data. I’ve checked settings in the MODX utility section on MIDI I/O but I’m as dumb as fence post on MIDI settings. Any help would be appreciated and I’d be more than happy to pay for any services you might be able to help with. Thanks in advance for your time.

    With me it really kind of depends. If I am making a hip-hop kind of a song or any kind of EDM music I start with drums. But R&B I will normally start with chords. Depends on the song really. Sometimes I need something to play drums to. When I record jazz, I never start with drums. Normally piano, then drums and then bass. Sometimes I go back and record the piano part again once the drums are in. But really in a video like this I’m not trying to make good music. I am more so showing the process. When I am really recording something for real life use, a song will take me around 4-6 hours. I do lots of editing, mixing, overdubs, swap out instruments, edit instruments’ effects and other tonal qualities.

    This is why I have a Motif XF8, it actually has a real sequencer. Sure, it's not a touch screen, but it's easy enough to get around. The sequencer is quite powerful too. I hadn't considered using my MPC Live as a sequencer with my board, but I may try this, would be wonderful for sketching, then plug into a PC, import it all into a DAW and use my large instrument libraries. My MPC Live does not get much use because I don't write beats. Writing three sections of a song and then muting tracks and creating multiple sequences with various tracks muted is not really writing music, its stitching together loops.

    This was absolutely fantastic tutorial, and it has me thinking about the possibilities! 👍👍 (I, too, would rather leave the laptop at home!) One question: I am no longer great at multitasking, so is there a way to have the MPC hit the pads for me to switch to another sequence, and do the correct order of sequences throughout the entire song? I have heard that the MPC doesn't have a 'song mode', but perhaps there is a workaround? 😎😎 p.s. I really enjoyed your singing & your unique arrangement of one of my favourite songs! 👍👍

    Hey! Pro keyboardist and mpc one is pretty rare combo, nice! I have a question for you: Is there a way to hold workstation-like preset/project on One? Meaning I load rhodes, strings, pad, solo synth, etc. In the One's ram and play with midi keyboard my gig, while switching either with Program Change or midi ch ( a bit easier on some keyboards than others), so essentially One would be the brain for any keyboard. What's the workstation functionality of One is ? Can you do multiple sounds at once? How about key zones? I very much into sampling my own sounds and right now I have really painful process of getting my instruments into triton le (but weight is perfect and stock waves are top notch!).

  • @darrickkeels6387

    @darrickkeels6387

    2 жыл бұрын

    Yes you can load up sounds like EP strings, piano, pad etc and play them like you would on a workstation. However what you will run into is polyphony issues. This is because the MPC is truly a sampler and sequencer. It's not really made to be able to be played like a keyboard. Of course there are workarounds like sampling notes, applying them to the pads and then setting up each pad to respond to the different keys on a keyboard. But then you will run into issues using the sustain pedal or pitch bend. Now there are probably ways around that but now we are talking about lots of work and the results still won't be as good as an actual keyboard. The MPC is a great sampler, sequencer, and digital recorder. It's like having a DAW in a box. However, it's certainly not a replacement for a keyboard like the Montage.

    Thank you for watching. I appreciate it! Yes, $2500 for a Montage is a really great buy. The Montage 6 is normally $3000 brand new. If money is tight you may want to consider a MODX6 though which cost 1399.99 most places in the U.S. Yes the keybed is cheaper, it has less buttons, faders, and knobs, reduced FM polyphony and a few other drawbacks that may not be that important to you. But most of the functionality is the same as the Montage. I did a video just before this one comparing the two and went over ALL of the differences. If you don't mind the differences the MODX is a great buy. I believe the best value digital performance synth on the market. Flagship functionality at less than half the price.

    Hey @Darrick Keels, thank you for sharing this video. I can say I have watched about 3 or 4 of your videos so far (Montage, Great Kronos) and to be honest they are packed with so much value and you take your time to present as if you are teaching, imparting knowledge and not hyping. Please keep it up Sir. This is excellent from my vantage point, perfect delivery. This is an interesting set-up. I am for everything MODX so I am inclined to get the most out of it (I don't own one as yet..(:-) though...) as a standalone or with the free Cubase. Tell me something, given the MODX can do a bit of sequencing, can you use it or with Cubase to do the live performance as shown here without much trouble? When the singing started (or you started singing), was the MPC out of the equation at that point? I would love to see you do something with Cubase and the MODX...

    If I want to get sounds out of the MPC into a DAW I create audio stems, save them to a USB or SSD and pop it into the computer. If the sounds are coming from the Montage I will just record the audio into a DAW straight from the Montage. The Montage has an audio interface capable of sending out 18 stereo tracks simultaneously. I am not sure what you mean by VST mode. It does have deep DAW integration with Cubase, Ableton and Logic but it will not be "seen" like a VST. At least not like Roland Zenology stuff which are truly VSTs.

Question 2: When you hook the Montage up via USB, can you use the outputs of montage for audio output of the MPC? I believe Maschine+ let's you do that with class compliant devices. The MPC One can do bank and program changes. If you go into “List Edit” menu you can automate program and bank changes. No you cannot use the Montage outputs as the MPC outputs when hooked up via USB. The USB only sends MIDI signals from the MPC One. You could always connect through the A/D input on your Montage though. Then it would come out of your outputs on the Montage.

  • @darrickkeels6387

    @darrickkeels6387

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes sadly "workstations" have fallen behind. They were once cutting edge, not anymore. I think companies like Korg, Roland etc. realize they are dealing with an older and aging market when they make workstations. But Akai is actively trying to capture a younger market of "beatmakers" to secure their future. The Roland Jupiter X was designed to look like the Jupiter 8 from 1981. It is packed with all of the sounds from the past. The SH-101, Juno-106, XV-5080 etc. They charge $2499 so that a person can have all of their old sounds. The new Roland Fantom can contain all of the SRX Expansion Boards (with a download) that launched over 20 years ago. They are clearly catering to people who have been playing since then. Or were around when the Jupiter 8 was in its prime. Unfortunately, when catering to an older generation, innovation can become stagnant. The Kronos is the most "powerful" workstation on the market today. Its sequencer has only one level of "undo." It has no piano roll, no pinch to zoom, only 16 MIDI tracks (as opposed to 128 on the MPC). So if I wanted to change just the hi-hat velocity levels after recording, I'd have to adjust each one, one by one. 8 beats per measure, 100 measures means 800 adjustments. A younger generation used to using DAWs and iPads simply will not tolerate that especially when your keyboard costs nearly $4000 after tax.

Also not very convenient to record multi-part Performances on multiple MIDI tracks at once. Your video was very inspiring, and I almost pulled the trigger on an MPC One to pair with my MODX, but after spending some time with the MPC Beats free software, for me still a DAW is the way to go. Poor Montage it's sequencer was an after thought. The yamaha rm1x sequencer was good. If there was a modern version of the rm1x with touch screen & modern DAW type sequencer it would be perfect. Like a mini montage mpc combo moving away from the mpc pads & towards the rm1x mini keyboard.

    I respect your videos bro but comparing with Montage to modx same sounds are in both so to me Montage is just a modx with aftertouch and more nobs sliders robust body that is not a flagship keyboard yea the keybed on the Montage 6 is way better but the Montage should of had a different screen and sounds and functions than the modx. That's like saying Yamaha's flagship keyboard is the Montage and the modx.l love Yamaha but look what you can get for a little more money korg Kronos sampling and you can record right into I never played or had a chance to play one. My point is Yamaha could had made a flagship keyboard that had way more options and different sound engines in it than the modx and I'm not a Yamaha hater most my synthesizers are Yamaha. What are your thoughts anybody tell me if you think Yamaha could had made a better flagship synthesizer than the Montage?? I think they were just trying to save money and time. This is what is making me have a hard time deciding on what to get a Montage or Roland FA 6 and MODX or Roland Fantom 6, or FA 6 and korg Krome.I have a moxf6 and CS6X and E MU Sound module. Also can you do what your doing on Akai force I can not find out or on the force can you change clip lengths other than 1/4 need more than that if I want to do what your doing on mpc one thanks

    Yamaha made the decision to move away from making workstations because in reality most people are working with some sort of DAW for sampling and full blown production work. In the early and mid 90's every major studio had a workstation there for recording purposes. Now, what you see is Logic, Pro Tools, Ableton and plugins. Try quantizing just the hi-hats in a drum track in the Kord Kronos over 200 measures. It takes forever. The sampling process is very slow and the manual 1170 pages (I read it.) The Kronos is still on a 32-bit system while computers are on 64-bit. The Kronos only gives you two channels out via USB to a computer, the Montage gives 32 out. The Kronos' operating system was derived from the the Oasys which came out in 2005. (16 years ago) The Montage is a powerful synthesizer and they made the MODX to be the best bang for your buck. The MODX is the hottest selling digital synth in the market. It was a smart move. And a lot of the Montage buyers are former MODX buyers. Hence Korg launched the Nautilus and included all of the sounds from the Kronos and made the screen size identical to Yamaha's. In short, yes the Kronos offers a lot. It is the most powerful keyboard, but nowadays the market of people who are doing everything on their keyboard is aging and shrinking.

    @@darrickkeels6387 I agree I've been playing for 29y started on old sampling casio CK-5 small but powerful for 1986 kid keyboard and moved up to more casio 61 keyboards and then Yamaha. Back then you would see lots of Yamaha and Casio keyboards in radio shack, K Mart,Sun TV, . As I got older wanted to play on better keyboards so next was the Yamaha PSR 330 with 5 track sequencer from best buy and two years after that was Roland EG-101 groove keyboard, Boss BR - 8 digital recorder, E- MU XL- turbo,Roland V Synth,Yamaha cs6x , Said that later had to sell my Roland's in hard times the boss br 8 zip drive is shot. So I can not record my synthesizers individually that's the only way I no how. So my last keyboard is the moxf6. The reason I got it was the fact It had a 16 Track sequencer so I could work intuitive or pattern and set each track to a loop length without effecting the other tracks plus not having my digital recorder still need something that sounds better to buy now. I don't use computers.never stopped me from making great electronic music that was not repetitive and started with thought out measures for each part and getting all Your parts in place with B R8 digital recorder. But now I need a more powerful synthesizer with rich organic sounds,was going to get the Montage 6 back. I bought it last year had it for 27 days and had to return it,but now I have the chance to get It back or go with Roland Fantom .For new work flow thinking a digital recorder,MPC one and MONTAGE or Fantom. It's bin driving me crazy.what would you suggest For a Dawless setup. Thank you darrick you no what you're talking about with synthesizers and more.Was thinking of getting Akia force hoping it would have the same midi sequence out to Montage but don't no even by watching other KZread videos about it do you no because I would think it would be just as good with more samples and 4 synth engines do you no?

    @@jeremyfrey5589 Because you are coming from MOXF I would personally go with the Montage and Akai Force or another MPC. I have nothing against the Fantom per se. However currently it only has a pattern sequencer and it limits you to 32 bar loops. It only has two time signatures available 4/4 and 3/4 time. If you plan on incorporating any kind of audio tracks in your productions the Fantom also does not support this feature. Roland has taken a different approach to their sequencer to give it more of an Ableton Live feel but it is fairly limited. Their thought process is the same as Yamaha I’m sure. And that is that market research suggests that most (not all) producers are using computers to some degree for production work, hence the Fantom has excellent integration with Logic and Mainstage. In fact the best integration I’ve seen on a workstation. You could always get a Fantom and an Akai MPC or Force as well. The Fantom has more features than the Montage because it is a workstation not just a synthesizer. The reason why I like Yamaha better is due to the sounds. It has better woodwinds, brass, strings, guitars, etc than the Roland offerings in my opinion. But Roland is always releasing updates. But a lot of their sound upgrades focus on giving their users their old sounds from the 80’s or early 90’s. Not my cup of tea personally. But all in all the Fantom, Montage, Kronos or even a keyboard like the Kurzweil Forte are all very powerful. In the hands of the right musician, they all sound great and produce phenomenal music!

    Yes because it has a better workflow than the sequencers included on the expensive workstations today. But the MPC doesn't have sounds that really work with all genres of music. Pairing them together, you get the best of both worlds.

    @@darrickkeels6387 Absolutely, loved OS 2.8 update for the MPC made it a breeze for sequencing multiple instruments, although I love the convenience of software DAWs I am very old fashioned and feel there is a more tactile feel and organic vibe about different stand alone hardware working together. thanks for the reply, respect to your music.

    The guitar is really underwhelming and sounds kinda corny especially in comparison to the drums, brass, piano and bass, I thought the sounds were sample based?? I"d expect realistic sounding guitars...I want to work more stand alone but vst's like komplete sounds superior, which once back in the day was the other way around... but the price seems a bit steep in that case...it sounds a bit sterile flat old school midi-esque

    I could definitely make the guitars sound better. I literally just picked a generic arp and laid something down quickly. This is because what I wanted to show was that the MPC can be used as a sequencer and music production beyond EDM music. A lot of keyboard players simply think of the MPC as a "beatmaker" and nothing more. I wanted to show its sequencer is actually more powerful than the most powerful sequencers in hardware keyboards today. So I did not take the time to play the guitar part effectively. I didn't really spend time dialing in effects or even picking out the best sounds. I didn't add any articulations to the horns, etc. All of that would make a six to 8 hour video, and I'd have to take even more time editing it all down. But if you really want to hear the guitars, check out this link: kzread.info/dash/bejne/dGdkrNKpnKeyldY.html.

    Not related to the sequencer aspect, but I must say the Yamaha sounds cheesy. :) Kind of like the antithesis of hip-hop, french house etc. that are based on getting a full sound texture by sampling records.

    Keep in mind it is a synthesizer designed for sound design. I simply used single part presets to make this video. The Yamaha is capable of sounding rich but you must take the samples and design your own sounds. The Yamaha Motif series has been used in many hip-hop records and this keyboard contains all of the sounds from the Motif XF.

    @@darrickkeels6387 Ok sorry about that, I took the video as representative of the device. But anyway, it was a funny contrast, seeing an MPC and expecting a certain range of styles or aesthetics, and then getting these sounds that are more like from "entertainment auto-accompaniment". I just ordered an MPC One myself and I'm waiting for it to arrive. One of my hopes is to do some DAWless sequencing, concentrating on different things, without the gazillion plugins of the computer world. Maybe I'll connect the MPC to my vintage Roland MT-32 for a super weird combination? I heard retro sounds are hot, and the MT-32 is from 1987!
