Woodturning: An Ashload of Cherry Blossoms - part 1
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
From an ash log, I turned a shallow bowl and decorated it with painted cherry blossoms. Part one of this two part series covers the rough turning. Part two picks up after the rough turned bowl has been dried.

I watched these back ash wards, since I watched part 2 first. Kinda like having dessert before your meal. Watching you cut on the bandsaw gives me hope I’ll gather my courage and cut my walnut blocks. Thanks for all the effort it takes to put these videos together. Camera shots are captivating and show so much of the turning it feels like you’re there.

Hi, Cathy. I'd like to point out that I published my video in spite of the rioting called for by President Megalomaniac. (I'm embarrassed to be living so close to DC.) Thanks for your nice comments!
Thank you for not putting background music into this video. Beginner wood turner here, never had any in person instructions. I’m glad to be able to hear the tool when it’s cutting the wood. Thank you

Thanks for watching and for your comments, Chris. I hate music during woodturning videos - I much prefer to hear the machine and the tools.
LOL! Best intro ever. Always enjoy your humor in your vids. Thx for sharing

Looks good so far. I'm glad I'm not the only one who gets blanks stuck on a wood worm screw! Getting ready for Part 2.

After this one got stuck on the woodworm screw, I used a 24" clamp to hold the chuck on the lathe so I could two-hand off the screw - that will be my go-to method in the future. Thanks for watching, Tom.
Hi Rick... looking good so far... going to get straight into part 2 ... take care...All the best.....Andy

Hi Rick, Great first part. Off to watch part 2 now. I waited for both to be posted before watching. That tight Ashed worm screw took the pith for a while. Take care Rick. Cheers, Huw

Actually, I did use the termite tool on the exterior, but I cut that clip out as the video was getting too long.
If I said that, people would call me a smart ash 😂

I like the shape you are going for, i think its going to look nice. One question though, When are we going to see you do a project thats just spindle Turning? 😁
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
I very rarely do spindle turning. I did fairly recently do a couple of vases, which are essentially spindle turning, and I plan to do more vases in the future. Thanks for watching and for your comments, Japie.

Yes, around 900 to a 1000 for that diameter bowl. It was fairly large, and 1000 is about as high as I would go. Thanks for watching, Knubbersl

Just the camera angle, I think. The bevel is 50 degrees, and it was freshly sharpened. Thanks for watching and commenting, Gabriel.
Use a mortise instead of a tennon, you won't waist as much wood !!!
@RickTurnsWoodturning
3 жыл бұрын
Six of one, half dozen of the other. I alternate between using tenons and recesses for chuck mounting, usually on a multi-year basis. I've never decided which is best, although I'm leaning toward tenons forever. Using a recess only saves wood if you want to keep the recess for some reason, which I don't.
still playing with your ash I see.
