Floor was actally doing the reading live. Any time they talk to him during this song, is to make sure he's okay. Almost every performance he would have the vocals turned off in his ear pieces so he didn't relive the full emotion of it over and over. This song always brings me to tears when it shows Tuomas singing the end of Mother and Father. Gets me everytime

awesome reaction. This piece has a very special place in my life. I know the back story but this piece is also an anthem for those people with mental health issues such as depression with suicidal thoughts, Yep I am one of those! Also in the Pit and the Pendulum Poe talks about the point at which you both give up hope and accept the end, which you really get the sense of in this. If I may I would like to give you my interpretation of the lyrics and what they mean to me. The first part, which you note starts with the words the end!! Is taken from Stephen Kings Tower series, the white lands were the home of a type of vampire that fed on emotions, (empathy), so a person left feeling nothing, empty and without emotion. In the second part, those lines expressing a feeling of futility, all same old same old yet, hating how you feel, then the verse seems to express the effort of trying to pretend to be ok, hence those two faces, one for everyone else and the real one that is private, no one to turn to for help as the people around you seem as upset as you so no shoulder to cry on so you just carry on pretending becoming that whore for the cold world. Then there is the remembering back to when all was good, yet you cannot get there despite everyone telling you “you are ok, it will be fine” till those words just sink you even further into the mess. Then we have the Pacific, oh wow, the wishing and planning stage, the beautiful sea, just wishing it was over, that you could be under the waves, beneath the pain tucked into that beauty., last goodnight kiss and a valentine that ends everything. Then that part that starts with being afraid, being raped, not in the traditional sense but feeling violated, alone and bloody scared, For Tuomas, feeling that those who he felt should have been there for him somehow betrayed him, a not uncommon feeling with severe depression, feeling that even life betrayed you, also again the mention of the tide and drowning, many see it as the perfect death! On a side note here, three minutes and counting, yep exactly three minutes to the point that Tuomas simulates the blade. Here also note how the music becomes chaotic, mirroring the thought process of someone planning their own death, no logic, well there is but only to the individual. Yet also a sense of excitement and of a journey, proceeding the calm. Then the passion play, traditionally passion plays were performed at Easter and were about the death of Christ, and Tuomas plays with us a little here, “second robber to the right of Christ! Well at the crucifixion there was only one robber either side of Christ but in the painting The Last Supper the person second to the right of Christ is Judas!!!!! Then of course the symbolic death and the slowing faltering heartbeat. The beginning or last part of the piece are the words that brought Tuomas back from the edge. In his case words from his parents but many of us will have people who were there at just the right time and who cared enough to be the rock and love us enough to hold on. If there is a message in this work surely it is to be kind, to look out for each other and if you can be there, you never know you may just save a person’s life. As someone did mine.

Spot on Sarah! This song could only be written by Nightwish and the genius that is Tuomas. The young choir boy sang the opening part. The amazing part of the 3 minutes and counting, is because of the compositional arrangement and depth of thought that goes into each song. Also keep in mind that the dynamic changes from part to part are mirroring the mental journey of the victim in Edgar Allen Poe's famous horror story, "The Pit and the Pendulum". A man contemplating his impending dome as he finds himself strapped to the table awaiting the descent of the pendulum overhead. Great job! Great to spend some time with you two once again. Peace.

Great job Tom and Sarah! And to the haters out there they can suck it! Music is a personal thing and all music and lyrics hit each person differently. If you can't respect that fact then maybe you shouldn't be watching reaction videos. I don't get butthurt when a reactioner doesn't fall in love with a song I may love. If they respectfully explain why it doesn't appeal to them I'll still give them an upvote. If they are disrespectful with their hate I just move on and don't even give them a downvote. (I don't downvote any reactions). Too many keyboard warriors out there spewing hate for no reason. If we all only loved a narrow range of music and got hate any time we went outside that spectrum imagine how much less great music we would have to listen to? I thought Sarah did a fine job, show her the same respect you show Tom. Oh wait, show her MORE respect than you show Tom! I forgot I was talking about Tom.😁Rock on peeps! 🤘 🤘

Another part of this song that I found to be GENIUS was the fact that it literally goes in reverse, so it starts off announcing his death and then goes backwards til the ‘mother and father’ and the words ‘the beginning’.. blows my mind every single time I hear it, is the beginning at the end cuz he meant HIS beginning was when he finally gets peace, so thats HIS BEGINNING?? Ahh just MIND BLOWN every single damn time!!

Tom 'You had watery eyes and had to fight it 'Your wife may have been surprised when she asked you 'Are you crying now' 'But you're really not the only 'Me too grown man' every time I play this song hear and see tears in the eyes 'the way this comes through is the improbably beautiful lyrics and the emotionally beautiful voice of Floor. The band Nigthwisch and Floor Are really a level higher than any band' are one of the few bands that can really stir something or a lot in me 'and I see it on many channels of you tube that I am not the only one who responds 'probably 99% feels this way' and to your dear wife 'Emppuu is not chatting 'h9j asks Thomass how he is doing (look carefully in Thomass' face and his answer to that. then turns Emppuu turns to the audience and look in his face that he says (tank you) for the respect of the audience because he knows how much this song means to Thomass and that sometimes he asks his director to turn off the vocals in his ears. otherwise evokes too many emotional feelings and he cannot continue playing (luckily never happened) But the best thing is that the audience knows exactly what it is about 'that's why it seems to some that Emppuu and Thomass are just having a chat which is clearly not and the case is' and Tom just lets your emotional side go 'for us viewers it is a recognition and confirmation of ourselves' that is also the reason that we like to follow these you tube'rs. To recognize and see 'listening if I or someone else feels the same 'why become more emotional with Nigthwisch and not with other band. Keep up the great fun comments and your wife should join Nigthwisch more often. wish you good luck and health gr Jan de Zwaan Netherlands army🇫🇮💯👍👍🤘🤘💖

I'm glad you now undersood. Firing Tarja off from the Nightwish was huge in Finnish and European press. Many concluded wrong opinions, this is not a love story or its lost. It is depressions of Tuomas, how he survived and finally with his mother and father. The song begins "The End" and ends "The beginning". This song is how he survived. Nothing to do with any love as your first reacion you implemented. This song is from the album "Dark Passion Play" and is beyond epic.

This song, even 10yrs later..is so painful for Tuomas, he turns off the vocal feed to his in-ear monitors. And you saw that first Emppu, then.later both he and Marko go stand next to Tuomas...making sure he's OK. The soprano at the beginning and the spoken word parts are performed by a young boy named Guy Elliott.

Great reaction. 👍 Keep in mind too, that the orchestral tracks are prerecorded for the album by the London Philharmonic Orchestra along with the choirs and of course here, the boy from the choir's spoken words. So it's safe to say that because it's prerecorded, they have to follow a metronome mixed into their in-ear monitors. They can't really "free play" or they end up slowing or speeding up the song at some point like all these American bands. lol I saw a video of Iron Maiden live doing Hallowed Be Thy Name and the song started at half the speed of the album and when the drums kicked in, it was almost twice as fast as the album. So in that sense, you can really appreciate Nightwish and other European bands using not only a click track, but prerecorded tracks when they play. Awesome!!! 😊❤🤘🤘

They have something called a click track that is at least in the drummers earpieces. Everything is timed to that click track. That's why they can be so precise. At the Tampere concert their song "The Greatest Show on Earth" has fireworks timed to the music. The people shooting the fireworks off have to be listening to that click track and have a marker in that track when they set the fireworks off. Everything is written by Tuomas the keyboardist including the click track. They have an orchestra and a choir tracks perfectly timed to that click track.

there is an art to be learned to playing with click tracks though as well. If one person gets out the whole thing falls apart as the backing tracks don't stop and flow with the mistake they continue on. I have seen a lot of people panic when playing with click tracks. It is also part of the reason Emppu doesn't do extended ripping solos as he simply can't as it would mess up the whole song.

But, opinions like hers are important because they keep us all grounded. She acknowledges the beauty of the songwriting and musicianship, while noting that one should expect that level of performance from professionals.

Hello Tom. The song "The Poet and the Pendulum" is a 13 Minute journey through the mind and turmoil of Tuomas Holopainen after the year 2005. It was in that year the band parted with their long-time singer Tarja Turunen and had a personal falling out with her. The pain of the separation was big on both sides, and shown in this song. There is guilt for what happened, there is the responsibility that the band and Holopainen had to show towards the fans,. It was the End of an Era for them, and reason for Holopainen being lost as described in these lyrics. We can only of course to a certain degree suppose how much of these are truly Holopainen's feelings, wishes and pains - but we do know that the lyrics of Nightwish have been up to then very personal. Other songs on the album also digest this separation and falling out of the members with Turunen. However personal and "real" these thoughts are, I feel like this song definitely takes us not only on a journey with Holopainen but also into ourselves. The music underlines the emotional gravity of the song extremely well. And I believe a lot of people can actually relate to a sense of guilt and being overwhelmed that all they desired for is the safety of home and innocence. While being personal, the song can still ring true to it's listener. That's a quality Nighwish possesses in many, many more songs. The emotional journey is one we can all share and very few bands know how to put that journey into song and especially into sound as well as Nightwish does. The band remains through all it's shores and Oceans, one of my main favourites and I hold special place for the band in my musical heart. I hope you have enjoyed reading my analysis and share some of my thoughts. If you do have any comments, please feel free to let me know. And remember the beauty of interpretation is that it is subjective; we can see all and feel different things in the same song and continue to love it endlessly. Lyric analysis by Annika Hausen Greetings from the Netherlands

In regards to the timing of this band, I agree with you in some ways Tom. Yes they do use a click track to keep the pace steady BUT they still have to play the notes to that click track and they do it flawlessly. For example just for fun I have added like 30 of their songs to a game you might have heard of called "Rock Band". I have added the guitar, bass and drums of these songs in, even the really fast ones like Devil in the Deep Dark Ocean. I use the midi files from their studio albums to add these notes and they match perfect to the live versions of the songs. They never miss a note or anything! They have the 3 min mark timed with the click track so it would be hard to miss that but they are still an incredibly tight band.

Floor is the only singer that can reach that part of me I thought was dead, my innocence. That's why she's the Goddess, your right it is more than just a professional band. I know this because Tarja never got to me though I loved her voice, the band (musically) was the same. Recently I discovered Beyond The Black and she is also able to find a way into my person. Though without Floor first tunneling into my being I don't think anyone else could. Don't make your wife jealous, she's your Queen.

No other band can do this live. I’ve seen dozens of different bands live and they’re the only ones this good. Anyone who says otherwise, either doesn’t go to live music and appreciate the performance, or they just aren’t smart enough to understand talent. Not naming names 👀

At last someone who, like me, doesn't buy the Tuomas/Tarja "romantic love" thing. No evidence whatsoever. I think you're interpretation of that is correct. My No 1 NW song. And I relate to Ralfs comment below - Nightwish may not be a cure for depression but they sure as hell help. The start and the spoken sections are Guy Elliott.

Whilst I know you mistated some of the backstory between Tuomas and Tarja, there are a lot of people who would have agreed with your assessment as well, and in the end who knows what someone really feels about someone else deep down inside where the sun don't shine 😁 the obsession with the truth is irrelevant in music. All that matters in the end is what the song makes you feel. Tuomas has said this or something similar so many times in interviews about all his music! I have noticed after watching reactions for a few years now, I think I first noticed them popping up in 2017 on youtube, if it is a happy song that makes you feel good no one gives a toss about "what it is supposed to mean". As soon as it is a sad or depressing or deep song everyone wants to know what, why, where, how and who (bloody bunch of busybodies!) as if it makes a difference to the song. The only thing that matters is what the song means TO YOU, Tuomas doesn't need to be psychoanalysed by the world. Haha 🤣😂

Not only did Tuomas compose this song, he also directed it using pre-recorded tracks, like a film director does. That alone allows each facet to take place in such a precisely timed manner. I think that's what your wife means by: “they're professionals”. And no, not many other bands could do this. Maybe Arjen Lucassen (Ayreon), or Epica?

React to Master Passion Greed, TPATP is the sad, depressed, s***idal side of Tuomas after all that mess with Tarja, MPG is his pissed off side, the song is brutally amazing! With Marko on the vocals! Unfortunately there's no live version of it, just the studio one but still! It's tightly connected with this one

Hi Tom and Sarah...In regards to the complaint about looking at a mobile phone during a reaction, that is why I don't watch live stream reactions. Reactors start getting more interested reading the live stream comments than paying attention to the song they are reacting to. At least you all didn't comment to the live stream comments during the video. Have been a fan of this channel since you started listening to Nightwish, and I will continue to be one.....however, I don't and won't watch a live stream reaction from any reactor. Big Brain Singer does a live stream video reaction and pauses the video so he can talk to commenters during it. Don't watch those either. Love to the family! The boys must be growing like weeds now!!

i am watching the body laungage of the member like Floor and Tuomas and also you can tell the narrater of the song is in pain both mental and emotinal Floor is tearing at her hair which is a known grief response in older times and as the voice over starts Tuomas turns away from the stage ie the audiance then is at peace towards the end ps smiling in the animal kingdom and in some cases humans is a sign of fear and aggression

Tom I think you are wrong about Tuomas feelings for Tarja. I saw a documentary about the early days of nightwish. Tuomas admited he had a crush on Tarja. He felt it was obvious from the songs Everdream and Gethsemane. Especially Gethsemane. That song is a masterpiece about unrequited love.

  • @KristiinaBerg

    @KristiinaBerg

    2 жыл бұрын

IMO Tom meant that this particular song is not about the unrequited love (if there ever was any). A crush is stg completely different. Tuomas said, everybody in Kitee was smitten by Tarja when they were young.
