Hi Fi Rush going multi-platform is such a can of worms. Not only a first party published and developed game, but also the most genuinely loved Xbox game that no one really has anything bad to say about it. It really makes you wonder what's going on at Microsoft internally. Microsoft in general has always had a bad habit of destroying efficacy in their brands.

I've a fair idea what's going on at Microsoft. The Xbox division has been fairly autonomous and allowed to get on with things. After the Bethesda & Activision acquisitions the money people are taking a much closer look at their business model and ROI. The obvious question is why aren't we putting our titles on the two biggest console platforms. Which is even more pertinent now Gamepass subs have stagnated and much of the Cloud option has been handed over to Ubisoft. Where else do they turn to increase revenue?

​@@jaglemans6778 This is most likely the case. Microsoft Gaming might be a sign of the end of Xbox. I feel like whether the MS Gaming Logo is the typical MS Logo or the Xbox logo will be pretty telling. It could be that after the ABK acquisition they want to treat Xbox like they do surface and gaming like they do office and all their other services. Which doesn't like it'll be bad but the gaming landscape is just different. Xbox could actually try to increase the number of Xbox consoles in people's hands (a lot of it is just a continuous lack of marketing and native global support for a lot of regions). They could also try to improve the gaming and Xbox experience within Windows (make a gaming mode like steamOS that pushes the Xbox logo and Store). They could also improve the store experiences and QOL on Xbox and Windows to match Steam. They could actually talk all the investments they've made in first party assets and build up the perceived VALUE of the Xbox brand... but nope. Microsoft will just do what they always do and then wonder why their brand power is so weak. Granted it's not a completely awful strategy. I mean it's works for Sega and Take-Two and etc. Microsoft also got to be a 3 trillion company doing that. But I feel like there's such importance in their #1 competitors in every market always having the MOST Brand efficacy. Like Apple and Sony have both done tremendous jobs in making sure their brands are locked down tight. They don't even really offer much more value objectively (arguably they offer less), but they're unmatched in perceived value which is all that matters (especially for publicly traded companies). Microsoft literally came out and said they shouldn't have let the Windows Phone fail and yet are making all the same mistakes with Xbox.

XBOX doesn't care. Unless you're ready to sub to GP and buy a physical / digital copy of the game too... They will sell their games to playstation. Why did MS get into the console space? Do you think it was because they thought they could make better games than PS and Nintendo. Or... Did they see a place to make extra revenue where they wasn't making any before. Imagibe being loyal to a machine that saw you as nothing but fuel.

@@jimmythegamer2231 I'm not loyal to PlayStation. I grew up with a SEGA MEGA DRIVE and then got a N64 and didn't wanna move from cartridge to CD, eventually gave in and got a PS1... Now I have a PS5 but play Yugioh duel links on my SAMSUNG S22 ULTRA every day and use the PS5 for the big PS studios games that peak my interest... I'm loyal to me. I go and play where I want.

XB games will be everywhere and on everything and if you don't like it. Game someone else but you'll still probably end up buying an XB game or 2 and so XB will still win. After they got ABK they knew they could do what ever they wanted because there'll always be relevant in the gaming space. You guys cheered for the acquisition, don't stop clapping now that SONY fans have joined in the celebrations.

Long time listener and big fan of the show, so please take my feedback here sincerely. The food packet rustling and eating while podcasting is really off putting (and this is the second episode in a row where it's happening). It's distracting, sounds horrible, and comes off as really inconsiderate to the listener. Please don't do it (or at least mute the mic?). Thanks!

If this is true, it is over. No walking this back if it happens. They might as well give up on all new hardware and go third party. Hardware will be useless. So if they want to tank their gaming division in record time, this is the way. Mark my words.

I have a feeling less and less people will listen to this great podcast after recent news has come out. Xbox brand has loss a sense of excitement and now people will flip platforms and spend more elsewhere

These PC based handhelds are scary niche to the point of being irrelevant, it’s like the only people they appeal to are those in gaming media and KZreadrs so they keep talking about them while the average person does not give a rat’s ass.

If Xbox just greenlit new hardware... That's a massive red flag. Means they will be way behind if they wanna release with the PS6. You need to secure and produce silicon way in advance.

They ignores that when you release your 1P to other platforms ( meanwhile Netflix disneyplus sony Nintendo others they keep exclusive to please there customers) you will lose the consumer’s passion and love for what you offer in the market because he knows that the future of the platform is unknown and he does not like to invest in it in the long term. If they put Bayonetta 2 and 3 on pc, I'd buy them day one. Those 2 games are no longer making Nintendo a lot of money, but a release on other platforms would reignite interest in the titles and even boost sales in the switch copies. Nintendo believes what you believe. Those games have more value as a boost to the brand recognition. They could be right, but as some one who would rather have the option to play the game on my platforms, it's a bummer. Even if all of the xbox games become timed exclusives, it doesn't remove the value of game pass. Xbox players will still get the ability to play day one and the extra revenue can go into more games. I kind of struggle to see the down side to the consumer except in the context of internet arguments.

BTW, Doug Bowser was not sued because he hacked a device, it was because he was selling hacked devices and offering paid services in which he would hack devices for paying customers. In total he plead guilty for 11 felonies. It was FAR more than just he hacked one of his Switch consoles and now his life was turned upside down.

Rand really gonna play Cyberpunk on Series X with a 4090 in the same room. lol

If Xbox puts their first party games on PlayStation after years of no exclusives it will kill the brand in my opinion

It's a great book. Would also highly recommend The Three Body Problem if you're a fan of scifi. It's a trilogy, and the entire series is fantastic. Have no idea if the new Netflix show will pan out but the books are quite the ride.

MS doing a handheld would go hand in hand with the potential for an ARM based Xbox. I’ve felt for a while that gaming hardware is heading towards ARM because the cross compatibility with not only handhelds but mobile phones is incredible for creating a unified ecosystem. Apples graphics capabilities with their M chips aren’t very good but the CPU is extremely impressive and allows for incredible battery life and efficiency so if Qualcomm or someone else develops an ARM based chip with good graphics I think it’s absolutely an opportunity that console manufacturers should jump on. Obviously it would put back compat into question and could frustrate developers but stuff like Rosetta 2 and Wine have advanced rapidly so I could picture a compatibility layer working well to support back compat.

Turtle Beach headsets sound great, but they are fragile. I've not had a Turtle Beach last more than a year ever, whereas I have Astros that are close to 10 years old that still work great, and the Astros sound very good too.

We also have meat sauce instead of meatballss, think its more of a european thing maybe, only had with meatballs once.

Thats the same way I feel bro. I lowkey feel like an Idiot for pre-ordering physical copies of Persona 3P and Persona 4G for Xbox. I have stopped buying Xbox games for now, and I'm focusing on ps5 and switch games, for my collection. But Im leaning towards buying Dragons dogma 2 and future 3rd party games on ps5. Not sure if you heard, but recently stuff about Starfield also going to ps5 has come out, and apparently many more surprising games will go to PlayStation/Switch.

If Xbox sells out and goes 3rd party. It means gamepass is out. If they do that I dump the brand for life. Don't gaf about exclusives, but gamepass is make or break period.

Jez seems to be banking on HiFi Rush flopping on PlayStation. Can't see it myself, I'd expect it to sell many, many more copies on PS5. Not least because there is no Gamepass option, the PS5 userbase is far larger, and such a title appeals to the PlayStation demographic. I'd have bigger question-marks over the success of Sea of Thieves.

Agreed. People have a right to be upset that a console they’ve invested years into, repeatedly being told to wait, up and decides to start putting games on other consoles. Why have I been investing in your console all this time then? Better thumb stick placement? Cool, I guess. ​@@Dyelogan You are correct, the hardcore fan base is who spends the most on the platform. Casuals play 1 or 2 games a year, they are needed for mass adoption, but not for long retention or increases in revenue. Thats why the casual need to be converted into hardcore fans, but with Xbox doing this, well we will leave the irrelevant platform. I personally already own a XsX, PS5 and switch. So I'm lucky, but Xbox has been my main since 2010. With this news, I started shifting my purchases to ps5 and will cancel gamepass when I'm done playing Persona3R. I haven't decided for sure If Ill even get 3rd party games for xbox anymore. Xbox will go from being my main, to being used for Time exclusives(If true) till i get a pc.

I disagree. I think her tenure in competitive fields make her an excellent choice. Come on guys Xbox is still alive, now is the time to make a positive change.

You can't say the portal is a waste. I love remote play for my xbox. it certainly a bright future for remote play. I am not speaking for remote play.

Microsoft not investing in ESports is a massive missed opportunity, they now own Game Battles / MLG which was still a big community of competitive players and just let it go away. Guarantee they will scramble in a few years to try and catch-up when someone big invest in ESports.

Seems like Xbox is going to become 3rd party. What are your views on that Rand?

I just want Xbox to be clear about their future plans with games. If all games have an exclusivity timeframe on them, that's not an issue for me but I would play those games on a single console and that would be Playstation. If PlayStation did the same approach and did this with Xbox, I would pick Xbox, but I can never see Sony doing that. The main reason for my stance is cost, If I can own a single console and have all of my library in one place that's better for me and to be honest we all know Playstation has a better Achievement (trophy) system, much better DVR and more games on the platform.

Every says this, but you can own a pc right now that will play all the xbox titles, pc exclusive titles, and the Sony games. Do you own a pc? I'm not accusing you of making empty threats specifically, but there are enough of these similar comments in the ether that I perceive to be empty threats. Lots of people are having an existential crisis about "the exclusives" but the truth is that it is only really allowing more people access to the games. I want to play on pc. You seem to prefer xbox. Play it there. Why buy games on a console you like less just because you CAN play the games elsewhere?

@@shepergames3734 I don't personally enjoy gaming on PC, I like sitting on my couch with my LG TV and playing games that way. I enjoy the ease of a console and not having to mess about with settings etc. I do own a gaming laptop and I've owned gaming PCs in the past but that was primarily for MMO's such as WoW and LOTRO. So in terms of why buy it on Playstation, that's because I can own one console with arguably better features such as achievements and DVR as well as more games. That assid if I stick with Xbox and this kills hardware much more than their current struggles, I lose my digital library of games. As it stands my library isn't huge at the moment but the risk is now if I build it on Xbox I might lose it if this new approach ends it killing their hardware which I believe it will.

@@ThatVikingGamer xbox isn't going anywhere man. They are negotiating for silicon for their next xbox already. Your library is safe for now. Other people getting to play the same games you own should not affect your personal enjoyment. Games having a larger audience to sell to will give some of their titles a better chance of success which will only fuel development for more games. Sony's games going to pc has been a boon for them. Each game can sell more copies after that initial burst of exclusivity. Lastly, as a pc gamer, screwing around with settings isn't really necessary. Unless you're inclined to turn off motion blur or chromatic aberration(as I am one to do), you can just boot most games and play them. Your graphics drivers pick base settings that will work for each game. It isn't nearly the wild west like pc gaming used to be. Having said that, my main point was that you can have a full library on one machine. And that library is actually safe. I have a full library of ps3 digital games that will soon be inaccessible. Meanwhile I bought the orange box in 2008 and that is still in my steam library.

The general direction was set when Microsoft removed console sales as their Key Performance Indicator and stopped announcing console numbers; benefiting consoles became just a "nice thing", so it was a matter of time before they eventually start looking at other platforms.

See if there's a way that you can tell Rand about that 69 PAL.

If the rumors are true, I'm curious how fast Microsoft will become a 2 trillion dollar company once they reveal that Xbox can play the least games out of all consoles, since all their content will be released on their competition's platforms. I want to use a system which can play the most games, and no amount of backlog or preexisting investment will change that.

Jez is great, but his announcer voice, especially for manscape, is the most annoying thing in the world.

At this point I think we're just waiting for the first Xbox 3rd party releases to be announced for PlayStation. Like PlayStation titles going to PC, once you release one, it makes sense to release the rest. I'm sure titles like Starfield, Forza Horizon, Flight Sim, Indiana Jones etc. are already scheduled for PlayStation somewhere down the line. I'm past the point of caring what platforms titles are released on. I just want one box under my TV that gives me access to all titles. The only hardware I've ruled out is going back to PC as I can't be bothered with the hassle. It becomes a hobby in itself operating a PC to it's full potential and I don't have the time for that!

A steam deck literally solves this problem and actually has access to virtually all games (even without emulators). You can just turn it on and play if you're not a PC power user. I've never had a gaming PC before (well that I've successfully used for gaming) and it's fantastic. There's also a high ceiling of customization if you want it. Really, I wish Microsoft would take a hint with SteamOS and do something with an Xbox game mode on Windows. All the clutter and having to move between different libraries is what makes windows gaming feel like a chore.

Honestly I'm losing faith in Xbox. I thought they were making great strides towards improving their brandperception. It was a uphill battle for sure, but they showed great promise. Relative to the other console manufacturers Xbox was a very positive and sympathetic company, with very real, honest and friendly people which were true gaming enthusiasts, and it delivered the most bang for buck without the pretentiousness. But I feel like whenever succes rears it's head for Xbox, people inside the company that are not gaming enthusiasts, start to mess with it and want to be involved because they see an opportunity for making profit, and they ruin Xbox's progress and once again damage the brand. And I doubt MS will ever let Xbox succeed. I'm afraid when succes grows, non gamers will take the lead to steer the ship, because only certain people become CEO's or have sway in huge companies, and although times are changing, I doubt many of these people will be true gaming enthusiasts.

That‘s exactly how I feel too. And interviews with the OG Xbox team already pointed out that MS issue. Sometimes I wonder if they only way for Xbox to succeed is if they somehow manage to buy themselves out from MS.

MS has been using Xbox to transition all the fanbase to services/cloud. That’s been the goal all along and was very obvious. I’ve always called Phil a pied piper telling Xbox fanboys what they want to hear till it’s too late…the road they are on has been obvious for years. I’ve also said that Xbox fanboys are like frogs sitting is a slowly heating pot of water. How people thought that MS was going to spend billions of dollars on studios and publishers to lock all that content on Xbox console, Gamepass and PC…while keeping the games day and date on Gamepass & in perpetuity (on a console that is failing) is beyond me. They are not running a charity… As a former Xbox fanboy from 2002 till the Xbox One X time period, it was obvious to me where things will go…so I stopped having them as my primary consoles.

Just remember Xbox is #1

Speaking as a gamer that owns a sx/ps5/switch and someone that doesnt follow any particular platform I couldn't give a shit if xbox releases games on other consoles

I know people will hate this comment but Rand is right. Move on. For over a month people have been crying about the possible impacts of something they don't even know all the details about. Sounds just like the PlayStation guys crying about PC ports when it ultimately made no difference. Start complaining when you see real impact.

Slippery slope. This is a platform where it’s built around people expressing their opinions, people should be allowed to do that and. And you cannot compare this in any way to PlayStation porting their games to pc. So many factors are different.

Call me crazy but I won’t play Hi Fi Rush and I won’t buy it. Why. It’s kind of psychology for me. I don’t want to play a game that’s on PlayStation. These people attack Xbox do everything they can do to try and hurt Xbox. So if they give that game to PlayStation I consider that game dead to me. I have no interest in playing it or buying it. Maybe others feel the same way. I bought Xbox to play Xbox games. If I want to play PlayStation games I’d buy a PlayStation. I don’t want to play Xbox games that are on PlayStation. It’s something about it that rubs me the wrong way. Call me crazy. If they give it to them I’ll never play it. Fine mutiplats are different. They come from a third party who doesn’t choose sides. They just want to make a game everyone enjoys. If zmicrosoft wants to give away their games go ahead and make those fanboy happy and go third party then. I just don’t see what the point of this is. Cr ate a studio and have them make third party games then under the Microsoft brand. But for me when Microsoft starts offering their games to other platforms it turns me off to that game.

The point is MONEY and there's more MONEY to be made on PlayStation and Nintendo because they have more players. It's actually smart business sense. You have to take all feelings out of it. XB can't survive well it can but it can't trive with XB players alone there just isn't enough of you. Also of everyone did what you did and stopped playing a game because it went to PlayStation. Well... That's the quickest way to get HALO and FH5 on PS

Putting zhi Fi Rush and sea of thieves makes no sense to me because. Let’s say PlayStation comes out with a game that everyone loves. And they put it on Xbox. What if it’s so popular that it’s making more money because of Xbox users are buying. That Xbox services games start to lose money. What is Xbox going to do? Pull the PlayStation game from Xbox. Then Xbox looks like sore losers. Because a PlayStation game is outselling a Xbox game. I think Xbox is Fing with fire. And they will get burned. They lost a gen once. They can’t afford to F around and risk another Gen. the zcEzo said he would be happy if there was no exclusive games. That games could go on all platforms. What about when Xbox had no games and the quality was low. Xbox wouldn’t survive back then. My point is Xbox is acting like they don’t miss or haven’t missed in the past. I feel like Xbox is getting cocky with their acquisitions of publishers and studios. They released redfall and people flipped out. It’s not like Xbox has been firing on all cylinders for years. And we haven’t even seen a AAA game every quarter yet and they are talking about offering games to other platforms. All I can say Xbox F’s up again. I’ll stay strictly a PC gamer.

Xbox is not in a position to negotiate…MS needs Switch and PS to sell more of their games. Xbox console js definitely not enough since the console is failing, and Gamepass cannibalizes sales. PC is good for some sales here and there but is not enough so they need more. PS and Nintendo don’t need Xbox to sell their games.
