    Really enjoying your reviews, Sam. Calm, well-explained and charismatic. Great job!

    I believe you handled the gatlings wrong. It says on the card "Once per round prevent all other damage done to all other troops in this by an enemy ability" An enemies attack is not an ability. Abilities are more like reveal abilities, or special abilities like "deal 4 damage to all other troops in lane when this enemy attacks". Because it is a standard attack, and not an ability you cannot use the vulcan/gatling to prevent damage from that enemies attack. @8:53

    You're right...my bad! The use of the second gatling gun was improper...but the first one was correct.

    awesome, wasn't expecting a review for this one for a little while yet. glad to hear it's just as good as the first, can't wait to get my KS package for this one, especially with the Nortec elite I longed for for so long!

    Found this one for $15 at Ollie's. You can get good games there for cheap sometimes, but this is by far the best one I've gotten so far. Very well designed, fun game. Now I want to find the original because I believe you can mix in the cards.

    Same here. Ollies for I think the same price. I picked it up mainly because it does have a single player option. Haven't tried that yet though.

    1) Is this better than base + expansions ? The boss rule is neat, I am going to house rule it in our games from now on.

    Having never played Onslaught before, would it be beneficial for me to get that game before trying this one? Or do you think I could jump right into the Xenoshyft franchise with Dreadmire? Should I even bother with Onslaught or should I just go for Dreadmire?

  • @klinktastic

    I backed Onslaught, but forgot to back Dreadmire. Just picked it up for 50% off at my local gaming store. Can't wait to play it. Great breakdown. I think adding the boss into round 3/6/9 mechanic back into Onslaught might be a good call. It did suck to get a boss on the first turn and get your asses handed to you.

    Sam, should I wait and purchase Dreamire when it hits stores, or go ahead and purchase Onslaught? Is it worth having both in the future?

    Owning Onslaught myself and after 31 plays of it I can tell you that the game offers a good deal of variety even by itself, especially as far as enemies and item cards are concerned. However after a while you start missing some different troops, which without expansions are going to be the same 8 every time. For this reason alone - in my opinion - it's worth owning both... not to mention the fact that having two kinds of enemies to fight can really enhance the re-play value of the whole thing :) I would recommend you to buy Onslaught first, try the game out in its simpler incarnation and then, if you liked it and if money/shelf space isn't an issue, buy also Dreadmire :)

    If I'm not mistaken, you don't have to discard your xenosathem if you decide to keep it in your hand instead of using it for spending. It says in the book that you can use it for later rounds. Seems confusing since you would just count what you were going to spend before you took it out of your hand

    I never played Xenoshyft, but I am really interested in buying it. I have a bit of a problem with the card text being not exactly specific though. For example the Twilight Stalker in the first combat has a text of "deal damage to the last troop in this lane" - normally I would consicer the monster lane and the NT lane to be separate so even despite it being confusing I would deal damage to the last MONSTER. And I ran into this problem with multiple cards while watching your various reviews, does the game make the card text clearer after reading the rules? I know this would probably go away by playing multiple times, but since english isnt my first language I would not like playing my first game wrong...

    Hey Sam, is this game and flavour text on the cards tongue in cheek like Starship Troopers? Or is it actually played quite seriously

    onlynplayed Onslaught, but I'm assuming that Dreadmire will be much the same, so. it's very dependant on the number of players, 2p roughly takes me around 45 minutes, probably add another 15 for each extra player.

  • @Mambaru

    Having played Xenoshyft a fair bit, I would say yes. It's an additional mechanic in Dreadmire to make the game both a little harder and more interesting. If you have new players, then drop it, until they are ready for it.

  • @StefanoDiSilvio

    @StefanoDiSilvio

    I actually think it would compromise the balance of the game. Many aliens seem to be pretty weak without their weather ability. Not to mention some equipment cards that play with the weather and would become completely useless without it. When introducing the game to new players, my advice is to play first against the Hive, aka the aliens from Xenoshyft: Onslaught. Based on what Sam said and my analysis of the cards after 30+ plays of Onslaught, the Hive should also be easier to defeat and therefore more "beginner friendly" :) Hope this helps^^

    Why is it called an expansion?... Is it compatible with the original (can you use weapons or monsters from the 1st game, for example)?...

  • @ToucanSamich

    You can mix any of it in that you want. Mix onslaughts enemies into the waves, take your pick from any of the original soldiers and bring the old items in. The only problem being that the cards from Onslaught have to interaction with the weather of the Dreadmire, which doesn't break anything, just means it will be used less. I plan on mixing some of my favourites in when I receive Dreadmire :-D

    Is it hard as in you need to plan really carefully or is it luck of the draw hard?

  • @XShrike0

    @XShrike0

    I have only played the base game and have won a few times. It is luck of the draw. What gear is available to purchase is random. What you get in your hand is random but, you do control what is in your deck. Even then you can get a round of little to no soldiers and all gear. Then the monsters come out randomly. You can plan one way but, what comes out can completely negate your plan. I don't get the hype and it also plays just a little too long.

    Well, This is a Deckbulding, so a good draw can be useful. But, as you are adquiring stuff directly into your hand and there will never a turn in which you dont have Xenosathem to adquire new things, plan carefully and talk stratedy and cooperation is in my opinion more important than luck.

    I just really hope that this will be harder than the first one which we've only lost 1 out of maybe 15 plays, kinda sounds like it tho with the weather and extra enemy effects.

    You managed to lose. My group was wondering if it is possible. The one time the random setup made it difficult for us we still won comfortably. Our inside joke for this game is that we say we already won before we begin.

  • @Nurgleprobe

    Marcel Pogorzelski Yup the first time we started the game, to much damage in the first few rounds becuase we we're not sure about enemy effects/how to play for best effect. After that tho... :/ As I said, I hope this will make it more challenging, becuase I do enjoy the system.

    Haha, we've played by the rules, even kept up to date with the F.A.Q to make sure we're not doing anything wrong. The game is still very easy once you learn the strongest cards and the ways to play them.

    Yea i witnessed and read some "this game is too easy" topics on bgg, and then suddenly it came out that people writing these posts were using ordinary instants or abilities like storm trooper's 2dmg shot to kill enemies before their reveal effects (which is illegal move) or were not discarding equipment when they should or any other mistakes that seem minor but take big effect on gameplay, which is kinda snowbally. The best guy ive ever seen was drafting free militia cards from deck (because they dont cos anything lol) and discarding them to get a free tier 2 items on wave1. Srsly. So i take these "this game is to easy" posts with a grain of "i dont believe" ;) Some combination of cards are really op and i admit, but you only realize this after some serious beating. You need to be experienced to win this game all the time. I won a lot with some cheesy combos, get Hive add-on and still im losing sometimes. This game is not easy and for total newbies is brutal.

    Sweat? My problem with the original was that I knew we where going to win. The worst play through I had of this game where everything went against us we still had 20 life left.
