    Coup is pretty much gaming perfection based on game vs time ratio - has a distinct early, mid and end game feel and captures the excitement of a poker tournament in 10 minutes.

    I really want to get spyfall to the table but I have trouble selling it since it seems to make my friends anxious knowing they will have to be put on the spot or come up with questions to ask. I told them that's the point and everyone gets a chance. I decided to try and create a set of basic questions that could help people and maybe that will get it to the table more I hope. Thanks Sam!

    Just want to say that I learnt some games that I haven't really heard of before. Thanks, I will read more about them. I am on the lookout for games that have small footprint for playing on bus/train trips. Currently only Love Letter fits the bill.

    No wrong or right Sam. Well presented thoughts to help see if your choices pique our interest. Even better is you got others to share their five to give us even more to check out. Something for everyone no matter what experience level. So thanks for this.

    I have a special box for smaller games, which includes the following: Brew Crafters Card Game Coup Gloom Hanabi Kobayakawa Love Letter Oregon Trail Card Game Phase 10 Sushi Go and two decks of standard playing cards I've played Star Realms. It's a meh game for me, mostly because I'm not into deck building. I've also played Bang! The Dice Game. That one is fun and I may consider it for my collection.

    There's a great game I got in 1998 called Ninja Wars - in fact it was the first game I put deck protectors on because I knew I wouldn't be able to get hold of it again. _Yes_ it's got some random in it, and it isn't perfect but it's so much fun. The proof of that is that we're still playing, and loving, it now. There's some real hatred of it in one of the two comments on BGG, but I don't see much more random in it than, say Love Letter - if you really hate that random, then go play something else. There are 2 horrible cards in the deck - plague and typhoon - both of which if you are down to your last town or warrior can knock you out, but part of the fun is the tension of when the deck gets low and one of them is still in there. Suddenly people start only playing 1 card at a time (you redraw back up to the hand-limit at the start of your turn), or better still: using Theft to steal a card from an opponent - as this then puts you back up to the hand-limit, you don't draw next turn and the opponent you stole from now has to draw an extra card. Much amusement ensues. Well worth trying if in an anarchic, back-stabbing group (a good tactic against a player who had a good warrior draw is to gang up) group and you've got 20 mins to kill

    My Top 10 short games (gonna list more than 5, as I know Sam isn't fond of many party games, so those could be eliminated): 1. Telestrations: I heard such great things about this and found the 12 party pack on sale and got it a couple months ago. It has been a huge hit with my Family get togethers (with extended family) and is my 2nd favorite party game but only by 1 spot at #21 on my top 100. 2. Bang! the dice game: Perhaps my favorite filler game played at my board game meetup, which I introduced, and played fairly often. I think 2 other members have since bought a copy as well. It is also played at my Family get together sometimes. I blinged my copy with some metal arrows I got on Ebay. It is my 32nd favorite game and am so looking forward to the expansion Sam, I can't wait! 3. Say Anything: My 3rd favorite party game, probably barely fits under 30 minutes. Has been a hit with my family as well. I don't own the game, found it for around $5 to give to my sister for Christmas. My 33rd favorite game. 4. Boomtown: my 36th favorite game, but have only played 2-3 times. I found this looking for western games, and barely fits that, but still got it based on Bower's review. Although it sat unplayed for over a year. The plays probably took 45 minutes, learning the game, but am certain it will play shorter as we learn it, and is listed as 30 min at BGG. 5. The Resistance: I only played this a handful of times at a convention and look forward to more plays. My 41st favorite game. 6. Tsuro of the Seas/Tsuro: I haven't actually played the original Tsuro but look forward to it. I have played Tsuro of the Seas, but think that no dragons may be better, but then it may not fit this category, as the game might be longer. But for now Tsuro of the Seas has the Dragons and thus elimination is probably faster. It is my 45th favorite game. 7. Ca$h 'n Guns 2nd edition is my 54th favorite game. This has been hit or miss. I don't like the role cards, which is strange as I usually think more is better. And the games I have played without them have been more fun. But some of the new expansion seems promising even though it adds more. 8. Dungeon Roll is my 56th favorite game, even though I have only played 1 partial game. Looking forward to playing this more. 9. Beasty Bar is my 60th favorite game, based on 1 play at a convention, due to Zee's review. Really would like to see this at my meetup! 10. Guillotine is my 65th favorite game, also based on 1 play, but at my meetup, so more plays should be coming. ------------- Honorable mentions: Imhotep is listed as playable at 30 or more minutes, and with more plays may be at 30 or less, we'll have to see. Zombie Dice: a recent acquisition that is getting lots of plays, but not on my top 100. Fun little dice game though and quick. Got it for $5. No Thanks!: Bought this based on Dice Tower love and has been a great filler at my meetup and a good hit with my family. It is on my top 100, but lower than those I listed, but played more than most listed.

    I've never played Spyfall with timer or score keeping. Our groups have always been content by having as little distractions as possible and playing just to find out who sucks at the game the most.

    Bang The Dice Game is good but not brilliant. It was the only game my students did NOT enjoy this year: we tried a simplified version of the game (no renegades, no character cards, 6 health points to all players) and still they didn't get it. Not because they're stupid but because the game is not as simple or intuitive as it seems.

    I don't really get why everybody likes so much Bang The Dice Game. This game is just about luck, yes it is short but without any strategy. Original Bang was much better. Much better.

  • @Jeff321

    @Jeff321

    8 жыл бұрын

    I disagree, original Bang is horrible. You can get knocked out early and have to sit there doing nothing for the next 45 minutes while everyone else finishes. Also the Dynamite card is 100% luck and will usually eliminate you with one card draw.

  • @PaveraMichal

    @PaveraMichal

    8 жыл бұрын

    OK you are right that there is this problem with elimination, but in later expansion there is Ghost variant, so everybody becomes ghost and can still play. But I actually don't care about this elimination, if everybody knows the game, than one round is something like 30 minutes, so nobody cares. Dynamite is luck, but again it is fun luck and again I don't mind. But in original Bang was at least some strategy and at least some kind of bluffing/guessing element and the talk around the table is always fun, because nobody knows nothing. But in Bang The Dice Game, there is nothing like this. It basically doesn't matter who plays what role, it is just furious shooting on everybody around the table. Nobody cares who is who, and with the dice it is just basically luck, so nothing from original Bang what was really funny is in this Dice game. You can say that nobody cares about this because it is 20 minutes game, but if nobody cares about nothing in this game, than it is basically no game. Sorry i see it like this, Original Bang = Frustration but Fun and at least Tactic, DIce Game = Just Luck, Shooting Everybody without any Strategy/Tactic, and in the end Boring as hell.

    While I prefer a deep strategy game, not all my friends do. Bang is light enough for non-gamers to play and it fits more people then most games that only go up to 4. Plus, playing with non-gamers tends to be more laughing and fun as they learn to appreciate games. Most of the gamers that play heavy games are deep in thought (not that there is anything wrong with that) and games are more serious then let loose, laughing fun.

    Some interesting things here. I too love the card game more, but that doesn't fit the category (longer than 30 minutes), but it made the discussion anyways, which is cool. Just for stats sake here we go: Bang! the card game is my 4th favorite game and the dice game is my 32nd. I own all the expansions but do not like the ghost variant. It lengthens the game. Instead, I use Deadman from Fistful of Cards & Ghost Town through High Noon. Deadman does what the expansion for the dice game does, it brings back the 1st eliminated player, but with only 2 HP. Ghost Town brings all dead players back, but for only 1 turn. Enough to possibly shorten the game and end it! We have had games won because of these cards! However, when we play the dice game, it is not luck and random shooting. We eliminate who the enemy is. Perhaps some people are playing wrong. There is strategy, and its fun, just not as fun.

  • @Steve-L

    @Steve-L

    I almost forgot, there was a recent expansion, which has a blue card you can put in front of a player (I forget what those blue cards are called). This brings dead players back as well. But blue cards can be gotten rid of. Thus coming back can be short lived, and thus doesn't lengthen the game much either. This card has yet to come into play when I have played with it though.
